General Information

The School Based Assessment (SBA) is an INTEGRAL part of the student assessment in the course covered by the Geography syllabus.

The Report should be NO MORE than 1000 words in length.

In cases where the word limit is exceeded by more than 150 words, there will be a 10% penalty deduction in the marks

Students who duplicate or allow the duplication of work submitted in the same or previous years, will be PENALIZED.

Students can earn a maximum of 40 marks, which constitutes 20% of the total examination. Marks are allocated to each profile dimension as follows:

- Practical Skills (PS): 10 marks

- Knowledge and Comprehension (KC): 10 marks

- Use of Knowledge (UK): 20 marks

Table of Contents: must include in the study and properly presented with correct page numbers.

Introduction:

Aim of Study: at least ONE aim clearly stated as a direct or implicit question

Example: The aim of this/the SBA is.........

Location of Study: At least TWO sketch maps, ONE of the site and ONE showing its location in relation to other features (roads, rivers, etc.). BOTH maps must be accurately drawn and properly labelled.

ALL MAPS MUST BE DRAWN, NOT COPIED or DRAWN ELECTRONICALLY.

All maps are to be drawn on blank white ‘Letter’ paper. NOT ON FOLDER PAGE.

Try to be as accurate as possible.

All maps must first be drawn in pencil then outlined in pen after. NO PENCIL WORK!

Try to center your drawing on the page.

Use colour pencils for all symbols and features. DO DON’T USE COLOURED PENS.

Try to be NEAT and TIDY!

All maps must:

1. Have a BORDER (IN PEN)

2. Have a TITLE (ON TOP THE BORDER & CENTRED)

3. Have a NORTH DIRECTIONAL ARROW (PLACED TO THE RIGHT OF THE MAP)

4. Have a SCALE (NB. The scale for sketch maps is ‘NOT DRAWN TO SCALE’) Scale must be placed at the bottom of the map, inside the border)

5. Have a KEY, using the convention symbols in Chapter 5 of your Tropical Maps text.

Methodology: A clear statement on HOW data were collected and an example of the instrument used or a brief outline of how observations were made and tests done. A clear statement on WHEN the data were collected. A clear statement on WHERE the data were collected.

Your Methodology MUST be written in SEQUENTIAL ORDER from start of the field trip to the end, preferably in a paragraph format.

You are ONLY to state when, where and how you obtain your information for the purpose of achieving the aim of the project. YOU ARE NOT TO INCLUDE ANY OBSERVATIONS MADE DURING THE TRIP OR MAKE ANY CONCLUSIONS.

Must be written in Past Tense and must “flow’!

Presentation of Data: Illustrations- A variety, for example, graphs, tables, labelled photographs. At least THREE examples should be included. MUST be accurate, relevant, neat, clearly labelled and titled

**The teacher is required to impose a penalty, deduction of 1 mark, in cases where less than three example are used and where illustrations are copied from secondary sources.

All illustrations MUST BE APPROPRIATE.

Illustrations MUST have a Reference #, Title, Border, Well Labeled, etc…..

Example: Figure 1 is a pie chart showing the proportion of students living in various areas of Trinidad. It is noted that the majority of students live in the North/West areas of the country (50%) while the least live in South (5%). Based on this it…………………….

Quality of Data: Comprehensive and very accurate data

Date must also be APPROPRIATE & RELEVANT, MOSTLY consisting of PRIMARY DATA!!

Analysis and Discussion: Very well organised, coherent, points well-developed, well-sequenced and supported by comprehensive data (must show evidence of field work).

Also, the illustrations must be well integrated with the text and content.

Based on WHAT the information obtained indicates, what can you say about the problem, issue?

Conclusion: Must be related to the purpose of the study and provides a succinct summary consistent with the data obtained.

NO NEW INFORMATION MUST BE INTRODUCED IN THE CONCLUSION

SUMMARISE ALL DISCUSSED & ANALYSED and STATE if the AIM was ACHIEVED!

Communication of Data: No grammatical errors or flaws and extensive use of appropriate geographical terms.

Bibliography: Alphabetical order by AUTHOR with TITLE, PUBLISHER, PLACE and COPYRIGHT YEAR for at LEAST THREE, relevant and UP-TO-DATE references

answering the question?

You have a question/problem, you know exactly how you are going to achieve

answering the question and you know how you will be getting your data/

info.

data/info show? Tabulate the data Analyse the data

Any trends? Patterns? etc What does that mean?

What can you conclude about the title/aim of the SBA???.....have you answered the question?

To identify and discuss how wave processes lead to the formation of coastal features at Las Cuevas Bay, Trinidad, West Indies.

Two maps and a sketch diagram should be done: Map 1: A Map of Trinidad showing the following- 1. Mountain Ranges 2. Counties (boundaries and names) 3. Islands off the North West of Trinidad 4. Port of Spain, San Fernando, 5. The main highways (Churchill Roosevelt, Uriah Butler, Beetham,

Eastern Main Road) 6. One line of latitude and longitude, accurately labelled (must

cross the land) 7. Gulf of Paria, Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Columbus Channel 8. Caroni Swamp, Caroni River, Nariva Swamp 9. Las Cuevas Bay 10. Draw a box around the selected ‘Bay/Beach’ and surroundings

and label it ‘Subject of Map 2’

All final maps (Border and Map Outlines) must be in PEN!

Describe everything that you did to obtain your information.

You must say HOW the data was collected, state WHEN the field trip was done and state WHERE the field trip was carried out.

How do you intend to collect and analyse the data? What are you going to do? Any tests/experiments? Also include where and when you are going to collect the data.

You must use at least THREE types of illustrations (photos, line graphs, pie charts, tables, etc.) in you SBA.

All diagrams must be neatly drawn, have a border, titled and labelled. It should be NUMBERED and REFERRED to in the written account.

How are you going to present the data? Table, graph, pie chart, pictures.

The written account describes the findings.

Trends can be identified and accounted for.

Properly integrate charts, photos and diagrams.

Title each diagram and briefly describe what the diagram or chart shows then tie it into the discussion.

Definitions can be included.

How are you going to analyse the data? What are you going to discuss to accomplish the aim?

A summary of your study.

Recommendations can be done here.

NO NEW INFORMATION!

What conclusions can be made? Did you achieve your aim? Summarise the information discussed. Any limitations?
