Gentleness is acting and speaking in a kind, considerate way. It is using self control, in order not to hurt or offend anyone. We can be gentle with people and animals in the way we touch them or in the way we speak to them. We handle things carefully so they will not break or be hurt. This week, Parkhurst State School had the pleasure of hosting Central Queensland Principals for two days as part of the 2020 Principals’ Conference. This year, the event was not able to see every Principal in the Region unite in the one space. This year, the Conference was in a virtual format in hubs across the Region, allowing Principals to still collaborate face to face, whilst engaging in professional learning via Zoom. Parkhurst State School was one of three hubs in Rockhampton. Four streams were explored across the two days, including instructional leadership, case management, successful transitions and collaborative inquiry. It was a great opportunity to host colleagues from a range of schools and the feedback received regarding our school was very complementary. At Parkhurst State School, learning officially concludes each day at 3:00 p.m. The school funds the supervision of our Kiss and Go Zone until 3:30 p.m. each day at a cost of almost $28 000 each year. Unfortunately, after this 3:30 p.m., no staff members are officially ‘on duty’. Over recent weeks, there have been several instances of learners not being collected by their parents or carers until 4:00 p.m. and well after. It is not an ideal situation having one staff member onsite being responsible for learners awaiting collection. Ocassionally, Staff have appointments and meetings to attend in the afternoon. We understand and appreciate that the current traffic conditions may impact on afternoon collections. If you are in this situation, please contact the school. Tomorrow is the Rockhampton Show Day Holiday, postponed from last Term. It is a great opportunity to spend time as families, catch up on ‘those’ odd jobs and take time out for yourselves. 2020 is our year to Lead, Teach,

Learn and Live like a PIRATE.

‘PIRATE’ is an acronym to

remind us all to learn with

passion, be inquisitive,

demonstrate our 5Rs, be active,

think creatively, critically and

reflectively and be enthusiastic.

In 2020, learning like a pirate

will underpin our learning and

remind us to look for the

treasure in every moment. For

the remainder of this Term, we

will continue to recognise our

weekly Pirates of the Week

through our Assembly Online.

Congratulations go out to this week’s ‘Parkhurst

Pirates’ who have …

‐ demonstrated passion for their learning

‐ have been inquisitive

‐ displayed the 5Rs (respect, responsibility, rigour,

resilience and relationships)

‐ being active learners

‐ thinkers

‐ showing enthusiasm

Our Oval Walk began last week from 8:45 a.m. to

8:55 a.m., ensuring that every learner participates in

moderate physical activity that raises the heart rate.

There is a requirement that at least 30 minutes of

physical activity is provided for every learner every

day through Physical Education Lessons, Sport and

Smart Moves. This cannot be done without the

wonderful support of our volunteer teachers who

are leading the way. Great job and thank you !

Over the last few weeks, many calls have been

received from community members regarding

Parkhurst State School learners congregating in

groups on Mason Avenue and on Norman Road for

up to 45 minutes after their release on the 3:00 p.m.

bell from Class. It is Queensland Law that no child

under the age of eight years of age should be left

unattended. It is therefore our expectation that

every learner who makes their own way home is

expected to do so in a timely and safe manner. It

has also been disappointing to hear that there have

been some inappropriate behaviours, particularly

whilst wearing Parkhurst State School uniforms.

Please consider reinforcing this important safety

message with your child[ren], especially if they are

expected to make their own way home after school.

Emailed to families in Week Six

Are your details up to date ?

As part of Parkhurst State School’s Student Dress

Code, all learners are expected to wear the correct

school uniform. In Winter, extra layers are required

for the cooler conditions, which include :

‐ the school’s red spray jacket with school logo or

‐ a red or black pullover (available from local

suppliers, including Best and Less, Big W, Kmart,

Lowes, etc)

‐ black track pants

‐ black ‘leggings’ under shorts and skirts

Denim items (including jeans) or jumpers, pullovers

or jackets with graphic prints should not be worn.

We encourage all girls to wear red or black bows or

hair ties. Large bows, multi-coloured head bands,

etc, are not a part of our uniform. Studs or sleepers

should be worn and any necklaces must be worn

inside shirts to avoid potential accidents.

Parkhurst State School’s Student Dress Code also

encourages learners to wear shorts or skirts at an

appropriate and acceptable length. The items

available for sale at the Parkhurst State School

P&C’s Uniform Shop are an indication of the

expected lengths.

‘Extreme’ haircuts, including bright colouring,

undercuts, tracks, etc are strongly discouraged as

are false fingernails and additional body piercings

under our Workplace Health and Safety Policy.

Please do not hesitate to contact your child[ren]’s

Class Teacher[s] or Administration if you require any

clarification, direction or support.

Parkhurst State School is currenrtly

participating in Jump Rope for

Heart Program, Australia’s most

popular physical activity and

fundraising program in schools. The

program is designed to encourage a positive

attitude towards exercise, healthy eating and heart

health. Participating schools conduct the program

over a three to nine week period. During this time,

learners collect donations and participate in

healthy activities organised at the school.

At the end of the program a special Jump Off Day

is held to celebrate and demonstrate the skills learnt

and health knowledge gained. Thank you prizes are

awarded to participants for their fundraising efforts.

Thank you Mr David Johnson for your work in making

this happen.

Parents and carers are reminded that Semester

One Report Cards will be emailed next Tuesday.

Now is a good time to check that your email

addresses on our system are current.

The Rockhampton Regional Council has advised

that they will be conducting proactive parking

patrols around Parkhurst State School. The first visit

will be education based and Officers will be

providing a Fact Sheet to drivers/parents. This Fact

Sheet is the same one distributed last Term by

Council (and pictured below) concerning road

rules and parking. After this, Officers will return to

the area and Penalty Infringement Notices will be

issued to any vehicle that is in breach of law.

Should you have any queries or questions please do

not hesitate in contacting Council’s Local Laws

Officer Charmaine Stehbens on 1300 225 577.

The 2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge is well

underway and it is pleasing to see so many classes

accepting the challenge. The Challenge

concludes on August 28th 2020. For a learner to

successfully complete the Challenge they are

required to read or experience the number of books

indicated below …

Prep to Year 2 read or ‘experience’ 20 books

Years 3 to 4 read 20 books

Years 5 to 9 read 15 books

Experiencing a book includes classroom or at home

activities such as shared reading, listening and

reading along with a book, or being read to.
