Farlington holds at the heart of all it does the importanceof each girl’s individuality, and therefore aims to:

• Focus on developing the confidence of every girl, to enable her to achieve her full potential and establish necessary life skills for continuing success and happiness.

• Encourage an awareness of, and foster a responsibility for, each other, the School and the wider environment, through which our strong relationship with the local community will continue to grow.

• Develop each girl’s awareness of herself and sense of social responsibility and citizenship based on moral and spiritual values and promote the highest standards of behaviour in a school that emphasizes tolerance and loyalty.

• Recruit and retain well-motivated, professional and appropriately qualified staff and governors who embrace the School’s ethos and have a strong commitment to the well-being and education of the girls.

Code of Conduct

• All members of the Farlington community are expected to act considerately, and show respect towards each other.

• Pupils are expected to make full use of the opportunities available to them. Work should be completed to the highest possible standard and handed in on time.

• Pupils are expected to respect the rights and property of others. If there is a need to borrow something always ask the owner first and return it as soon as possible.

• All pupils should work towards improving the Eco status of the School; REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE.

• Every pupil should take responsibility for their own actions.

• If a pupil is absent from a lesson due to an extra-curricular activity, they should fill in an ‘Absence from Lesson’ form and hand it to their teacher by the previous lesson at the latest.

• Commitment to teams, clubs and extra-curricular activities is important. Attendance at matches/meetings/ concerts is expected; if absence is unavoidable, notice should be given to the teacher at least two days in advance.

• All pupils should look after school property, and not drop litter anywhere in the buildings or in the grounds.

• For their own safety, girls must keep within the bounds when in the school grounds.

• Pupils are expected to suggest and support ways of helping others within and outside the Farlington Community.

Entrance Procedures

The usual ages of entry are 2+, 4+, 7+, 11+ and 16+,although girls may enter at any age dependent upon a placebeing available and the entrance procedure below. In orderfor pupils to be considered for entry, parents first need tocomplete a Registration Form which should be sent to theRegistrar, together with the non-refundable registration feeof £50 for Nursery pupils, £100 for day pupils and £150 foroverseas pupils.

Nursery

• Entry to Nursery is by family interview, followed by an informal assessment by the Nursery Manager.

Prep School

• Entry to Reception is by family interview, followed by an informal assessment by the class teacher.

• Entry to Prep 1, 2 and 3 is based on the result of an informal assessment.

• Girls entering Prep 4, 5 and 6 will be assessed in English, Mathematics, Reading and Spelling. A report from their current school will also be required.

Senior School

• Entrance examinations take place on Tuesday, 5 January, 2016 for entry in September 2016.

• The closing date for registration is Friday, 20 November, 2015.

• Places are offered on the basis of performance in the examination, an interview with a senior member of staff and a report from the current school.

Specimen examination papers are available from the Registrar after registration.

Sixth Form

• Students are required to achieve at least 6 GCSEs at grade C or above.

• Entrants will also be interviewed by the Headmistress or Head of Sixth Form.

• Minimum grades may be required for certain A Level subjects.

• A report from the current school will also be required.

Open Events

Open Events provide an opportunity to see the School inaction. Examples of academic and creative work are ondisplay. There is a programme of events which includes atour of the School, a talk from the Headmistress on our aimsand activities, and time for parents to ask questions of theHeadmistress and Senior Staff.

Generally this is open on the firstday of term, 8.15 - 9.15am, and every Friday during termfrom 3.20pm - 4.30pm.

Bursaries

The School offers means tested bursaries up to 90% oftuition fees for all prospective and current pupils normally from Year 5 upwards. Bursaries are not available when one ormore parent is resident outside of the UK, with the exceptionof serving members of the UK Armed Forces and members ofthe UK Diplomatic Corps.

The main bursary award process is carried out in the firsthalf of the Spring Term and applications should be made inthe second half of the preceding Autumn Term.

Subject to available funds, applications for bursaries will beconsidered at other times of the year, on a half-termly basisif parental circumstances change unexpectedly.

Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded on merit. Scholarships will beheld for the duration of the girl’s time at Farlington, subjectto annual review. Scholarships are available at three pointsof entry in the Senior School.

Year 7Scholarships available to both internal and externalcandidates are: Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sport.The Vive Scholarship is available to girls who excel academically as well as in another area. External candidates who sit the Entrance Examination in January 2016 will automatically be considered for Academic Scholarships. Internal candidates applying for Academic Scholarships need to apply in consultation with the Prep School Headmistress. The closing date for registration is Friday, 20 November, 2015.

Year 9

Sixth FormScholarships available to both internal and external candidates are: Academic, Music, Sport, Drama and Art/Textiles. Candidates should be registered and entered by Friday, 16 October, 2015 as the assessment will take place on Tuesday, 10 November, 2015.

Boarding

Our Boarding Houses are comfortable and friendly with agenuine family feel; girls may board from the age of 8.

• Taxis and Transfers – Boarding House staff are happy to arrange taxi transfers to and from host families or guardians and airports when necessary. It is recommended that boarders up to the age of 14 travel as Unaccompanied Minors on flights.

• Rooms – Younger boarders share in dormitories of two to five beds in Fishponds, our Junior Boarding House.

Older girls are accommodated in the Mansion House with Sixth Form boarders in twin or single bedrooms.

• Bed Linen – Duvets and pillows can be provided by the School but we recommend that boarders have two sets of their own bed linen.

• Activities – Boarders staying at weekends are offered a wide range of activities from cinema trips and pottery painting to theme parks and laser quest. These activities are compulsory for boarders up to and including Year 10. The cost will be added to the end of term account.

• School Facilities – Boarders may use the School facilities in the evenings and at weekends, with permission of the Housemistress. These include the swimming pool, tennis courts, the Drama Studio and the Art Room.

• Prep – Boarders complete their prep after school before returning to the Boarding Houses.

• Guardians – All overseas boarders must have a local guardian in order that the girls can be accommodated for Exeats and in case of emergencies.

• Flexi and Occasional Boarding – Flexi and occasional boarding is offered where space is available. However, priority is given to weekly and full boarding places.

• Mealtimes – Boarders eat together at breakfast and supper in the Boarders’ Dining Room. Lunchtimes are spent with their classmates in the School Dining Room.

• Laundry – Laundry is done by the Matrons for girls up to Year 11. Sixth Form boarders do their own laundry with

guidance from House Staff.

• Medical – Homely remedies may be administered by Boarding House Staff. Boarders are registered with the School Doctor.

• Free Time – Boarders have a variety of board games, games consoles, art and craft supplies and DVDs to entertain themselves in the evenings.

• Boarders’ Shop – Charge added to the end of term account.

• Bedtimes – Bedtimes are staggered dependent on the boarders’ ages, ranging from 7.45pm for the younger boarders to 10.30pm for Sixth Form.

Pastoral Care

Farlington’s emphasis on care and guidance in personaldevelopment is underlined in our pastoral system.Throughout the Prep and Senior Schools all the teachersare particularly skilled at ensuring that the girls settle inquickly, become familiar with their surroundings and makenew friends. In the Senior School each girl is placed in atutor group where she is given individual attention. Tutorsliaise with Heads of Year, other members of the teachingstaff, boarding staff (where appropriate) and parents. Theymonitor each girl’s welfare as well as academic progress andextra-curricular activities. Tutor teams are led by the Head ofeach Year and report to the Assistant Head.

Curriculum

The Prep School:Literacy and numeracy are the building blocks of education,and the basis of our teaching.

We follow the National Curriculum but, because of thesmaller class sizes, we are able to offer more in terms ofsubject content and, of course, individual attention. As girlsprogress, they are taught by specialist subject teachers inFrench, Spanish, Music, Drama, Art and PE/Games. In Prep6, Science is taught in the well-equipped laboratories in theSenior School. A variety of musical activities take place andindividual tuition can be arranged for most instruments.

The Lower School (Years 7, 8 & 9):This is based on the National Curriculum, but offers morechallenge and a broader range of subjects. Most teachingtakes place in Form groups, with some subjects set asappropriate. French, Spanish and Latin are taught from Year 7.

The Upper School (Years 10 & 11)In the Upper School, girls prepare for their GCSE courses.In Year 10, they complete the Short Course GCSE in Philosophy and Ethics (R.S.)

The core subjects at GCSE are English Language, EnglishLiterature, Mathematics and Science (Physics, Chemistry andBiology). Most Science and Mathematics groups follow theIGCSE syllabus.

Girls choose a further four options, at least one from each section listed:

Triple Award Science is offered in one of the option columns and GCSE German and Italian as after-school lessons.

Sixth Form: There is a purpose built Sixth Form Centre containing aspacious library, seminar rooms used exclusively for A Levelteaching, two large common rooms and a kitchen. Thecurriculum offers a wide range of AS and A2 courses. Mostgirls follow four AS courses in the Lower Sixth and three A2courses in the Upper Sixth, although the programme can betailored to suit individual needs.

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is also offered,giving students the opportunity to produce an independentpiece of research.

Beyond the formal A Level programme, girls are encouragedto develop a wide range of interests. Many are involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, True Adventure, Young Enterprise and Voluntary Service, as well as a host of music, drama and sporting opportunities. The girls are encouraged to continue with their sporting interests, and matches are arranged for the school teams as well as a programme of social sport, with which we hope the girls will continue when they leave school. These extras form a very important part of the girls’ UCAS profile – the key to securing places at the universities of their choice.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Sport: In addition to a full PE and games programme thereare regular fixtures with other schools in a number of sports.Girls compete in local, regional and national competitionsand Farlington hosts a number of tournaments each year.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme: All three levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold are available.

Riding: Farlington has a strong tradition of riding, having competed in schools’ competitions at national level for more than 20 years.

Music: Girls have the opportunity to learn any instrument and to take part in many instrumental and choral groups. They perform regularly within School as well as at external concerts and festivals. Girls can be entered for the Trinity Guildhall examinations.

Dance: The School hosts the de Braam Ballet Academy which runs classes for Prep and Senior girls. Jazz and Zumba classes are also available.

Drama: Each year we stage three major School productions – Prep, Lower and Upper School. Many girls also take LAMDA examinations.

Optional Extra-Curricular

Lessons

These are paid for as taken, and charges appear on theappropriate “Extras” Forms sent to all parents during theSummer Term. There is a requirement to give a minimumof one term’s notice if your daughter wishes to stop herextra lessons.

Learning Support and

Challenge

The Head of Learning Support and Challenge leads a strongteam who provide extra individual attention for the girls,which includes:

• extra tuition for girls for whom English is an additional language (EAL).

• additional support to girls who have mild to moderate learning difficulties.

• Accounts for the subsequent term are dispatched at the end of the preceding term.

• All fees are payable in advance and must be sent to the School not later than the first day of the term to which they relate.

• No reductions can be made for the temporary absence of a pupil due to illness (an insurance scheme is available) or absence from School due to study leave or during public examinations.

• Payment may be made direct to the School’s bank account or by cheque. Direct Debit is available at no additional cost; please contact the Assistant Bursar for further information.

• The School requires a deposit £400 for Day Girls, £500 for Boarders (from the UK), a term’s fees for Boarders from overseas, £120 for Nursery (an additional deposit of £280 is required on entry to Reception. This deposit must be paid when a place is accepted).

• If a pupil for whom a place has been reserved is withdrawn before the agreed starting date, a term’s fees (less deposit held by the School) will be payable. The deposit will be returned during the first half of the term following your daughter’s final term.

• Notice must be given in writing to the Headmistress and received not later than the first day of the term at the end of which it is proposed to withdraw the pupil. Parents who do not give the required notice will be charged for the following term.

• Fee payment in advance – Further details are available on application to the Bursar.

• Fee account - Apart from the basic fee appropriate to your daughter, there are various items shown which are payable in advance. (Details of the Fees Refund Scheme which, provides cover in the event of your daughter missing schooling due to illness for a continuous period of at least 4 days for boarders and 5 days in respect of day girls, including weekends). Personal Accident and Personal Effects Insurance schemes will be provided with your first fee account. A termly charge of £2.50 is made for membership of the PTA.

• Development Fund Fee Draw – a prize of a term’s senior day fees is drawn termly. The contribution of £30 is shown as an extra unless parents opt out.
