GENQEC Model

3

o Combination of GENQSC and GENESC proposed earlier

o Based on 2nd-order generator equivalent circuits in IEEE Std 1110

o Same base as GENROU, GENROE, GENSAL and GENSAE models

o Magnetic saturation considered on both stator and rotor inductance terms

o Quadratic or exponential saturation function selectable in model data

o Suitable for representing both round-rotor and salient-pole units

o High accuracy of field current across whole generator operating range

o Field current compensation factor derived from generator zero-power-

factor characteristics, or fitted from field measurement data

o Appropriate for generator model validation using field test data

GENQEC (GENQSC) Results

6

o Derivation process from equivalent circuit to model block diagram given

in reference publications [3] and [4]

o GENQSC steady-state field current accuracy improvement

demonstrated in reference publication [3]

o GENQSC dynamic performance improvement compared in reference

publication [4]

o GENQSC model rotor angle compared in reference publication [5]

using simple magnetic saturation method on both d- and q-axis

o GENQEC model simulation results using TSAT (Powertech Labs

DSATools) presented on following pages

Page 7: GENQEC Generator Model - WECC - GENQSE Generator Model.pdfGENQEC Model 3 o Combination of GENQSC and GENESC proposed earlier o Based on 2nd-order generator equivalent circuits in IEEE

GENQEC TSAT Simulation Results

7

o Results on round-rotor and salient-pole in-service generating units

o Generating unit model parameters previously validated through field

testing, based on manufacture-provided generator parameters

o Simulation results compared with field measurement where applicable

o Compensation factor for GENTPJ & GENQEC was chosen to have high

field accuracy at highest load with high field current

o Compensation factor in GENQEC model has no impact on rotor angle

o Field tests simulated:

o Offline AVR Voltage reference step response

o Online AVR voltage reference step response with and without PSS

o Assumed short-circuits at generator terminals for 0.1 second

Page 26: GENQEC Generator Model - WECC - GENQSE Generator Model.pdfGENQEC Model 3 o Combination of GENQSC and GENESC proposed earlier o Based on 2nd-order generator equivalent circuits in IEEE

Conclusions and Future Work

26

o Better modeled steady-state field current accuracy than all existing 2nd-

order generator dynamic models using a field compensation factor

o Fairly accurate simulated generator rotor angle by simply applying open-

circuit saturation characteristic to both d- and q-axis inductance terms

o Equivalent circuit and block diagram representations facilitate the

application of operational impedance and small-signal stability analysis

o GENQEC simulated dynamic response closely match field measurements

from generator model parameter validation test

o Next: Good results expected for extensive testing of GENQEC using

generator model validation test results

o Next: Acceptance and implementation of GENQEC in commonly-used

power system analysis software
