Brother Knights:

I myself, I don’t care if our council ever gets another award

or recognition.

Annual Star Awards, though nice to receive, are not why we

exist as a council. Instead, we are here to support our parish and

community. And we are here to help each other as brothers in

Christ. In other words, we the council are not about ourselves, but

about helping others through charitable works.

Let’s look at what makes up a Star award, why I will no

longer push our council to obtain it, and what we should concen-

trate on doing instead.

Columbian Award or Service Pro-

grams: Charitable or program work is why

we exist as a council. We have accomplished

a lot in previous years helping others

through our activities, such as food for fami-

lies, coats for kids, tootsie roll drives, just to

mention a few.

Additionally, we are very active in our

parish and community, by ushering, lectur-

ing, greeting, Eucharist ministy, etc. Also

many of us are well known in our communi-

ty for college scholarships, belonging to oth-

er non-profit organizations and holding ac-

tivities open to the community such as the

upcoming Halloween Haunted House. We

should continue these efforts and more.

However, we need to figure out how to

measure our work so that it fits the need of

our parish and our community, not to get

points for an award. Additionally, we

should do fewer activities but get more done

in meeting charitable needs.

Some of you have told me we have too

many activities each month, and those of us

active in participating are getting burned

out. I am listening, and lately, I have seen

this for myself. Starting today and going

“Watch out for the teachers of the law. They

like to walk around in flowing robes and be

greeted in the marketplaces and have the

most important seats in the synagogues

and the places of honor at banquets. They

devour widows’ houses and for a show

make lengthy prayers. Such men will be pun-

ished most severely.”

forward, I am cutting back on how much we

as a council schedule to no more than one

council-sponsored activity a month. We can

accomplish more by having more members

participate in fewer activities.

I still want to hear from you if you

have an idea of an activity that meets the

need of our parish and community that you

want our council to do, so please send me

your ideas.

Founders Award or Insurance: I

know we offer an excellent insurance pro-

gram for Knights and our families. Howev-

er, our annual goal should not be toward

meeting a quota. Instead, each of us should

meet with our Field Agent annually to deter-

mine if we as an individual Knight are

providing for our family in the event of our

absence. If not, then please take advantage

of this fraternal insurance to close that gap

not provided by work benefits, commercial

insurance, etc. Know also that our council

will be there for your family, to help them in

anyway we can, because we are a brother-

hood, and that is what it means to be

Knight.

Father McGivney Award or Member-

ship: October is our membership drive. I

was given permission by Father Glen, and

will make a motion in the upcoming busi-

ness meeting, to vote to choose one weekend

this month to have a table outside each par-

ish to passively recruit by offering pam-

phlets, form 100s, and answering any ques-

tions by parishioners.

However, too often in the past we

have pushed to achieve a quota by bringing

in new members via a first-degree exemplifi-

cation, then we never hear or see that new

member ever again. Partly this is our fault

by not reaching out to them, and we are

working on correcting this error. Expect to

hear from us in the near fu-

ture. Instead of trying to

meet a quota, we need men

and their families who want

to commit to help us meet

the needs of our parish and

community. If they are al-

ready active in ministries or

the community, even better,

we want them as Knights

and we want to know what

all of our existing members

are doing for others.

For example, I was

asked to join the Knights

many years before I actual-

ly did so. When I joined, I

was at a point in my life

where I was ready and

wanted to give back to oth-

ers the blessings I have

enjoyed. We should not

push people to join us that

are not ready just to meet

a quota.

When you talk to

parishioners tell them why

you joined, see if they are

ready to make a commit-

ment to helping others,

and only if they are ready

ask them to join.

We will continue to

submit everything we do

to State and Supreme. If

we happen to qualify for

an award, fine. If not then

The money raised will be used for two

categories: to help put on children’s events

such as the annual Halloween-Christmas

party and the free throw contest; and to

fund a booster award for college students.

The dinner will include a Frito pie,

beans, red chile, lemonade or tea, and a

dessert. They will also be having a bake

sale.

Also, if anyone is attending the Wom-

en’s Española Sacred Heart ACTS send-off

mass at 5:30, come join us afterwards for a

Frito Pie.
