Genesis of Love Secret of the Blueprint

Visitors, we’re glad you’ve come to share this Sabbath morning with us. We extend a special welcome to Health & Fitness Symposium 2012 participants. While there is extra room in our pews with the students gone, please know there is room in our Pioneer heart for you. May this morning’s worship celebration bring a special gift to you from Jesus, and may it last all week long. We are glad you came!

WELCOME!

THE FOURTH WATCH

That’s what a new Danish study has concluded. Actually, it’s 6.2 years

for men and 5.8 years for women—the number of years a jogger will live longer than a non-jogger. Six years!

I have a friend who has sworn off jogging. He quips, “If you want pain in the morning, just get out of bed and stick your fingers in your eyes—that should do it!” But the Copenhagen Heart Study that began back in 1976 just last week announced these startling findings. Peter Schnohr, chief cardiologist with this study, said in a news release from the European Society of Cardiology: “The results of our research allow us to definitively answer the question of whether jogging is good for your health. We can say with certainty that regular jogging increases longevity. The good news is that you don’t actually need to do that much to reap the benefits” (http://health.yahoo.net/

REVIVAL & REFORMATION

If prayer is like a conversation with God, do we feel as comfortable

as Abraham was in telling our God what we really feel? He knows anyway! Shouldn’t we even be friends enough to be able to reverently bargain with Him?

“Then God said, ‘Shall I keep back from Abraham what I’m about to do? … The cries of the victims in Sodom and Gomorrah are deafening; the sin of those cities is immense. I’m going down to see for myself, see if what they’re doing is as bad as it sounds. Then I’ll know.’

Abraham confronted him, ‘Are you serious? Are you planning on getting rid of the good people right along with the bad? What if there are fifty decent people left in the city; will you lump the good with the bad and get rid of the lot? Wouldn’t you spare the city for the sake of those fifty innocents? I can’t believe you’d do that, kill off the good and the bad alike as if there were no difference between them. Doesn’t the Judge of all the Earth judge with justice?’

God said, ‘If I find fifty decent people in the city of Sodom, I’ll spare the place just for them.’

Abraham came back, ‘Do I, a mere mortal made from a handful of dirt, dare open my mouth again to my Master? What if the fifty fall short by five—would you destroy the city because of those missing five?’

He said, ‘I won’t destroy it if there are forty-five.’

Abraham spoke up again, ‘What if you only find forty?’

‘Neither will I destroy it if for forty.’He said, ‘Master, don’t be irritated

with me, but what if only thirty are found?’

‘No, I won’t do it if I find thirty.’He pushed on, ‘I know I’m trying

your patience, Master, but how about for twenty?’

‘I won’t destroy it for twenty.’He wouldn’t quit, ‘Don’t get angry,

Master—this is the last time. What if you only come up with ten?’

‘For the sake of only ten, I won’t destroy the city.’

When God finished talking with Abraham, he left. And Abraham went home.” Genesis 18: 17-33 [The Message]

For many years, God’s Abundant Pantry (GAP), a food ministry of PMC,

has impacted the lives of thousands of students at Andrews University. Originally called Project P, this twice-a-week ministry is a “safety net” for students, especially those who come from other countries. The day I visited about 70 people lined up to receive the fresh produce (potatoes, turnips and peppers) and staple items such as rice and flour. There was an abundant supply of whole grain bread and juice. Solomon and Joycelyn Ward, directors of this program since 1989, and their team of volunteers were sorting, packaging and distributing the food.

Nishina Hackle, wife of seminary student Keith Hackle, was one of the helpers. “I saw there was a shortage of volunteers and I decided to join the ministry in October of 2011”, commented Nishina. “Not everyone who attends Andrews University has it easy, and this is my way to help families.”

Where does the food come from? “We spend about $1,000 a month to purchase items from the local food bank,” explained Joycelyn. “Our other providers of food are local farmers, Country Life and individual gardeners who want to share their blessings with us.”

The GAP distribution center is located behind Garland Apartments and they are open from 5 to 6:30 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you would like to contribute food, serve as a gleaner during harvest time or help with distribution, please get in touch with GAP’s board director, Dave Riedlinger. God wants us to be serious about His call to help those in need. He takes it personally. In Matthew 25:35, Jesus says, “For when I was hungry, you gave me food”.

Youth Tent Leader: There is a tent at the fair that for many years has

been rented in order to have a place to connect with and minister to the young people who visit the Berrien County Youth Fair. For several years the youth pastors from PMC & Village have worked with leaders to come up with creative options for this space. This has included a focus on warning against alcohol and drugs through hands-on games, or having literature to read with a foosball table. For this year, we are looking for a leader who feels a call to take this ministry. There is a budget and two youth pastors on the team to help. For more

information contact Pastor Micheal at 471.6176 or [email protected]

The youth tent is not all the youth are up to this summer. Twice a week (on Tuesdays & Thursday evenings) there will be activities for the youth in the community, including tubing and water skiing on the lake, soccer and other recreational activities.

A group of 18 will be spending the first part of the summer preparing for our evangelistic mission trip to Panama. In July, we will head south for two full weeks of sharing Jesus. The group will be introduced to you on a Sabbath morning in June.

RMES Kindergarteners have a lot going on as the school year comes

to a close. Mrs. Curnutt has a very full schedule planned just for them.

Our youngest students are continuing to read and write simple words. They’ve already learned their color words and some of the students are pros! In fact, one little boy doesn’t say his colors anymore – he spells them instead!

They have also started learning about dogs. Mrs. Curnutt really wants them to have fun with this one. To make learning about dogs

even more exciting, she has created a “pet clinic” in the classroom! Mrs. Keough will bring her dog “Banjo” to the Kindergarten room for a lesson on pet care.

Students are learning about riddles, addition, missionaries, and getting ready for end-of-the-year performances. It is a lot of good information for these five and six year old students! We are thankful that Jesus has blessed them with a caring, spiritual teacher as they end their first year of school.

RMES / SO MUCH TO LEARN

THE FOURTH WATCH CONTINUED

news/s/hsn/joggers-live-longer-study-says). Three cheers for all of us who have been plodding away early morning after early morning!

But it isn’t my point in this blog to gloat at all. Rather on this weekend that Andrews University is hosting Health and Fitness Symposium 2012, my point is simply that extending your life six years turns out to be a rather simple and uncomplicated proposition. The report notes that “jogging at a slow pace for one to two and a half hours weekly provided the most significant benefits.” Why that’s only 30 minutes a day three to five days a week. That isn’t too high a price for an extra six years of life, is it?

And look at the health payoff: “The study’s authors noted there are several health benefits of jogging that contribute to increased life expectancy, including improvements in: oxygen uptake; insulin sensitivity; lipid profiles (raising ‘good; HDL cholesterol and lowering triglycerides); heart function; bone density; immune function; psychological function. The improved psychological well-being may be due to the fact that people have more social interactions when they’re out jogging, explained Schnohr. The researchers added that jogging also helps lower blood pressure, reduce platelet aggregation

and prevent obesity” (ibid). All of that plus six more years—what a payoff!

Is there a verse in the Bible that commands jogging? No, but there’s one that surely commends it: “Those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength—they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). As it turns out, that’s the motto of our Pioneer Running/Walking Club that Christine Wallace launched several years ago. Today we all proudly wear our T-shirts with motto and logo emblazoned on them. And today we bid farewell to Christine and Ryan (two top-flight

runners and one tri-athlete [Christine]) and their daughters, Faith and Grace, as they head north to Canada for medical and law school. Speaking of health and fitness, they have blessed our congregation and campus in multiple ways through their contagious advocacy of healthy living.

So if you’ve been sitting on the couch and wondering if it’s really worth a simple exercise program, now you know—it’s worth an extra six years of life. So get on up. And go on out. A springtime world of fresh air is waiting for you. And as I’ve discovered in my early morning jogs, Jesus is so big on it He’ll jog along right beside you. And that’s one benefit not even the Copenhagen study can top!

Then God said, “Let us make humanity in our image to resemble us so that they may take charge of the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and all the crawling things on earth.”

God created humanity in God’s own image, in the divine image God created them, male and female God created them.

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and master it. Take charge of the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and everything crawling on the ground.”

Then God said, “I now give to you all the plants on the earth that yield seeds and all the trees whose fruit produces its seeds within it. These will be your food.

God saw everything he had made: it was supremely good. There was evening and there was morning: the sixth day.

MUSIC ALIVEBRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL

Creation sparkles and glows in today’s Hymn of Praise. We reflect

on God’s creatorship with a hymn about the resplendent beauty of His creation, “All Things Bright and Beautiful.” Irish author Cecil Alexander (1818-1895) wished that children would understand the beliefs stated in the catechism, so in children’s hymns she rephrased and amplified various beliefs. The particular subject of this hymn is, “I believe in God the

Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.” Things small (st. 1) and large (st. 2), atmospheric conditions and garden fruits (st. 3), join the grand testimony to the Creator, “Who has made all things well” (st. 4). This grand hymn text is set to an English traditional melody, picturesquely named ROYAL OAK, the melody’s very name furthering the imagery of creation’s wonders.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Almighty God, we gather as your people to praise your holy name.In all creation, you alone are worthy of our praise.

Many things pull at our lives and demand our attention. Our prayer today, Lord, is that you make us attentive to your word for our world.

YOUR HELP NEEDED!As our college students leave our cam-pus bare for the summer, this includes several of our younger Children’s Sab-bath Schools. As summer progresses and our families choose to go on vacation, they leave vacancies also. Between these two factors there are Sabbaths where help is desperately needed. Leaders, small group teach-ers, pianists or just an extra hand to help out are all helpful and or needed. If you are willing to fill any of these for the summer, for a month, every other week, or for an occasional Sabbath, please contact Glenda Davidson at [email protected] or 269.471.4170 letting her know in what capacity you are willing to help.

Pioneer Memorial Church is partici-pating in the CROP Hunger Walk

and we want to invite you to join our team as a walker, jogger, or as a sup-porter. The walk is 6.2 miles on Sunday, May 20 starting at 2:30 PM at the First Congregational Church in St. Joseph. There is also a 1-mile loop for those who can’t walk the entire distance. CROP Hunger Walks help children and

families worldwide—and right here in the U.S.—to have food for today, while building for a better tomorrow. Each year some 2 million CROP Walkers, vol-unteers, and sponsors put their caring into action, raising approximately $16 million per year to help end hunger and poverty around the world -- and in their own communities. Together we can be part of the solution!

HOUSE OF PRAYER WEDNESDAY @ 7 PM, YOUTH CHAPEL

It was a popular series last summer, and so we’re launching it again—with new faces and new stories. Come and join our Board of Elders who will be sharing their personal testimonies with us each Wednesday evening at House of Prayer. Jesus instructed the newly healed demoniac, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you” (Mark 5:19). Let your heart be inspired as you hear the first-person stories of our leaders in their discovery of Jesus. Their new spring-summer series begins this Wednesday, 7 PM, in our youth chapel. Come and be blessed as Carolos Neuman tells his story.
