Nichols' documentary modes1 Poetic mode - first appeared in the 1920’s, were a sort of reaction against both the content and the rapidly crystallizing grammar of the early fiction film. The poetic mode moved away from continuity editing and instead organized images of the material world by means of associations and patterns, both in terms of time and space

2 Expository mode - speak directly to the viewer, often in the form of an authoritative commentary employing voiceover or titles, proposing a strong argument and point of view. These films are rhetorical, and try to persuade the viewer.

3 Participatory mode – believe that it is impossible for the act of filmmaking to not influence or alter the events being filmed. What these films do is emulate the approach of the anthropologist: participant-observation. Not only is the filmmaker part of the film, we also get a sense of how situations in the film are affected or altered by her presence.

4 Observational mode - attempt to simply and spontaneously observe lived life with a minimum of intervention. Filmmakers who worked in this sub-genre often saw the poetic mode as too abstract and the expository mode as too didactic.

5 Reflexive mode - don’t see themselves as a transparent window on the world; instead they draw attention to their own contractedness, and the fact that they are representations.

6 Performative mode - stress subjective experience and emotional response to the world. They are strongly personal, unconventional, perhaps poetic and/or experimental, and might include hypothetical enactments of events designed to make us experience what it might be like for us to possess a certain specific perspective on the world that is not our

Genre/style of my producthttps://collaborativedocumentary.wordpress.com/6-types-of-documentary/ - from this website I found there were seven different types of documentaries. I read each, and chose two in which is the style I would like to film my product in.

• 6. Performative documentaries stress subjective experience and emotional response to the world. They are strongly personal, unconventional, perhaps poetic and/or experimental, and might include hypothetical enactments of events designed to make us experience what it might be like for us to possess a certain specific perspective on the world that is not our own.

• 5. Observational documentaries attempt to simply and spontaneously observe lived life with a minimum of intervention. Filmmakers who worked in this sub-genre often saw the poetic mode as too abstract and the expository mode as too didactic.

- I would like my music documentary to be a mixture between performative documentaries and observational documentaries.

Documentary modes De Bromhead’s documentary modes1 Linear mode – Classic/Hollywood storytelling; character-based, follows standard three-act structure, based around conflict and resolution as a storytelling

2 Discursive mode - gives priority to information, facts and logic, typical of current affairs documentaries, political documentaries, may give more space to cinematic concerns than purely journalistic filmmaking, often utilises archive footage to illustrate the story.

3 Episodic mode - juxtaposes situations that have no narrative or causal relations, meaning is produced by the juxtaposition of the episodes, often ordered around one dominant theme or idea

4 Poetic mode - built up around audio visual poetic associations, films avoid following a specific storyline or conventional narrative logic, utilizes similar structures to poetry such as metaphor and disjunction.5 Hybrid mode - the linear logic of passing time is used to structure the narrative in either linear or episodic form.

I would like to make my documentary a mixture between the Poetic and Discursive mode from De Bromhead’s theory of the modes od documentaries; also a mixture between the theories of perfomative and observational documentaries. This is because I feel I would like to make my documentary emotive, and distant from the members of the band, also using footage from the past intertwined with footage fro the present date
