The Georgia
Mountains
The elevation is higher, and itsshaded by trees. These things
make the temperature cooler.
The terrain also makes it harderto get around. Some people live in
the mountains, but its not highly
populated. Can you think of some

due to DDT- it madetheir eggs too soft
to hatch. Now they

Humans use of DDT changed this
habit just enough to almost killoff an entire species of bird.
Can you think of other wayshumans could possibly change
this habitat, thus affecting the
plants and animals that thrive

The Piedmont is also
home to White-tailedDeer. They prefer wooded

to populate the area, weforce them into unsafe

As we increase the human population in
this region, we continue to push animals
out of their natural habitats. Here are some
coyotes in downtown Atlanta- if caught,
they are most likely re-released outside of
the state. They are not a threat to humans, but they do prey upon family pets now thatwe share a habitat with them.

Can you think of other ways
humans could possibly changethis habitat, thus affecting the
plants and animals that thrive
here? How can we protect theenvironment?

The Coastal Plain
Region
It makes up southern Georgia, so
its the warmest region of the
state.
The land is flat, and the soil ismostly sandy. This creates a
unique environment for many
different plants and animals.
-

38/68
In the Coastal Plain,
you might see..a lack of hills and
an abundance of
water. Actually,
most of the water
is on the eastside of the state.
The western side
is pretty, but flat.

obviously a

Most trees
would drown in
this habitat, butnot the Cypress-
it loves all that
muck!

That muck is
also a great
habitat forAmerican

Can you brainstorm some things
that humans might do to try toconserve this habitat for all of the
plants and animals that live here?

Where the warm, salty waters of
the Atlantic Ocean meet our state,a very unique habitat is created.
Welcome to the beaches and
barrier islands of Georgia!

Loggerhead Sea
Turtles and Manateescan also be found in
waters off of

Both are also

Manatees like to
swim close to the
surface, and so
many get killed orinjured by boats. Sea

I hope you enjoyed our field trip
through Georgias Habitats!
Keep going for some cool ideas
to take your learning to the next
level!

Think about the features that some
animals have that make them feelperfectly at home in one of Georgias
habitats.
Can you design or create a brand newanimal that has similar features so that
they could survive happily in one of
Georgias habitats?

Which of Georgias regions is your
favorite? Which of these regions hasplants, animals, and climate you would
enjoy learning more about?

Create a 3-D Diorama ( no bigger thana mans shoebox) of one of Georgias
habitats. What animals and plants
must you include to make it seemmore life-like?
-

Use your Georgia power point, habitats booklet, and sites linked
on Bandys website to gather the
information you need to make your
diorama. Your focus for this
project is to make a habitat with a
star animal within a Georgia
region. Plants and other animalsshould also be those found in that
region.

Page 2-Make a list of animals that dont livein any of Georgias habitats.
Write a paragraph: Why do they not live here?
Why are they not suited to any of the habitats
here?

Page 3 Make a list of plants and animals
that do belong in the Georgia region you
have chosen to research.
Write a paragraph telling why do they live
there? Why are they suited to live in the
Georgia region you have created? Couldthey live in any other place?

Page 4 Using facts you have learned
about Georgia regions, write a narrative
story from the viewpoint of the focusanimal in your diorama.
Your story should include facts about
the region and life in that region in acreative manner! You may brainstorm
and gather ideas for this page at home
but the story must be written at school.
