Genre Jump • Objective : students show they understand different genres. • Age approximation : grades 2-4 • Materials needed : either mini game board (played with fingers instead of legs) or genre titles printed on cardstock and laminated- placed in a hopscotch formation. • The basic game : – Either set up the mini board for each pair or a few sets of hopscotch games with one genre per page to jump on. – Put students into pairs. – Students must toss a coin/pebble, etc. to see how far they will go. They must explain the genre they land on. • Ideas for enhancement : – You may want to make lasting board by gluing printed papers onto poster board. – You could require they get a book from that genre as well. – For experienced readers, you could have students name a book off the top of their head that they have read that matches that genre for a bonus.
