On June 15, 1866, General Smith advisedGeneral U. S. B. Hood, having been appointedGeneral, with temporary rank and command,and having been relieved from duty as Commander of the Army of Tennessee, and not having been reappointed to any other commandappropriate to the rank of General, he has lostthe rank of General, and therefore cannot beconfirmed as such." General Hood died in NewOrleans, La., August 30, 1879.
