We are very thankful for the service the law enforcement provide for our communities. Please join us at our shelter house on Sunday, Aug. 12, from 4 to 6 p.m. There will be lots of great food, family fun and recognition.

Thanks, Pastor Dennis

WELLNESS NEWS

Wellness Awarenessby CHERYL HOWARD, parish nurse

“Go out into the world and love the people you meet.” Mother Teresa

4MOORESVILLE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

AHHHHHH – THE LOWLY MUSHROOM! They are a good addition to your diet. The specific benefits vary, but they are a good source of antioxidants, iron, calcium, protein, and if left in the sun, they absorb vitamin D and give it to you when eaten!!!

DEMENTIAAll of us are or will be touched by someone with dementia. It affects about 5.7 million Americans. Humor Therapy is one way to connect. Laughter therapy has been around a long time – Clown Doctors

work in children’s hospitals to lift moods and increase interaction with children. As persons with dementia lose cognitive function, they also lose the ability to laugh and smile. But some types of laughter are still present! Some laugh

after sleeping well or having a good meal or when they reach a goal that is recognized by others. As a caring person, respond back with a big smile, reassurance or your own laugh! The positive effects of humor can last weeks for those with dementia. Be a part of that positive impact :-)

HEARTBURN Heartburn should always be taken seriously. There has been a notable increase in esophageal cancer as we also see a rise in GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). The increase in reflux is in part due to obesity, eating large meals and increased stress levels. Pay attention and make changes!

MEDICINE PRICES Prices for some medications are unbelievable! Some people are making decisions between medicines and food. Before this happens, use some resources. Call your insurance company before you get your medications. They may have coupons or discount cards you can use. They may also refer you to their pharmacist who can further advise or speak to your physician about alternatives. Go to the drug’s web site. Many of them have patient assistance programs. Go to goodrx.com. You can put in the name of your medication and it will tell you the cheapest places to buy it or give you a coupon. Don’t stop taking a medicine – tell your doctor if it is too costly and allow them to assist you.

The Answer to Your Prayersby CATHY MOSIER

Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy WILL be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

Mark Batterson says in the book If, that planning without praying is a waste of time and that praying without planning is a waste of energy!

So the question is…what are you planning to do with the answer to your prayers?

Are you praying as if it depends on GOD and working as if it depends on you? Remember it’s both/and not either/or.

If you need prayers where can you go? Our Prayer Team is waiting to join their prayers with yours before Our Loving Father GOD’s throne! There’s a place in the bulletin to write down your prayer need AND the prayer team will be praying! PLUS if it’s a “private request,” a small confidential group meets in the Prayer Chapel each Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. to lift those “private requests” before our LORD’s throne of Mercy and Grace.

So the question remains…what are you planning to do with the answer to your prayers?

GOD’s Word contains beautiful, heart felt, angry, crying, thankful prayers written by 40 different authors, from three continents and a wide variety of occupations AND each one inspired by GOD! When you get your answer to prayer, will you humbly bow and ask GOD to work HIS WILL in the answer? Will you allow GOD to work in the answer, no matter what the answer is, to bring about HIS Good?

So the question is still…what are you planning to do with the answer to your prayers?

Mark Batterson also reminds us: The outcome of our actions and inactions have unintended consequences that are beyond our ability to control, beyond our ability to predict.

BUT, GOD takes the unintended consequences to a new level! Remember there are no surprises for GOD!

Remember Joseph and his jealous brothers? Their story is told from Genesis 37-50 in great detail. They sold Joseph into slavery and Genesis 50:20 tells us the unintended consequence when GOD is part of the situation. “You intended to harm me, BUT GOD, intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

I’m sure Joseph prayed for deliverance daily. I’m sure Joseph prayed to be reunited with his father, Jacob, daily. I’m sure Joseph prayed that the cup bearer would not forget his promise. Joseph was praying as if his release/rescue/deliverance depended on GOD and worked as if it depended on him. Yet Joseph waited…and waited…and waited for GOD’s answer to his prayers.

GOD did NOT plant the seed of jealousy in the brothers’ hearts! GOD did not give them the idea to sell Joseph and tell Jacob a “wild animal” tore Joseph apart! BUT GOD took their jealousy and lies and used them to bring about HIS GOOD!

My NIV Student Study Bible lists Psalms for a variety of circumstances. Here are just a few:

- A plea for help in time of trouble. Psalms 5, 17, 25, 31, 61

- A prayer for when near despair. Psalms 39, 42, 43, 55, 73, 77, 86, 88, 02, 130

- A prayer for forgiveness and help. Psalms 6, 32, 38, 51, 143

- Reminders to rest in GOD’s goodness. Psalms 4, 11, 23, 27, 63, 67, 91, 115, 121, 125, 139

Are you intentionally getting into GOD’s WORD? Are you intentionally hiding GOD’s WORD in your heart? Are you intentionally speaking GOD’s WORD over your children? spouse? grandchildren?

In Christ’s service, Cathy Mosier Prayer Team/Stephen Ministry Team

The Best Instruction Manualby CHERYLL HOWELL

Monday started out a beautiful day, so I thought I’d go find the closest BMV so I could get my drivers license renewed. Little did I know they had moved it from the little strip mall off 67. So I

Googled its location. I drove all around looking for this street, that street, ANY street that would or could be hiding the BMV. After 45 minutes, asking four people, and a lot of gas, I gave up and just went home.

Tuesday, I just had to find one (my license had expired on the 12th). I thought I’d fool them all and just go to Plainfield. Theirs is just down the street from where I grew up. Well…unbeknownst to me…they had moved too! So back to Google. My goodness, why do people expect so much from me? I can read a paper map with the best of them, but directions on my little phone screen was harder than I thought. I was amazed that I could even remember how to do it. So off I drove. Looking for streets I didn’t even know existed. That little red circle with an arrow on the bottom was just a ploy to run the remaining gas from my car. And then!! I found the street and looking up, there it was!

That experience (and the general good feeling) registered to me as a person looking for peace, fulfillment, and a better life. We search and search – we ask along the way – we see the signs around us – yet if we only asked for God’s help we would find our way. Now God may not come right out and tell you, but you can confidently follow his directions and eventually find what you need for a fuller life. Don’t get lost with all the instant gratifications you may find on Google or in life. You can find all you need with a little help from the BIG THREE: God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. I hear they have the best instruction manual around!

Senior Picnic in the ParkThe Morgan County Council on Aging will be hosting a picnic in Pioneer Park on Aug. 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Any of our seniors interested in going with transportation issues, please contact the church office at 317.831.3376.

Henderson Mission Team Update by DAVE NANCE

The Henderson Mission Team’s next fundraising/fellowship activity is parking cars during the Old Settlers Festival. This event will run Sunday through Tuesday, Aug. 5, 6, 7. The team is

currently taking shift sign-ups for assistance in parking cars

OCTOBER MISSION TRIP We are in the planning process for a trip to Henderson Settlement in Frakes, Kentucky. The next trip will occur on the week of Oct. 15. The only prerequisites required are a desire to serve, fellowship, and travel for 3 to 5 days. Please let us know if you have any desire to travel to the Settlement as part of the October trip. There is a mix of service projects, both on campus and in the community, that would need 2 to 6 people for 3 or 4 days. Community and campus projects include almost any light, home-improvement project you can imagine. Campus projects also include ranching, sports field maintenance, and garden/greenhouse projects.

If you are at all interested in more information, please contact Dave Nance at [email protected]. Currently we are planning campus projects related to the garden/greenhouse and possibly work on the missions/community baseball field. While in the area we will likely plan a visit to Red Bird Mission, sister UMC mission to Henderson Settlement. There are a lot of possible opportunities, we just need YOU!

SERVING AND CONNECTING Participating in the activities of a group, like the Henderson Mission Team, is a great way to connect with others in the Church you may not otherwise get to know. The only prerequisite for serving with the mission team, is a desire to serve God by serving others. Through that service you will not only be assisting others in need in SE Kentucky and our local community, you will also enjoy the benefits of fellowship with like believers.

AUGUST 2018

Let’s Be Healthy TogetherA stroke occurs every 40 seconds and yet up to 80

percent of strokes can be prevented. That said, First United Methodist Church is hosting Life Line Screening, the nation’s leading provider of preventive health screenings, on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2017.

Life Line Screening will offer their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to blocked arteries which is the leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening on the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis.

Register for a Wellness Package which includes four vascular tests for $139 or add an osteoporosis screening for $149. All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. Receive a $25 discount by registering one of these ways: calling Life Line at 1-877-380-1743, visiting www.lifelinescreening.com/communitycircle or text the word ‘circle’ to 797979.

First United Methodist Church has the first opportunity to register for screenings. This event will be publicized to the public soon. Don’t wait and register today!

Sing Praise to the Lord by REBECCA VERNON

Do you love to sing? Always wanted to join the choir? Would you only be able to come once a month? Would you be able to join us at Christmas?

The Chancel Choir sings at the 8:30 service from September through May. We understand how busy everyone is, so we have created a questionnaire to see how we can help you join the choir. Find the questionnaire in the pews, fill it out, and drop it in the offering plate or return it to the office.

We would love for you to join us!!
