    ABST RAC T: After twen ty years o f work on the geo grap hy of representations, how is it possible to define geo graph y as the science o f space , ie as direct knowledge of materreality? This con ceptio n of the discipline - based o n Cartesian precepts o f eviden ce (eg

    obse rver's indep end ent certainty), reduc tionism (ie a disaggregation into sets of simelements), causality (ie the presupp osition o f a linear linkage betw een cause and effect) exhaustiveness (ie the certainty tha t noth ing essential has been om itted) - has been throinto quest ion by the geography of representat ions ' hol ist ic approach. H ow can o ur scientpractices be separated fi 'om ou r interior existence with its affective and em otion al aspectsnot scienti f ic act ion an extension o f being? M ustn ' t the geographer, a bove and b eyon d observat ion of concrete phenom ena, a lso understan d the subt le and co mplex - a t t imrando m and hidd en - l inks which uni te hum an beings and their l ife-space, be i t f rom viewpoint of the poet , or of a ll those who take al ternat ive approaches to ge ography? Whwould like to demonstrate is (1) how in an historically and socially given environment, individual constructs his own reality in linking together the structural, functional asym bolic; (2) ho w the repres entation of the landscape is related to our existential experienand (3) how the imaginary and the real are con nect ed in each place.
