Genres

• Music is categorised in genres to identify pieces of music belonging to a shared set of conventions. There are a variety of genres in the media industry, some of these include: Pop RnB Country Rap

Pop

• Pop music is one of the most popular genres in society, and it is the type of music that changes and evolves over time due to current trends, fashion and culture. The music is catchy, mainly targeted towards young people and consists of verses and repeated choruses. Pop music can include any style, such as urban, dance or rock, and uses a range of musical instruments. This genre can include short to medium length songs and it generally includes melodic tunes.

RnB

• RnB music is a genre that combines elements of rhythm and blues, soul, pop, dance and hip hop. This genre consists of upbeat, funky music and was originated in the 60s. RnB music has changed over the years, today it has a distinctively different sound as it focuses on pop beats and culture rather than blues, gospel and jazz sounds of previous generations. Like most music genres RnB has evolved to become a mix of different styles of music, which is relevant and trendy to the current society.

Country

• Country music is a genre that was originated in Southern United States. It often consists of ballads and dance tunes, and songs within this genre are generally sang in harmony. This form of music has expanded to include a range of different sub-genres, and consists of a variety of instruments (harmonic, guitar – electric & acoustic, banjo). Songs from the country genre tend to convey a story to the audience and they illustrates the artists emotions and feelings. Country music provides a sense of meaning and subtle message about life.

Rap

• Rap is when an individuals rhymes to the beat of music. It is a style of popular music that consists of a recurring beat, it uses slang language and the words are spoken rather than sung. Musicians from this genre express their views, whether it may be from their own life experiences, or from society in general. Rap music is fast, catchy and something an individual is able to dance to. This genre has become popular over the years and it combines with different genres such as pop.
