Community Mediation Upper Shore, Inc. (CMUS) has been serving Queen Anne’s and Kent Counties for over fifteen years providing free conflict resolution services through mediation sessions, facilitation, and conflict awareness education.

For example, long time neighbors cross charged one another with trespassing and malicious destruction of property. Through mediation, an agreement was reached between these two neighbors, the relationship was repaired, and charg-es were dropped saving court costs and time.

During this COVID-19 time, CMUS banded together with Community Mediation Centers across the State of Maryland moving our services to on-line mediation helping parents make plans about the care of their children while sequestered, landlords and tenants make plans about how the rent is going to get paid while people are furloughed and out of work, businesses and customers in the midst of small claims resolving before courts open, and many other circumstances un-foreseen ten weeks ago.

CMUS mediators have at least 40 hours of basic mediation training and go on to train in advance mediation subjects focusing on child access/parenting plans, family reunification for those leaving incarceration or recovery residences, peace teams focusing on mediating disputes between students and/or students and their teachers, and IEP facilitations. Programs, when we aren’t sequestered, include: Partnerships with Kent and Queen Anne’s County Family Courts and District Courts, Peace Teams serving on-site at Queen Anne’s Public Schools, Re-entry mediation services for Kent County Detention Center, After school pro-grams combining art with conflict awareness, and Conflict awareness workshops for youth groups, workplaces, and other groups.

CMUS is mostly supported by the Maryland Administrative Offices of the Court through the Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office and Department of Juvenile and Family Services, and we are also supported by both United Ways of Kent and of Queen Anne’s Counties and both County governments, MidShore Community Foundation, Women and Girls Fund, Kent County Arts Council, and community member donations. Anyone can make a referral and we look to community mem-bers to become volunteers.

If you or someone you know could use some help having a difficult conversa-tion, please leave a message 410-810-9188 or fill out an on-line form by visiting www.CMUSmediation.org. Community Mediation Upper Shore provides media-tion services free of charge.

If you think becoming a mediator is something that might appeal to you, again, please leave a message or fill out the form. A staff member will contact you within two business days.

university of maryland shore regional health

Don’t put off getting the health care you need. Throughout the University of Maryland Medical System, online doctor visits are available to keep you well. Using a secure connection with your smartphone, tablet or computer, it’s as easy as seeing your provider from the kitchen counter or the living room couch. It may be a different way of delivering medicine, but there’s no change in our mission. It’s all about keeping you and your family healthy for the future.

Yard Signs Thanking the Front Line Also Benefit COVID-19 Fund

Yard signs expressing thanks to local Frontline workers in the COVID-19 crisis are available through an initiative created by the Downtown Chestertown Association and Main Street Historic Chestertown to benefit the Chester River Health Foundation.

The sign’s message is, “THANK YOU FRONT LINE: Hospital Staff, First Responders, Essential Workers. You’re Awesome!” The graphic design, which features a silhouette of Kent County, was donated by Locust Grove Studios in Kennedyville. The DCA is covering the costs of the signs, with production service provided by Riverside Unique in downtown Chestertown.

Those who want to display signs in front of their homes or businesses are asked to make a donation of $20 or more per sign. Signs will be delivered to any residence or business in Kent County for a $2 fee, or can be picked up Saturdays between 9:00am and noon outside Chestertown’s Town Hall located at 118 North Cross Street.

To order online, go to mainstreetchestertown.org and then navigate to the “Buy Now, Enjoy Later” page already set up for the purchase of gift certificates from local shops and restaurants. To order by mail and pay by check, email [email protected] for an order form.

BDB: Off to the races?

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources offers license-free fishing days on June 6th, June 13th, and July 4th — a free option to explore Maryland’s diverse and unique fishing experiences without needing a fishing license, trout stamp, or registration.

Following Governor Hogan’s announcement of Stage One of the ‘Maryland Strong: Roadmap to Recovery,’ the state has expanded opportu-nities for outdoor exercise and

recreation in the state. Anglers are advised to follow social distancing and other precautions as outlined in the department’s update regarding Maryland outdoor recreation.

Maryland hosts license-free fishing days annually on the first two Saturdays in June and on the Independence Day holiday. On these days, any individual may catch and possess finfish in any tidal and nontidal waters of Maryland, as long as it’s for recreational purposes. All anglers must follow current size and catch limits found in the department’s fishing and crabbing guide.

The department also has dozens of other resources to help new or experienced anglers, including angler access maps, Click Before You Cast environmental monitoring reports, and fish identification charts.

Aside from these free fishing days and certain license-free areas, anyone 16 or older fishing in Maryland must possess a license, which can be obtained or re-newed online or on the department’s mobile app. During the current State of Emergency, Governor Hogan has granted a grace period for anyone whose valid license has expired since March 5th, 2020.

For more information visit https://news.maryland.gov/dnr/2020/05/28/free- fishing-days-scheduled-in-june-and-july/ or call 1-877-620-8DNR (8367).

LLR: Magster strong!

Words For Reviewby Lanny Parks

Perhaps, like me, you have had a difficult time during the past nearly three months. Whether you have continued to work, ei-ther at your normal place of employment or at your home, or whether you are retired or simply out of work for the meantime, there are still many hours to fill with house-hold chores, yard and garden work, chil-dren to tend to - and there is still grieving, and anger, and frustration, and a host of other emotions too deep for words.

Now, on top of the many ways in which we have been asked to face the pandemic, there is this time of civil unrest that many find frightening. I don’t know about you, but I have spent a lot of these months in my own head. For the most part, I have been engaged in solitary activities: gar-dening, cooking, weaving, knitting, and reading that have kept me apart from oth-ers and in company with only myself. It has been a disquieting companionship.

Nearly sixty years ago, I was working in Baltimore’s inner city, where I had the distinct privilege of working with African-American teenagers whose lives were a struggle at home, at school, and on the streets. The library was their only safe place. When the riots following the death of Dr. Martin Luther King erupted in our city, those young people were caught on the horns of a dilemma. Their sanctuary was staffed entirely by white people who had cared for them, befriended them, taken them to places both in reality and in books and music where they had never been before and where they found real peace - and yet the anger and frustration of that assassination unhinged everything they had put their trust in.

When the library reopened, they were al-most the first people through the doors. We talked together. We despaired to-gether. We tried to find hope together. And when it was time for me to go home, they

walked me to the bus stop - to protect me. I was transferred shortly thereafter, and the library itself has long since been closed and its space converted to some other use, but I have never stopped think-ing of those young people and wonder-ing if they found their way off the streets and into better places, places where they could excel with the gifts and skills they owned that had been trampled by a sys-tem of both society and government that didn’t see them, didn’t hear them, didn’t care about them. Tragically, the odds are not good.

And here we are. Two or three genera-tions beyond that time, and yet I still see that same system, that same inequity that I tried to breach all those years ago. Today as I go about my solitary hours, I some-times find myself unable to see for the tears that fill my eyes and run unhindered down my cheeks. How can this be? How can our country go this far backward? How can we not have corrected these glaring inequalities after all these years? And what will it take to change hearts and minds in order to change the system to guarantee the equality we are promised in our constitution?

The way I read it, we have a mandate to make major changes in our entire system - of government, of education, of justice, of protection. I have never been convinced that such a system of true democracy (where each voice is heard with an equal measure of fairness) is ever going to occur in a capitalistic society. When it is “every man for himself” and “to the victor goes the spoils”, how can it?

We are called now to re-envision our en-tire framework, just as we were sixty years ago. We have not done so well up until now, but we had best be making time to start - and there is no time like the present to begin.

The truth of the matter is I am afraid she will do a background check on me. She seems a little sharper than my last few mommas. I slipped and she knows my birth date and full name. Should I just hope that my talents outweigh her curiosity? I am totally pumped about her – she has a lot to offer. Smooth Operator

June 15th-21stYour Weekly Horoscope By Sally Brompton

SALLY BROMPTON WEEKLY HOROSCOPE

Visit Sally at www.sallybrompton.com

IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK:The message of your birthday chart is that you must use recent events as guides to what

comes next. You may not realize it yet but the challenges you have been through have prepared you for the opportunities now coming your way. It’s your turn to shine.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20):You are not the sort to take heed of advice you have not asked for, but it will pay you to listen to what a friend tells you this week. It could be they can see something that you have missed, something you are too close to personally to recognize.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 21):Don’t try to take all the credit for something that was a joint effort. Yes, your input was of major importance but you could not have done it without assistance from other people, so give credit where credit is due. There’s enough praise for everyone.

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21):The more you try to figure something out the further away from an answer you seem to find yourself. Take the hint and back off a bit. Sometimes the best way to get at the truth is to let it come to you in its own good time.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23):A situation you have been doing your best to pretend does not exist can no longer be avoided. Your task this week is to face up to what it means to you personally without taking it personally. If you can do that then a solution can easily be found.

LEO (July 24 - Aug. 23):There is no point trying to hide your feelings from other people because your emotions can be read on your face as if it were a book. The fact that you have strong likes and dislikes must not be denied. Let others know what you feel, and why.

VIRGO (Aug. 24 - Sept. 23):You may not see eye-to-eye with people in positions of authority this week, but don’t let it worry you and certainly don’t try to change your way of thinking just to please them. Chances are they will respect you more if you stick with your beliefs.

LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23):You can sense there is something going on that you should know about, but the more you probe the less you seem to find. Stop trying so hard and let your mind focus instead on things you enjoy. The answer will make itself known when you least expect it.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22):The planets warn you could miss out on something good because you are determined to believe that so many things are bad. Remember, the thoughts you send out to the universe are the thoughts that come back to you in the form of events – so be positive!

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 - Dec. 21):Try to be excited about what you have to do this week, even though on the surface it would appear to be the most tedious task you could be involved with. It is often the little things that have the biggest impact, so find some joy among the details.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20):Don’t be afraid to ask those around you for guidance and advice. You may feel it’s a sign of weakness to admit that you cannot handle what you are experiencing on your own but it’s actually a sign of maturity. Why suffer in silence when help is available?

AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19):Don’t worry too much if someone whose power exceeds your own makes life difficult for you this week. The only way they can beat you is if you allow yourself to get upset and react in ways they can use to make you look bad. Laugh at them instead.

PISCES (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20):You will hear something to your advantage this week, but you may be reluctant to use the information because you feel it isn’t fair that others have been left out of the loop. There’s a reason for that – it’s because you’ll make better use of it than they will.

Ticks and Tick DiseaseFrom late spring through early fall is the time of year during which ticks are most

active. It is important to take precautions to avoid a tick bite and the possibility of resultant tick disease.

Ticks commonly found in the northeastern area of the United States include the deer tick, lone star tick, American dog tick, and the wood tick. Ticks are most commonly found in the woods and marshy places in bushes, shrubs, leaf litter and tall grass. Many tick-borne diseases can be contracted simultaneously from one tick bite, but not every tick bite transmits disease. Some ticks are extremely small – the tick that transmits Lyme disease may be smaller than a sesame seed.

In order to enjoy the outdoors and at the same time avoid tick bites, wear long pants and long sleeves to help keep ticks off your skin. Tuck your shirt into pants, and pants into socks to keep ticks on the outside of clothing. Wear light colored clothing to help you spot ticks more easily. Spray insect repellent on clothes and exposed skin; consult your pharmacist for the type of repellent suitable for you and your family members of different ages. Also talk to your veterinarian about tick control products for your pets, to help avoid your pet bringing a tick into your home. When hiking, walk in the center of the trail when in woods or high grass. Stay away from brushy areas, high grass and leaf litter. Check for ticks daily after being in tick habitat. And remember, ticks can be found in your own back yard!

To remove a tick use fine tipped tweezers and protect your hands with tissues or gloves. Grab the tick close to the skin – do not twist or jerk the tick. Gently pull straight up until all parts of the tick are removed. Clean the tick bite with soap and water or an antiseptic. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based rub. Do not use petroleum jelly, a hot match, nail polish or other products to remove ticks.

Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in Maryland and is transmitted by the bite of an infected black-legged tick, which must be attached for at least 24 hours for transmission to occur. From three to thirty days after a tick bite, a gradually expanding rash (called erythema migrans) can occur at the site of the bite in 70-80% of infected people. The rash can expand over several days up to 12 inches and may resemble a bull’s eye. If untreated, Lyme disease may cause a loss of muscle tone on one or both sides of the face, severe headaches and neck stiffness, shooting pains that can interrupt sleep, heart palpitations, dizziness, and pain that shifts from joint to joint. After several months, 60% of untreated patients my develop severe joint pain and swelling, particularly in the knees. Five percent of untreated patients may experience shooting pains, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, and problems with concentration and short term memory.

Contact your health care provider if you develop any of these symptoms after a tick bite or after being in a tick habitat. Most cases of tick-borne disease can be cured with antibiotics, especially when treatment is started early.

Community “Yarn Bomb”Planned in Rock Hall

Calling all artists, knitters and community members eager to engage in a fun project! Rock Hall Elementary School and Main Street Rock Hall invite your participation in creating a one-of-a-kind piece of public art that will be a fun and fanciful tribute to the Chesapeake Bay and its bounty and will be displayed in Rock Hall.

Participants are asked to use acrylic yarn to create a one-dimensional (flat) creature or native plant representative of the Bay and its bio-diversity (i.e., fish, crabs, oysters, grasses, Osprey, Eagle.) Creations should be at least one foot in length, but the bigger the better! The area of the completed project will be six feet high by 60 feet long. Knit, crochet, and counted cross stitch are just a few ways you can use the yarn to make your creation.

Please drop off finished creations at Bayside Foods or Fresh Start in Rock Hall. The deadline for submissions is June 17th, with plans to hang the mural during the last week of June.

Complete guidelines are available at https://www.mainstreetrockhall.org/rock-hall-yarn-bomb/.

For more information or the donation of acrylic yarn, needles or crochet hooks, please contact Laurie Walters at [email protected]. You may also visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RJfSzS9XhA to view a short video about “yarn bombing”.

GOOD NEWS PAGENewsworthy Notes From You The Readers

Celebration of Charities Awards Luncheon to Honor COVID-19 Heroes

Chesapeake Charities’ 5th an-nual Celebration of Charity is set for Thursday, November 5th at Chesapeake Bay Beach Club in Stevensville and will recognize heroic actions taken by local citi-zens who were on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. The an-nual luncheon recognizes people and organizations that exemplify the qualities of leadership, com-munity service and altruism. The celebration includes three catego-ries of award recipients: Volunteer of the Year; Nonprofit of the Year; and Philanthropist of the Year. Due to the many stories of heroism, there may be several honorees se-lected in each category. Nomina-tion forms are available online at www.ChesapeakeCharities.org or by calling 410-643-4020. Nomina-tions are due by Monday, June 15th.

“This year we will honor those who made personal sacrifices to benefit others during the COVID-19 pan-demic,” said Linda Kohler, Chesa-peake Charities executive director. “We want to recognize people like nurses, who left their children and families behind to care for others; firefighters and EMTs, who en-tered the homes of those stricken and risked personal exposure; the food processors, truck drivers, and grocery store clerks who worked tirelessly to ensure we all had food during the pandemic.”

The inspiration for this year’s theme came from Brittany Forker, who lives in Wye Mills and works as a firefighter in Prince George’s County. During the spike in cas-es that ravaged communities in Prince George’s County, Forker and her fellow firefighters saw as many as nine COVID-19 patients per day. Before each call, she and the other responders had to suit up in full gear, with masks and face shields. On the calls, the respond-ers encountered terribly sick peo-ple who needed immediate trans-portation to a hospital. After each call, the firefighters had to dispose of personal protective equipment (PPE), disrobe, take a shower and wash their hair. This routine hap-pened again and again with each new call. Some days, Forker suited up, transported, disrobed, show-ered and washed her hair dozens of times. When Forker, the mother of a 3-month-old boy, returned home each night, she stripped down in the mud room, show-ered and washed her hair before

going inside to see her husband and baby. The hand washing and repeated use of disinfectant spray left her hands cracked and bleed-ing. And, a workplace that had been fun and full of laughter and camaraderie, became a somber, stressful environment.

“This is the level of sacrifice those on the front lines are making,” Kohler said. “It’s a really difficult situation, and we are proud to rec-ognize and honor our local com-munity heroes during this year’s celebration in November.”

Chesapeake Charities is asking the community-at-large to submit nominations of people like Fork-er. Philanthropist of the Year will recognize an individual who has demonstrated outstanding gener-osity and community leadership. Volunteer of the Year will honor someone who has gone above and beyond in fulfilling their ser-vice role. Nonprofit of the Year will be presented to an organiza-tion that has consistently provid-ed vital support to communities and families. The Governor Larry Hogan Scholarship for cancer re-search also will be presented at the event. Nominees must be from one of the nine counties served by Chesapeake Charities: Anne Arun-del, Calvert, Caroline, Charles, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, St. Mary’s and Talbot.

Located in Stevensville, Chesa-peake Charities is a community foundation that supports more than 95 nonprofit funds that im-pact a range of charitable causes including animal welfare, arts, education, health and human ser-vices, and the environment. To date they have generated more than $25 million in investment and grant funding for charitable projects. For more information call 410-643-4020, email [email protected], or visit www.chesapeakecharities.org.

The Peoples Bank Board Bids Farewellto Strong, Welcomes Duncan and Hill

It is with both gratitude and sad-ness that The Peoples Bank an-nounces the resignation of long-serving member of the Board of Directors, Elizabeth A. (Betty Ann) Strong. A member of the Board of Directors for 25 years, Strong was the first woman elected to the Board, a significant milestone for the Bank. During her long tenure, Strong served as a member of the Personnel Committee, as a trustee of the Retirement Plan, and as the Secretary of the Board.

Strong is the former owner and manager of the Rock Hall Insur-ance Agency in Rock Hall, Mary-land. The Peoples Bank is grateful for her many years of dedicated service and commitment to the Bank and the community it serves.

“Betty Ann promoted and rep-resented The Peoples Bank for a quarter-century,” commented Tad

Wheatley, Chairman of the Board of Peoples Bancorp, Inc. “She worked steadfastly through good times and bad for the Bank and the community. In the Rock Hall market, Betty Ann was a source of faithful counsel for the officers of the Bank. Her happy personality and gracious smile will be missed by the directors and employees.”

As Strong vacates her position, the Bank is elated to also announce the Board of Directors will be gaining two new members, Corey Duncan and Herman (Trey) Hill.

Duncan, a Certified Public Ac-countant and Certified Business Manager, holds a B.A. in Econom-ics & Business Administration from McDaniel College as well as an M.B.A. from Mount St. Mary’s College. Duncan is currently a Partner and Executive Commit-tee Member for TGM Group,

LLC, a Tax and Accounting Firm in Easton, Maryland. Previously, Duncan owned a successful tax and accounting firm for 15 years before merging with his current organization.

Duncan brings a multitude of Board experience to The Peoples Bank, with previous board mem-berships supporting the United Fund of Talbot County, Bryan Brothers Foundation, Talbot Hos-pice, Easton Rotary Youth and Community Fund, and the Chesa-peake College Foundation Board.

Hill, a nationally-recognized en-vironmentalist, is Manager and Partner at Harborview Farms, a successful large-scale farming op-eration where he has been a part-ner since 1998. Hill graduated from Perdue University with a B.A. in Farm Management, and speaks na-tionally and internationally about

sustainable f a r m i n g practices.

Hill current-ly serves on the Board of the Hughes Center for Agro Ecol-ogy, Shore-Rivers, and the FMC

Sustainability Council (the 4th larg-est Agricultural Chemical Com-pany in the world). He formerly served on the Kent County Plan-ning and Zoning Board of Appeals, United Way, and the Sassafras Riverkeepers. Hill has received recognition from the White House as a Champion of Change recipi-ent for his innovation in climate-smart farming and was a recipient of the 2020 Purdue University Dis-tinguished Agricultural Alumni Award.

“All of us at The Peoples Bank are excited to welcome our new-est members to the Board of Di-rectors,” said Ralph Dowling, President and CEO of The Peoples Bank. “Trey and Corey are both standouts in their respective fields and will add great depth and ex-pertise to the Board. We couldn’t be more honored to have them join the team.”
