God Chastise him

• Jer 1:17-2:1

• 17 "Get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them. 18 Today I have made you a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land — against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and the people of the land. 19 They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you," declares the LORD.

To Humble us• 2 Sam 16:5-12• 5 As King David approached Bahurim, a man from the same clan as Saul's family

came out from there. His name was Shimei son of Gera, and he cursed as he came out. 6 He pelted David and all the king's officials with stones, though all the troops and the special guard were on David's right and left. 7 As he cursed, Shimei said, "Get out, get out, you man of blood, you scoundrel! 8 The LORD has repaid you for all the blood you shed in the household of Saul, in whose place you have reigned. The LORD has handed the kingdom over to your son Absalom. You have come to ruin because you are a man of blood!"

• 9 Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king, "Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head."

• 10 But the king said, "What do you and I have in common, you sons of Zeruiah? If he is cursing because the LORD said to him, 'Curse David,' who can ask, 'Why do you do this?'"

• 11 David then said to Abishai and all his officials, "My son, who is of my own flesh, is trying to take my life. How much more, then, this Benjamite! Leave him alone; let him curse, for the LORD has told him to. 12 It may be that the LORD will see my distress and repay me with good for the cursing I am receiving today."

• 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place — unless you repent.

• Matt 5:38-48• "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an

eye and a tooth for a tooth.' 39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 41 And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.

Love Your Enemies

"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

• Rom 12:17-21

• Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.

• 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord.

• 20 Therefore "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head."

• 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

• Rom 5:12• Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the

world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned

• Rom 5:18-19• 18 Therefore, as through one man's offense judgment

came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man's righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many will be made righteous.

• St. Augustine comments on the fall of Esau, that what he did was not particularly for the sake of

• a plate of stew, but because of his non-caring nature, saying: [It is to teach us that the fault does not lie in the creation of God, but rather in the stubborn rebellion and shameful lust;

• The first man did not earn death because of pig meat, but for a fruit (Gen. 3: 6); and it was not because of a meal of birds, but for a plate of stew, that Esau sell his birthright].

FIRSTBORN

• (a.) authority over the rest of the family• (b.) priesthood; • (c.) a double portion of the inheritance.• (d.) From him Christ will come

• Firstborn• The expression "first-born" is not always to be understood literally' it

is sometimes taken for the prime, most excellent, most distinguished of things.

• Thus "'Jesus Christ" is "the first-born of every creature, the first-begotten, or first--born from the dead;" begotten of the Father before any creature was produced; the first who rose from the dead by his own power

ESAU

• The Edenic promise of one who would "bruise" Satan was fixed in the family of Abraham (Gen 3:15); the order of promise was

• Abel, Seth, Shem, Abraham, Isaac, Esau. As the firstborn Esau was in the distinct line of the promise to Abraham: "and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed"

• Esau• he gained high repute by his skill and daring, which allied

him to the martial exercises of the Canaanites (Gen 25:27).

• He was, in fact, a thorough Bedawy, a "son of the desert" (so we may translate, man of the field),

• who delighted to roam free as the wind of heaven, and who was impatient of the restraints of civilized or settled life.

Isaac

• Gen 25:23• 23 And the LORD said to her:

"Two nations are in your womb,

Two peoples shall be separated from your body; One people shall be stronger than the other, And the older shall serve the younger.“

• Isaac's preference for Esau made him reluctant to fall in with the Divine arrangement

Page 20: Genesis Chapter 26. Facing problems 3 problems face humanity. Need view of others. Dealing with others. Egypt = Represent slavery.

Rebecca

• Rebekah and Jacob were prompted to bring about in their own way the fulfillment of God's promise, instead of believingly waiting to see when and how the Lord would do it .

• She Deceived her Husband

• She enticed her son to lie, cheat and mislead his father.

Page 21: Genesis Chapter 26. Facing problems 3 problems face humanity. Need view of others. Dealing with others. Egypt = Represent slavery.

• Heb 12:14-17• 14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without

which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.

PROFANE

• “Bebelos” is that which lacks all relationship or affinity to God

• Ungodly, unholy.

• PROFANE• To treat anything holy with disrespect. In the Bible, many things

could be profaned by disregarding God's laws about their correct use: the Sabbath (Isa 56:6), the Temple (Acts 24:6), the covenant (Mal 2:10), and God's name (Ex 19:22).

• The term profane is often applied to foolish or irresponsible people. Esau, who sold his birthright, was a "profane" person (Heb 12:16).

Page 24: Genesis Chapter 26. Facing problems 3 problems face humanity. Need view of others. Dealing with others. Egypt = Represent slavery.

• For profanity consists in this: • For the sensual gratification or amusement

of the moment to give up that which is spiritual and unseen; to be careless of that which is holy, so as to snatch the present enjoyment.

• In short, practically not to deem anything holy at all, if it stands in the way of present pleasure.

• Gen 27:34• 34 When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried

with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, "Bless me — me also, O my father!"

• Gen 27:38• 38 And Esau said to his father, "Have you only one

blessing, my father? Bless me — me also, O my father!" And Esau lifted up his voice and wept.

• Heb 12:17• 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted

to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears

Esau• Gen 25:23• 23 And the LORD said to her:• "Two nations are in your womb,• Two peoples shall be separated from your body; One people shall be

stronger than the other, And the older shall serve the younger."

• Gen 25:31• 31 But Jacob said, "Sell me your birthright as of this day." • Gen 25:34• Thus Esau despised his birthright.

• Gen 26:34-35• 34 When Esau was forty years old, he took as wives Judith the daughter of

Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35 And they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah.

• Rom 9:10-13• 10 And not only this, but when Rebecca also

had conceived by one man, even by our father Isaac 11(for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls), 12 it was said to her, "The older shall serve the younger." 13 As it is written, "Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated."

• Abraham died = 175 years old• Isaac was 75 years old• Esau and Jacob were 15 years old

• It had been expressly foretold in prophecy even before the children were born; and Esau had also afterwards proved himself wholly unfit to be the heir of the promise, first by his light-minded profanity, and next by his alliance with the Canaanites,

• Despite these clear indications, Isaac did lag behind, reluctant to follow the direction of God. In truth, he had thrown his natural affections as a makeweight into the scale.

2 Tim 2:20-22• But in a great house there are not only vessels

of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. 21 Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. 22 Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

• Even though she imagined herself to be carrying out the will of God.

• Such hours come to most of us, when it almost seems as if necessity obliged and holy wisdom prompted us to accomplish, in our own strength, that which, nevertheless, we should leave in God's hand.

Faith is the only true remedy

Faith, which leaves God to carry out His own purposes, content to trust Him absolutely, and to follow Him whithersoever He lead us.

And God's way is never through the thicket of human cunning and devices. "He that believeth shall not make haste;"
