IntroductionThe key component of a comprehensive geomechanical model is knowledge of the current state of stress. Wellbore failure occurs because the stress concentrated around the circumference of a well exceeds the strength of a rock (M. Zoback 2007).

Geomechanics Desk Engineer Project- Drilling Department 2011- 2012

Schlumberger provided a dedicated geomechanical specialist for 12 months His main tasks were:

-to deliver data for 6- 8 wells during 1 year,-to train the nominated well design engineers in well bore stability studies,-to provide templates or spreadsheets required for geomechanics studies-to deliver a final report covering work performed, results and recommendations

Geomechanics Desk Engineer Project- Outcomes

• 11 people including 6 geologists and 5 drilling engineers have been trained 1 year in Geomechanics

• One of the training scope was to make students familiar with type of data required for geomechanical analysis

• Students had a written assignment on material covered during the course covering

• Almost half of people passed successfully the technical tests.

Development Challenge- Bogdan Popina

Project Name: Pore Pressure Prediction- Guideline.Project Owner- Serge LensProject coordinators Andreas Strunz and Madalina Coada, Mentor: Silviu Man

• Categorize potential drilling surprises, i.e. shallow gas, over-pressured formations, hole instability and losses in depleted or fractured formations

• Make recommendations for well design and contingencies that will reduce the risk of Drilling Surprises

• Make recommendation for training to prepare Drilling Engineers and Drilling Supervisors to manage challenging drilling conditions

• Identify tools and procedures that can identify potential drilling issues before it is too late
