Plus: Urban Heat Island Effect will be measured during the tour
On May 1st, City Tech students will lead a walking tour for the general public and the college community that will explore urban environmental challenges and sustainable solutions currently being implemented in Dumbo and Downtown Brooklyn. Developed by students in fi ve different disciplines -- Chemistry, English, Communication Design, Hospitality Management, and Physics -- the tour will offer a range of perspectives on environmental concerns. Issues considered will include global warming, the tendency for urban areas to be warmer than outlying regions (the “Urban Heat Island Effect”), garbage disposal, and power generation. Solutions will include recycling and composting, bio-fuels, green building techniques, absorption of CO2 by trees, and local food consumption.
Please meet us between 12:15 and 12:30 p.m. at thesoutheast corner of Jay Street and Tillary Street. The walk will proceed down Jay Street into DUMBO and the waterfront, then follow Washington Street up to Cadman Plaza East to the Borough Hall Green Market, and conclude at City Tech. From 2 to 2:30 p.m., Prof. Blake will present on green roofs and the Urban Heat Island Effect. Refreshments will be served.
