probably killed by Indians at the massacre of 1694 or 1704, since his name does not appear in any record.

NOTES: John Meader, who may have been the son of John Meader of Fordington (c.1603 – p.1642 [E] and grandson of Thomas Meader probably born about 1625 in Fordington, Dorset, England and died about 1715 in Oyster River, New Hampshire. He apparently came to New England about 1647, just before the execution of King Charles I and the Interregnum in England. Two principal groups had formed there during the power struggle of the 1640s: The Royalists, loyal to the King, and the Cavaliers, or Roundheads, who opposed him. When Charles I fell, and was beheaded in 1649, many common citizens who had signed the Proclamation Returns of 1641/2 or otherwise professed their loyalty to the King fled to America. John Meader must at that time have been about 22 years of age. He was certainly a Protestant, since he had signed the Proclamation Return.

He served on a jury in 1659 – 1660 and on grand juries n 1661 – 1662, 1665, 1670, 1678 and 1693. According to the Dover Town Records, John Meader was taxed on July 21, 2657 and also in 1661 – 1667. He with others petitioned the General Court of Massachusetts in 1669 to make Oyster River a separate township. In 1685 he was one of a group of petitioners from Exeter, Hampton, Portsmouth and Dover who appointed Nathaniel Weare of Hampton as their agent to go to England to protest to the King (James II) about the arbitrary methods of Governor Cranfield. At a court session on October 19, 1709 to settle the ownership of some land disputed by Nathaniel Hill, presumably related to Valentine Hill, and a Stephenson, Joseph Meader [5] and John Meader [1], the latter then claiming the age of 80, both testified for Hill. Again, John Meader [2], claiming to be 82, testified on January 30, 1712 that Charles Adams had owned land at the mouth of the Oyster River about 1650, further evidence if any were needed that John Meader had been there at that time. John Meader married Abigail Tuttle in 1653. She was the daughter of John and Joan Antrobus Tuttle, born November 4, 1628 in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England and died in Durham, N.H. before April 4, 1674. The Tuttle family arrived in New England in 1653 in the ship Planter. In the Indian attack of 1694 [see the article, “The Oyster River Massacre”], apparently a number of homes, including that of John Meader, were consumed by fire. Accounts differ, however, as to the number of garrisons burned, and it is not even positive that John Meader lost his home at the time, although from the accounts that much is highly probable. If the Meader garrison was destroyed in 1604 it must have been immediately rebuilt, for one soldier was quartered there from July 18, 1694 until November 24, and other soldiers were stationed there from November 2, 1694 until March 6, 1696.

Spouse (3): Widow Agnes Clark Married: April 5, 1735 Died: 1737 She was the widow of Samuel Clark of Portsmouth. There were no children of this marriage. NOTES: John Meader, son of John Meader (c.1625 – c.1715) [1] and Abigail Tuttle, was probably born in 1660 [other sources give birth dates as early as 1654 and as early as 1667] at Oyster River, N.H. That he died in 1736 is presumed from his will, signed November 2 of that year. He was certainly a farmer, as was his father, and possibly a weaver as well. He occupied some of the paternal acres in Oyster River. He was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery, now the oldest military company in America. This celebrated corps was formed in 1637 during the Pequot war and modeled after the plan of a similar group in London. Composed of only the best citizens, it was meant more for home defense and for the training of young soldiers than for active service. As it was the special bulwark of the State, great pains were taken to maintain a high standard of discipline. From this it would appear that John Meader [2] was not a member of the Society of Friends. Honorable Artillery Company of Boston. John married first, Sarah Follett, born 1667, died before 1727. She was captured by Indians and taken to Canada with four of her children. She and three children were ransomed by John. One daughter remained and married a Frenchman.

NOTES: Nicholas left the parental roof at an early age. On March 18, 1734, he purchased 25 acres of the common and undivided lands for 8 shillings. Nicholas Follett, 'a mariner,' on July 1, 1710 conveyed lands to his 'cozen Nicholas Meader'. On April 14, 1737 he moved to Durham and settled on land owned by his grandfather. On August 17, 1738, 'Joseph Meader of Nantucket and Nicholas Meader of Durham entered a division of land, being part of the homestead of their father, John Meader, late of Durham, deceased.' It is signed by Nicholas and Joseph Meader. He also held a grant of land in Madbury, Strafford Co., New Hampshire. Will of Nicholas Meader: Samuel Meader (son) received 10 acres of land adjoining to his homestead land, being part of Nicholas' 40 acres on which his son John Meader lived; also 6 acres of land more lying on the westerly side of Lamper-Eel River. John Meader (son) received free and full use and improvement of 30 acres of land where he John currently lives, the produce of Nicholas' thatch bed, and also the produce of the one half of Nicholas' salt marsh lying below the trench. Daniel Meader (son) received the produce of all Nicholas' land from the elm tree to the marsh point, one half of the feed of the pasture land, use of 12 acres of woodland at wheelwright's Pond, to support his fire. David Meader (son) received Nicholas' dwelling house and barn and the land upon which the dwelling house stands, one half the pasture land, a piece of mowing land beginning at a certain elm tree (the bound between Nicholas and his brother Joseph's land) . . . all Nicholas' thatch bed, salt marsh, one half of pasture land, 13 acres of land lying at Wheelwright's Pond, all household goods, beds and bedding and all farming tackling and utensils [David's mother may use it during her lifetime as Nicholas' widow]. Thomas Meader (grandson - son of John) received 30 acres of land, thatch bed, one half of the salt marsh - if Thomas does not survive his father, then items are given to Nicholas' grandson, Thomas Meader (son of John). Mark Meader (grandson - son of Daniel) received land, one half of pasture land, 12 acres of woodland lying at Wheelwright's Pond. Mark and his father shall make and keep in good repair the partition fence between the mowing land and the pasture land between Nicholas' and his brother Joseph's land. Lydia Roberts (granddaughter) received 400 pounds, old tenor. NOTES: According to the unpublished information from John Meader of Piscataqua, His Ancestors and Descendants, in 1798, they moved from Dover to Lincoln, Vermont, where they were living at the 1800 Census. In 1810, they lived in Monkton and they also apparently at some time lived in Ferrisburg. By 1830, they had moved to the Quaker settlement at Farnham, Quebec, Canada. In 1838, they went to the Elkhart, Indiana area where they were recorded in 1840. Joel must have died before the 1850 Census as Rebecca is living with their son David which is the last census that she appears on. Friends records of Western Vermont show that they also lived in Iowa.

Notes: [Anna Meader] was born in Vermont, in the year 1784, and the latter of whom [William Hill] was born in Rhode Island, in 1792, both having been representatives of families that were founded in New England in the early colonial period of our national history. William Hill was reared and educated in the old Green Mountain State and during the course of a long and active career he was known not only as a business man of marked ability but also as a loyal and liberal citizen of exceptional intellectuality. As a young man he went to the Province of Quebec, Canada, and about the year 1832 he established his residence in St. Lawrence County, New York, where he became a citizen of prominence and influence and where he passed the residue of his long and useful life, his death having there occurred in 1878. William Hill took a deep interest in public affairs and was aligned with the old Whig party until the campaign of 1848, when he espoused the cause of the free soil party, which nominated Martin Van Buren for the presidency of the United States. In the next national campaign, that of 1852, the free soil party virtually changed its title to the free democracy, and as a representative of the latter Mr. Hill was a delegate to the convention that nominated John P. Hale, of New Hampshire, for the presidency. He united with the republican party at the time of its organization and was a delegate to its first national convention, that of 1856, when Gen. John C. Fremont was made its standard-bearer as nominee for the presidency. He attended also, though not as a delegate, the republican national convention of 1860, in Chicago, where Abraham Lincoln was made the presidential nominee. It is worthy of note in this connection that his son, Rufus J., immediate subject of this review, accompanied him to this historic convention. William Hill had the further distinction of having served as a soldier in the war of 1812. As a young man he enlisted as a member of a Vermont volunteer regiment, and with the same he participated in the Battle of Plattsburg, one of the memorable engagements incidental to the second conflict with England. The wife of William Hill long survived and continued to maintain her home in St. Lawrence County, New York, until she too was summoned to the life eternal, in 1892, at the remarkable age of 100 years. Note: He was a twin to Rhuhama (Rua) Hill who married Angus McMillian. Rufus J. Hill acquired his early education in the schools of his native county and in 1856, when eighteen years of age, he went to Minnesota, where he gained a due quota of pioneer experience as a farm employee, in the meanwhile continuing to attend school during the winters. In consonance with his ambitious purpose he finally entered the law department of the celebrated University of Michigan, at Ann Arbor, in which he was graduated as a member of the class of 1865 and from which he received the degree of Bachelor of Laws. For eighteen months thereafter he was engaged in the practice of his profession at Ripon, Wisconsin, and he then, in 1867, came to Kansas and numbered himself among the pioneers of Linn County. In the following year he removed to Fort Scott and became one of the early members of the bar of Bourbon County, where he was associated with W. C. Webb and Gen. Charles W. Blair in the general practice of law until 1871. In the winter of the year last mentioned Mr. Hill initiated the erection of the house that was to constitute his place of residence in Independence, and in the spring of 1872 he here took up his abode. He thus became one of the pioneers of Independence and one of the prominent and influential representatives of his profession in Montgomery County. He built up and long controlled a substantial and important general law practice and he is now one of the most venerable members of the bar of this section of the state. Though he continues to give more or less attention to the incidental activities of his profession he has been virtually retired from active practice since 1911. He has long been known as a strong trial lawyer and as one specially well fortified as a counselor, his being a broad and accurate knowledge of jurisprudence, as he continued a close student of the law during the many years of his active practice. In 1874 Mr. Hill was retained to look after the legal interests of the Osage Indians of this section, and in this capacity he continued his effective services for the government until the election of President Cleveland in 1884. In 1868 he had been present at the time when the Dunn Creek treaty was effected between the government and the Osage Indians, and this led to his being later engaged in looking after the tribal affairs of the Osage Indians, with a number of the leaders of which tribe he had become acquainted at the treaty mentioned. He continued to be associated with the legal affairs of the Indians until 1911, with secure place in the confidence and respect of the tribe, and since that time he has been practically retired from active professional work. He is well known throughout this section of Kansas and is familiarly designated as Judge Hill. Mr. Hill has been a resourceful force in connection with political affairs in Kansas, is a stalwart advocate of the principles for which the republican party ever has stood sponsor in a basic way and his first presidential vote was cast for Abraham Lincoln. He formerly maintained active affiliation with Fortitude Lodge, No. 107, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, at Independence, and also with the local lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He is still in active affiliation with the local organizations of the Modern Woodmen of America and the Woodmen of the World, both he and his wife being zealous members of the Presbyterian Church and being numbered among the best known

and most honored pioneer citizens of the vigorous and prosperous little city that has represented their home for more than forty years and in which their circle of friends is coincident with that of their acquaintances. At Ripon, Wisconsin, on the 27th of June, 1867, was solemnized the marriage of Mr. Hill to Miss Annie Hargrave, daughter of William and Emma (Redfern) Hargrave, who were sterling pioneers of that state. Mr. Hargrave was born in Scotland and was a lad of fourteen years at the time of the family removal to the Province of Quebec, Canada, where he was reared to maturity and where his marriage was solemnized. He was identified with mercantile business in the City of Quebec for a number of years and finally removed with his family to the City of Toronto, where his daughter, Annie, wife of the subject of this review, was born. In reference to the ancestry of Mr. Hill it may further be stated that his paternal grandfather, a native of the southern part of England, was sent to the West Indies in the employ of the British government, and at the time of the American Revolution he had started for his old home in England, but the vessel on which he had embarked was captured by the Americans and he was taken to Providence, Rhode Island. He remained loyal to his king but after the close of the Revolution he established his home in Vermont, his death having occurred at Rutland, that state. He was a man of superior education and became a successful teacher in the schools of the old Green Mountain commonwealth. In conclusion is given a brief record concerning the children of Mr. and Mrs. Hill: Annie is the widow of William Whiteman, who was employed as a telegraph operator in the service of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, and she now remains with her venerable parents in their pleasant home in Independence; William died at the age of ten months; Emma is the wife of Harry Brown and their attractive home at Independence was presented to them by Mr. Hill; and Ellen died at the age of seven years. According to the unpublished information from John Meader of Piscataqua, His Ancestors and Descendants, they were married “out of Meeting” to Daniel Nichols. She moved from Ferrisburg to Peru, New York, which reported favorably in 1836. A certificate was issued to Peru by Ferrisburg, December 28, 1836. The Nichols’ family sold the family farm in Peru, New York and moved to Vermont in 1876. From a review of the Federal Census records, it would appear that Rhuhama had no children of her own, but quite possibly raised those of her husband. In the 1880, Bridgeport, Addison, Vermont Federal Census, she was listed as a “step-mother”, age 76, living in the household of Henry and Sarah Nichols. According to James E. Hazard’s Index to the Records of New York Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, we find evidence of the love between these two people. On November 11, 1842, Daniel Nichols of Peru, New York became a member of the Monthly Meeting as a “convinced” Friend and was accepted as a member by request. “The pictures we have of my mother’s grandparents show, her grandmother but her step-grandmother, a very strict Quaker lady. Once when her family called on her grandparents, who lived near them, on a Sunday, my Aunt Gertrude told me, the lady brought the old-fashioned churn to my grandfather, request him to finish the churning, for 1 (1) Mary F. Nichols, born about March 1824 and died June 30, 1846, age 22 years 3 months. She married Erastus Thew and had one daughter, Helen, who lived beyond infancy. Helen is mentioned in Daniel Nichols’ will. Mr. Thew remarried at least three more times and lived in Crawford County, Iowa. (2) John D. Nichols, born about 1828, married Maria and had five children. (3) Henry Nichols, born about 1830, married Sarah and had five children. He was still living for the 1900 Federal Census

Adeline Ione Meader COON of Longmont, CO, passed away on March 18, 2010, at the age of 95. She was born Oct. 29, 1914, in Canfield, CO, the fifth of eight children of David Arthur Meader and Lucia Sutherland Jones. There were four boys and four girls in the family. In the late 1930s, she moved to Southern California, where she met Paul Howard Coon of Ashtabula County, Ohio. They were married in Las Vegas, NV, on June 14, 1941. They had two children there before moving to San Jose, Calif., where they lived and raised their children. She lost her husband of 49 years in December 1990. In 1996, Addie decided to sell her home of 46 years and move back home to Longmont, where she was raised. She stayed there for three years before deciding to move to Yreka, Calif., to be near her daughter, grandson and great-grandson. Not liking Yreka, she again decided to move back home, where she lived until her death. Adeline is survived by her daughter, Carol Harrison of Montague, Calif.; grandson Dale Gossett and his wife Lynda of Salt Lake City, and Dales son Kyowa of Kansas; son Lyle and daughter-in-law Candyce Coon of Hot Springs, Arkansas; and Lyles son Brian of Athens, Greece. She also is survived by her youngest sister, Alice Meader Hill of Longmont, plus numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her parents; and four brothers and two sisters: Bill, Orlen, Orville, Genevieve, Evelyn and David. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 27, at 10:00 a.m. at Hygiene Methodist Church, 7542 Hygiene Road, Longmont, Colo. The Rev. Merlene Varner will be officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to Hospice Care, c/o Carroll-Lewellen Funeral & Cremation Services. Notes: The following is taken from a Pierce genealogy:

The Meader family arrived at the end of the railroad in Rapid City during a howling blizzard in March, 1894. Their destination was their homestead at Elm Spring, where they were to arrive some blizzard-filled days later. Charles Meader and the two oldest boys, Tene and Alex, had ridden in the stock train with the horses and cows and other belongings, and arrived ahead of the rest of the family. Martha Meader had the girls with her: Allie, Una, Libbie and Ida, the little crippled girl. The Charles Raybourne family – Alice Raybourne was Martha’s sister – came on the same train for the same reason. The Raybourne homestead bounded the Meader place on the west. Family tragedy caused by ill health was the primary reason that the Meaders left a very comfortable home twenty miles north of Des Moines to pioneer a homestead in Meade County, South Dakota. The Meader family was large; two children passed away in Iowa and five made the trip West with their parents. The children born in Elm Springs were Myrtle, Blake, Hazel and Floyd.

He is listed in the 1850 Census as then in Washington Township, Henry County, Ohio. The Dent, Minnesota Meader family reports he moved from there to Mitchellville, Iowa in 1854, where he is listed in the 1856 Iowa Census. In the 1870 Census he was living with his daughter Emma with the family of A.J. Curtis in Polk County. He was buried in the United Brethren Cemetery, Madrid. Boone, Iowa.

Meader (1818-1900) [1018] and Sarah Scribner, was born September 26, 1845 in Henry Co., Ohio and died February 18, 1894 in Polk Co., Iowa. December 13, 1862 in Polk Co. she married James McClay, born August 6, 1829 in Milton, Indiana the son of Richard McClay of Ireland and Sarah Young. The McClays came to Iowa in the same wagon train as the Samuel Meaders in 1854 from Milton. The Meaders left Ohio after Harlan’s birth and may have lived in Milton for a while. The James McClays were unwilling hosts to the Jesse James gang in 1878. The gang of eight men rode into the yard and took over the kitchen of the McClay home. They slept on the kitchen floor with their guns at their sides while the McClay family stayed very quietly in the other part of the small farm home. Martha McClay had baked bread and that was all they asked in the way of food – her baked bread and coffee. The next morning before dawn they were up and on their horses and were gone. James’ brother, William, and sister, Nancy, lived by his family. The 1870 Federal Census lists Martha’s brother, Ezra, living with the family.

Was born in Erie County, New York, May 24, 1932 and made it his home until 1839, when, with her parents, he moved to Menard County, Illinois. There resided until iy4, when he came to this State and settled on his present homestead of 290 acres, all of which is under cultivation. He married January 17, 1860, to Miss M.R. Virgin, of Knox County, Ohio. They have two children: James W. and George B. Mr. D. has held important township offices and has also figured conspicuously in state and county elections. The Davis family moved to Des Moines where James was an insurance agent. According to the Federal Census, the family had four children born and three who lived. Any information about the deceased child is unknown except that it would have been before the 1900 Federal Census.

In 1870, according to the Census, the young couple were living at the home of her father, John S. Young, in Polk County. An obituary of John Meader reads in part:

In 1854 he moved to Apple Grove, Polk County, Iowa. He was married in 1869 and lived near Mitchellville, Iowa for two years. Their son Henry was born there. They moved to a homestead in Republic County, Kansas and there their son Ellis was born in the sod house on the claim. A scourge of grasshoppers which for two years destroyed their crops compelled him to return to Iowa, and for three years they lived in the old neighborhood. Here May was born in 1876. They then returned to Bradford, Kansas and lived there until 1894. Here Jessie, Earl and Lloyd were born. They then returned to Mitchellville and made their home there until 1909. In the spring of the year they moved to Thompson, Iowa. They moved to Dent, MN in 1914 and for a little more than a year they lived on a farm near Star Lake. After his wife’s death he lived with his son Henry.

After his wife’s death Orren Meader lived with his daughter, Florence.

Thief River Falls Times, Minnesota, November 1, 2003 William Meader, 79 Karlstad – William Meader, 79, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 15, at 2 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church at Karlstad. Military honors were accorded by Karlstad American Legion Post 445. Interment was in Eidsvold Cemetery in Halma with Collins Funeral Home of Karlstad in charge of the arrangements. William Merrian Meader was born on May 19, 1921 at Baldwin, N.D., the son of Albert and Sophie (Golby) Meader. As a child, he moved with his family to Williams and alter to Karlstad where he attended school. Bill served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1945. On September 22, 1945, he was united in marriage to Betty Hanson at Lancaster. The couple lived in Lancaster and Strandquist prior to moving to Karlstad where they had since resided. Bill worked at the American Crystal Sugar Plant at Drayton, N.D. for eight years and for Ernest Carlson farms at Karlstad for 13 years in additional to working for several other area farmers. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church of Karlstad and Karlstad American Legal Post 445.

Bill is survived by his wife, Betty, two sons, Richard of St. Paul and William Jr. (Myrna) of Karlstad; two daughters, Janet (John) Larsen of Embarrass and Darlene Amundson of Karlstad; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Randy and one in infancy; three daughters, Kathleen, Sharon and one in infancy; a grandson Harlan “Pete”, a brother, Clarence; and two sons-in-law, Duane and Greg.
