PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Have you been in the San Antonio airport and

seen men and women dressed in battle fatigues, returning from a tour of duty in Iraq or Afghanistan? If so, you have probably witnessed sounds of cheers, enthusiastic clapping, and greeting signs welcoming them home. I recently flew to Dallas on American Airlines and, prior to take-off, the pilot made an announcement that there were service men and women on our flight. He continued to express his thanks and gratitude for their sacrifice and service, which was

followed by clapping from everyone on board. These types of things always give me a lump in my throat and a swelling pride that wants to burst right out of my chest!

Patriotism is a wonderful feeling of love and loyalty for our country and its values. I was lucky enough to learn these values from my dad, who as a young man was honored to serve in the United States Coast Guard. By example, my dad taught me the importance of becoming a citizen of character, courage, and integrity, and what it means to be free.

As a young girl, I watched and learned as my dad stood respectfully, with hand over heart, when the national anthem was sung or played. I watched and learned as he read the newspaper each day to stay informed about what was happening in our community, the state, the nation and the world. Dad has probably watched every WWII movie or documentary ever made, and many of these we watched together. Through this bonding time he taught me the historical significance of why these men were fighting for freedom and democracy. As I grew older, my dad talked to me about the privilege of becoming an informed citizen and voting in an election. He also encouraged me to make my opinions known to my elected leaders. I respect my dad, and appreciate the beliefs he instilled in me regarding our country and our duties as responsible citizens. To this day, he continues to serve as my patriotic role model.

I share this story with you because our September 11th meeting will be a very special celebration honoring our military, American patriotism, and good citizenship. This is a meeting I have been looking forward to all year. We are fortunate to have Rear Admiral John W. Townes, III, U.S. Navy (retired), speak to us on "Patriotism and Service – the next Greatest Generation.” Our philanthropy committee has also invited soldiers from Ft. Sam, along with their spouses, as our guests; providing your firm an opportunity to be a good corporate citizen by sponsoring a meal for one of our military guests.

Also on the agenda for September is a brief business meeting for the election of the 2008-2009 Chapter Board of Directors. The slate of officers supporting incoming President, Vicki Chapman (SWBC), is: Vice President, Letty Villarreal (Silver Eagle Distributors, LP); Secretary, Diane Solarczyk (Bitterblue, Inc.); Treasurer, Valerie Manns (Project Control); Sergeant-at-Arms, Patty Wilkins (SSFCU); Membership Director, Debbie Saldana (HEB); Program Director, Damita Pape (University of the Incarnate Word); Publication Director, Aida Belmares (St. Mary’s University); Ways & Means Director, Cynthia Rangel (San Antonio Employers’ Health Alliance); and Director-at-Large, Monica Garza (Batchelor Cadillac Saab Hummer). The installation of this Board will take place at the October 16th meeting. The 2007-08 Board year is winding down, and we are going out with a patriotic bang! I hope you will join the Board in this exciting tribute to our red, white and blue, on September 11, 2008 at the La Quinta Inn & Suites Conference Center. It will be a great time to make a patriotic connection and learn how to be a better citizen in our community.

LEADERSHIP SAN ANTONIO CLASS 34 ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS Leadership San Antonio (LSA) is a selective year-long program designed to provide existing and emerging leaders exposure to the nature and inner workings of San Antonio. Applications for the 2009 class are available at www.sachamber.org or www.sahcc.org and are being accepted through October 1, 2008. Applicants must show a sincere commitment, be motivated and interested in the community and have the desire to increase their service to the San Antonio area in key leadership positions. Over 1,000 San Antonians have completed LSA. Graduates include Secretary of State Hope Andrade, Congressman Charlie Gonzalez, Judge Nelson Wolff, Frost Bank CEO Dick Evans and many other prominent business and community leaders. Over thirty years after its formation, LSA’s primary goal continues to focus on a strong commitment to community service. LSA Class 34 will begin in January 2009.
