The third edition of reGeneration, an exhibition project launched in 2005, distinguishes itself with a multidisciplinary approach. Photography, videos, installations, multimedia works or photobooks, the 50 emerging artists selected from 18 different countries reveal the new perspectives for photography.

From May 28 to August 23, 2015, the Musée de l’Elysée will celebrate its 30th anniversary with the third edition of reGeneration, an exhibition and publication project devoted to the international emerging photographic scene.

This edition follows the success of the two prior editions -produced in 2005 and 2010- which were presented on tour at over thirty institutions and international festivals worldwide such as the Aperture Foundation (New York), Les Rencontres d’Arles (France) and the Caochangdi Photo Spring Festival (China), attracting over 300’000 visitors.

Following the model of the two previous editions, 350 art schoolsand centres for artistic training around the world were contacted tosend the work of their 5 most promising students. While the initialproject aimed to present the photographers of tomorrow, the 2015edition distinguishes itself with a multidisciplinary approach: thecompetition was open to any works using photography, inclusiveof different techniques and media such as photographic prints, videos, installations, multimedia works, and photobooks.

The exhibition is divided into three thematic sections: documentary subjects, new expressions and the question of memory and the dematerialization of the image. The portfolios received accorded the Musée de l’Elysée a broad vision of the interests and practices of the emerging artistic scene. The final selection is made up of 50 projects, judged most pertinent on a visual and theoretical basis to represent the different perspectives for photography today. The selected emerging artists come from differents countries: India, Poland, Czech Republic, Cambodia or New Zealand, let alone Switzerland, the United States and the United Kingdom.

The exhibition is organized by Anne Lacoste (curator) assisted by Lydia Dorner and Emilie Delcambre. The exhibition will tour worldwide starting in 2016. A bilingual publication will be published by the Musée de l’Elysée for the occasion.

The themes and artists of reGeneration3

Documentary subjectsDocumentary photography remains one of the primary fields ofresearch and exploration for emerging artists. Proposing a "transcription of reality" while respecting the chosen subject, the documentary tradition manifests in a number of ways: purelydescriptive works, works employing a typological methodology, narrative, fictional, performance based and installation works —while always necessarily taking into account the subjectivityof the creator.

The following artists are included in this section of the show: Laurence Rasti (CH, 1990, ECAL), Jennifer Thoreson (USA, 1979, Université du Nouveau Mexique, Albuquerque), Juno Calypso (UK, 1989, London College of Communication), Sinan Tuncay (TR, 1986, School of Visual Arts, New York), Corinne Silva (UK, 1976, London College of Communication), Rachel Boillot (USA, 1987, Duke University), Jan Brykczynski (PL, 1979, Institut de photographie créative, Opava), Nobukho Nqaba (Afrique du Sud, 1992, Michaelis School of Fine art, Le Cap), Giacomo Bianchetti (CH, 1982, CEPV - Ecole de photographie de Vevey), Jonna Kina (FI, 1984, KUVA - Académie des Beaux-Arts d’Helsinki), Karel Koplimets (EE, 1986, Académie des Beaux-Arts d’Estonie, Tallin), Artur Gutowski (PL, 1990, Ecole nationale supérieure de cinéma, télévision et théâtre, Lodz), Rachel Cox (USA, 1984, Université du Nouveau Mexique), Ulrike Schmitz (ALL, 1975, Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie, Berlin), Gaia Squarci (IT, 1988, ICP - International Center of Photography, New York), Constance et Philippine Roux (FR, 1991 et 1986, ESA - Ecole supérieure des arts de l’image, Bruxelles et Ecole Normale supérieure de Cachan), Martyna Pawlak (FR/PL, 1988, Ecole nationale supérieure Louis-Lumière, Noisy-le-Grand), Emily MacInnes (RU, 1989, Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham), Paul Samuels (Afrique du Sud, 1989, The Wits School of Arts, Johannesburg).

New expressionsArtists are also finding inspiration in the history of the medium andthe different fields in which it is employed (the reproduction of artobject s, the different applications of photography in the humanitiesand journalism) as inspiration to create new, original artworks.Their curiosity extends also to the technical history of the medium(light and color) resulting in conceptual and formal works. Otherpoetic and even theatrical works from the selection evolve fromthe history of art or literature.

Memory and the dematerialization of the imageEmerging artists are actively questioning the link betweenphotography and memory, from in-house production of images toarchival prints. These often multimedia artworks reveal the reflective character of the photographic image using anonymousphotographs, staged or more intimate works which bring to light theparadoxical and unstable nature of the medium.

reGeneration3 - the bookThe format of the book devoted to reGeneration3 takes the ever-growing popularity of the photography book into account. Designed by graphic artists from the SUPERO studios and co-produced by Editions Skira, the book testifies to the museum’s interest in art books and to its commitment to giving priority to the image.

The texts can be found at the end of the book. They include a postface by Tatyana Franck, the presentation of this new edition by Anne Lacoste, and biographical and descriptive notes concerning the works of the 50 artists chosen, written by Lydia Dorner, Emilie Delcambre and Saida Bondini.

A book enhanced by augmented reality In that the exhibition includes a large number of installations and multimedia projects, the Musée de l’Elysée has taken innovative steps and made augmented reality an integral part of the book.

The reader can access additional content using a free application available in iOS and Android for smartphones and touch pads. This new and innovative approach is yet another manifestation of the museum’s current dynamic that aims at integrating new technologies into the museum experience. By making the moving image part of the printed page, the visitor can see (and see again!) the exhibition from a new angle.

In 2015, the Musée de l’Elysée is celebrating its 30th anniversary and the Paléo Festival Nyon its 40th edition. The two French-speaking Swiss institutions are joining forces to mount a unique photographic project, piloted by the Musée de l’Elysée. Five photographers have been given by the museum carte blancheto take a new look at the festival. Their work, made during the 2014 edition of the festival, will be exhibited from July 20 to 26, 2015 at Paléo in a space designed specifically for the occasion.Claude Baechtold, Olivier Christinat, Anne Golaz, Nicolas Haeni and Elisa Larvego contribute their personal and sometimes surprising views of the festival. Between immersion and enquiry, the photographers go beyond the confines of mere reporting in order to offer us a singular point of view from the festival’swings, one that totally expresses the energy inherent in the event. The Paléo Festival Nyon has become a landmark European music festival. For its 40th edition, it proposes an entire week packed full of festivities: www.paleo.ch.

The memory of images: the iconographiccollection of the Canton de VaudFrom September 18, 2015 to January 3, 2016

Founded in 1896 by the pastor Paul-Louis Vionnet (1830-1914), the iconographic collection of the Canton of Vaud became part of the Musée de l’Elysée’s collections in the 1980s. It now contains hundreds of thousands of images covering the history of the medium. This collection chronicles the beginnings of documentary photography applied to the inventory of local heritage and the history of the Canton of Vaud. This presentation of the iconographic collection, produced in conjunction with Silvio Corsini and Olivier Lugon, is part of the policy to enhance the collection between the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne and the Musée de l’Elysée. It will be accompanied by a publication and will be the subject of an international symposium that will take place on November 5-6, 2015, devoted to museums and collections of visual and sound documents from the turn of the 20th century, organized by the universities of Lausanne and Geneva. This exhibition is also the subject of a first book for children published by the Musée de l’Elysée.

The exhibition is made possible thanks to the support of the Fondation Leenaards and Loterie Romande.

Pôle muséal

As of 2018-2022, the city of Lausanne and the Canton of Vaud will see three of their emblematic cultural institutions together on the one and the same site. The Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts and the Musée de l’Elysée will take up their new residences at just a stone’s throw from the train station, the site of the former locomotive workshops of the Swiss Federal Railways. The Pôle muséal project, on a scale never before seen in Switzerland, is sponsored by the Canton of Vaud, the city of Lausanne and the Swiss Federal Railways, and intends to make Lausanne a city focused on culture through innovation. Two major steps of the project will take place in 2015.

Objectif gare, an artistic journey to the Pôle muséalFrom June 5 to 14, 2015

In view of their future unification, the three institutions are proposing the event, Objectif gare. For ten days, the partners of the future Pôle muséal will make an artistic journey together with their visitors along a trail that symbolizes their shared view of the future. Each of the trails proposed will lead to the future site of the Pôle muséal. Exhibitions, interventions and installations created especially for the occasion by local as well as internationally renowned cultural actors and artists will take place throughout the city.

The architecture competition in January

A call for applications was launched in January 2015 for the architecture competition linked to the second phase of the Pôle muséal. Some 149 architectural firms expressed their interest in designing the future homes of the MUDAC and the Musée de l’Elysée. After examination, the jury chose 21 applications presented by teams composed of firms from nine different countries.

In May, technical specifications were given to the 21 architects for the purpose of developing a common program for the institutions within the perimeter concerned by the Pôle muséal. The jury will meet in the fall and the results of the competition will be announced in October 2015.
