Geography - International trade : Food
LO. Can I list and name the countries that are the major producers of key products such as coffee and sugar?
I have listed and named some of the most traded foods globally.I have named and described the world’s most traded beverage.*I have defined what the terms “trade”, “export” and “import” mean.
Revisit - Can you remember when we learnt about The Vikings and how they traded (bought and sold) items on their travels?
Revisit
International Trade
• Everything we want and need cannot be sourced within the national borders of the United Kingdom.
• We therefore import items such as food products from other countries.
• Think about some of your family’s favourite food and drinks. • Could they be produced here in the U.K? If not, why?
Trade: The buying and selling of products we want and need.
Import:Bringing goods into a country for sale.
Export:Sending goods to another country for sale.
Import

Most of the food in our kitchens is global. Here are some examples of where common food items originate from.
Think back to the work we did in our previous lesson on “Trade”, when we sorted all the different food in our cupboards and fridges and listed where they originated from.
Now, look at this shopping list…where do you think these items originated from?
Task 1 – Shopping list

Lemons
Coffee
Brazil nuts
Pineapple

Task 2 - Now see if you can match up the items to where they came from on a world map. Top tip – label the continents and oceans first as this will help you find the locations. An example of what to do is on the next slide.
Here is an example of what your completed map might look like.
Did you know that coffee is the world’s most traded beverage (drink)? This map shows where the main coffee producing countries are located.
Challenge Task –Can you recognise and name some of the countries that are located within “The Coffee Belt”?
Use a map or atlas to help you.
Can you recognise and identify some of the flags of the counties located within “The Coffee Belt”? Use the next slide to help you.
This chart shows which countries produce the most coffee. Did you recognise any of the flags on the map?
Which country is the World’s biggest producer of Coffee?
This maps show the flags and the locations of the regions which produce the most sugar. Can you recognise and identify some of the countries by their location or their flags?
This chart shows which countries produce the most sugar. Did you recognise any of the flags on the map?
Which country is the World’s biggest producer of Sugar?
Task 3 –• In your books write a simple definition to explain what these words mean –
Trade import export
• Write a brief description to explain why countries trade with one another and why countries export and import goods.
• Make a list of some of the most popular items that are exported and imported in the world.
• List and name which countries produce the most coffee and sugar.
• Ext task –Can you think of any reasons why these countries produce the most sugar and coffee? Think like a Geographer!
