2009 Genetics review Course

Course Description and Program FormatThe Review Course 2 ½ day format provides an intense learning environment with exam preparation lectures that cover a broad range of genetics topics including prenatal genetics, genetic screening, quantitative genetics, genetic syndromes and malformations, biochemical genetics, can-cer genetics, basic cytogenetics, chromosomal syndromes, genetics of common disorders and molecular genetics. Lectures and workshops will be presented by recognized experts in these fields.

The lectures will be reinforced by a syllabus specifically designed to complement the material covered. Lectures will be supplemented with exam workshops utilizing an Audience Response System that will allow for interactive learning, in-depth coverage of exam content areas and will facilitate audience participation, enabling participants to respond to questions representative of those found on the Board exams, as well as receive feedback in real time.

Participants will take a pre-course examination composed of multiple-choice questions similar to those one might encounter in Board examinations. These will be graded and the answers to these and other practice questions will be discussed in the exam workshops.

Course ObjectivesUpon completion of this Course, the participant should be able to:

• Identify common genetic syndromes and discuss their clinical features.

• Interpret standard molecular data and explain how to communicate results to families.

• Perform simple quantitative genetic calculations and solve related problems.

• Understand basic cytogenetics and identify features of common chromosomal disorders.

• Recognize clinical features of selected metabolic disorders and describe their molecular basis and review how to provide counseling about them.

• Appreciate the extents and limits of prenatal tests and explain how to perform routine prenatal genetic counseling.

• Understand clinical and molecular aspects of inherited cancer syndromes and know how to provide counseling for common human cancers.

Target AudienceThis course is designed to assist genetics healthcare professionals who are seeking to update and reinforce their general knowledge of medical genetics.

Accreditation: CME and CEU CreditCME and CEU credit will be offered for this Course (and the cost is included in the registration fee). This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. The American College of Medical Genetics is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

ACMG is an acceptable CEU provider for the National Credentialing Agency for Lab Personnel, Inc. The College will designate contact hours of continuing education credit (NCALP CEUs) for the meeting.

Registration Fees Include:Attendance at all sessions, Course Syllabus (print and CD versions) PLUS all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner and breaks on Friday and Saturday, breakfast, and morning break on Sunday) and a reception on Saturday evening.

Membership RateTo receive the member rate to attend the 2009 ACMG Genetics Review Course, current members must be in good standing with their 2009 dues paid by March 31, 2009. All non-members must register at the non-member rate. Any-one applying for membership to the American College of Medical Genetics prior to the 2009 Genetics Review Course must have their completed application packet received by the College no later than May 15, 2009. The College will reimburse the difference between the member and non-member rate to Genetics Review Course registrants whose completed applications are received no later than May 15, 2009, and approved by the Membership Committee. Applicable reimbursements will be made in the month following the course. Any applications received after May 16, 2009 will be processed following the Review Course, and no reimbursement will be issued. Cancellation/Refund PolicyAll requests for cancellation of your registration for the 2009 Genetics Review Course must be made in writing and received by May 22, 2009. A $75.00 processing fee will be withheld. Registration fees are non-refundable for cancellations received after May 22, 2009. Registrations are not transferable.
