THESIS: Junk Island

This thesis begins with the notion of helping Singapore take the next step in development.

From a fishing village to a first world nation, Singapore is at a point in time where development goes beyond the struggle of basics needs.

The thesis proposes for a processing centre for the Rohingya refugees located at Pulau Semakau, where the refugees will eventually be trained and educated as green warriors before they leave for their final country.

In the process of training and educating, the refugees will in turn build an island destination that is made out of rubbish. This creates a win-win situation for both parties involved; where the refugees get processed & Singapore gain global rec-ognition and also a new destination.

Essentially, the architecture is a tool in territorial negotiation be-tween Singapore & the refugees.

HAZE GARDEN HANAMI GARDEN

The island is made for both Singaporeans and Rohingya. Its most immediate function however is to help Rohingya assim-ilate themselves to their final country. This then becomes the motivation in the design of each garden proposed; Trash, Han-ami, Hot & Haze.

The trash paradise becomes a space in which the rohingya learns the processes and necessary knowledge of green war-riors.

Hanami, Hot & Haze paradise are spaces in which the Rohing-ya begins to learn the ways of living in an urban context where cultural activities such as appreciation towards nature, luxury such as sports are part of the lifestyle of urban dwellers.

Singaporeans enters the paradise to realise the amount of rubbish produced which is hidden and left unspoken of

HANAMI PARADISE

The introduction of flower appreciation in Singapore helps Singaporean realise the beauty of their own country that is largely taken for granted and overlooked.

HOT PARADISE

This paradise becomes a celebration of our hot weather as they escape into cooling themselves in the array of pools designed.

HAZE PARADISE

This paradise provides an escape from the haze and also raises the awareness through the construction material (palm oil) on the reason for the haze.

The central building in the hanami garden illustrates how the idea of island functions in an architecture.

Singaporeans uses the space as a viewing deck for the appreci-ation of flowering trees.

Rohingyas uses the space as a plant nursery and constructing structures for the garden.

In a nutshell, this is a paradise where the combination of all things negatives seen by Singaporeans into something that could possibly be helpful and positive as the thesis attempts to give an alternative perspective in hope of change.

As the name suggest, Delight in Crowd is a project where my partner and I tries to bring delightfulness into dense housing.Based in Munich, this project is challenging the idea of density at site. This motivation was based on how different the ger-man’s feel about density compared to us, Singaporeans.

YEAR IV: Delight in Crowd

The brief required a car depot for electronic cars, commercial and residential in the site given at Paya Lebar. The design was to relook at the current carpark typology and to improve on the current idea of a conventional carpark leading to a new typology for both residential, carpark & commercial.

In this space, residents are able to have their own car parked right outside of their house, while shoppers can almost shop from their cars.

The brief begins with the idea of redesigning the hawker centre alongside with a social enterprise to help create a bustling community in the neighbourhood.

The design begins with questioning the typology of the current hawker, where hawkers stalls struggle for more space to adver-tise for their food. Hence, the stalls are broken down into differ-ent clusters for hawkers to have two faces for advertisement as customers flows in from all direction.

The idea of the playfarm then manisfest itself around the dif-ferent units as students from the neighbourhood come to learn more about cultivating their own food. The herbs and vegeta-bles cultivated will then be sold at the market below and also be supplied to the hawkers stall. This help younger generationtoday to understand the cycle of their food which is so rarely seen these days.
