Biographical Sketch
The Smith family of Greenville, Virginia traces its ancestry to Devonshire,England. William Smith settled ih Virginia in the late 18th century. Smith'snumerous offspring populated rural Augusta County making their living as farmers.Marriage into several other large families gave the Smith's ties to Louisa andRockbridge Counties. During the 19th century, Prices, Randolph's Brookses, andWilsons all joined the Smith family through marriage.
In the 1890's W. F. Smith operated a rolling mill. He also was active in civicaffairs serving as a notary public to the Greenville community. Smith's son,W. Ballard Smith became a teacher at the McDonough School in Maryland wherehe spent thirty years educating young men. While at McDonough,Smith met andmarried Mary Emmette Brooks; they then had four children. One of their daughters,Mary Lyle Smith (1892-1981), collected the family papers.
Earl LaVerne Crum (1891-1961) can be best described as a 20th century Renaissanceman; he was a scholar, poet, linguist and artist.
