AksumAksum (also spelledAxum)was anAfrican
kingdom that emergedaround the 1st centuryandflourishedforthenextsixorsevencenturies.Its core area lay in the highlands of what istodaysouthernEritrea.Atthekingdom'sheight,itsrulersheldswayovertheRedSeaandinlandas far as theNileValley inmodern Sudan.Attimes,AksumcontrolledthecoastofArabiaandmuchoftheinteriorofmodernYemen.The title of Aksumite kings was "negusa
nagast" (king of kings). King Zoskales, whoruled at the end of the second century A.D.,is mentioned by name in an ancient Greekshipping guide. The guide says he promotedcommerce with Rome, Arabia, and India.Among the African commodities that Aksumexported were gold, rhinoceros horn, ivory,incense,andobsidian.The people ofAksum created a civilization
of considerable distinction. They devised anoriginal architectural style and employed it instonepalacesandotherpublicbuildings.Theyalso erected a series of carved stone stelae at
Aksumasmonumentstotheirdeceasedrulers.Some of these stelae are among the largestknownfromtheancientworld.
