On May 31, 2017, the Calgary Customer Service Team received a Model CP5120L thermoelectric generator (TEG) at the Calgary service centre, originally manufactured and installed in October, 1987, in Drayton Valley, Alberta, Canada. After 30 years of dependable cathodic protection service, the TEG was returned to GPT receiving a new and improved power unit, burner and fuel system. Following the upgrades, the TEG is fully operational and back in service offering continuous, uninterrupted power today. “We pride ourselves on offering a quality product that’s built to last,” said Greg Baerg, GPT Customer Service Manager. “To see a unit come into the plant that’s still running after 30 years was inspirational and simply validated the work we do at GPT every day.” Over the years, the TEG received standard annual preventative maintenance (approximately 1–2 hours of service) and a single power upgrade. Corrosion occurs due to an electrochemical reaction between two electrodes: anodes and cathodes. Cathodic protection is an effective way to combat costly corrosion problems because it minimizes the differences between these two electrodes. Pipelines are normally anodic but when the electric current is supplied the pipeline will become cathodic.
