Widely recognized for our highly individual approach to design, our firm
has received over 200 awards for design excellence.
With a staff of highly trained, immensely talented and deeply passion-
ate individuals in our San Francisco, Miami and Shenzhen offices, we
successfully merge more than fifty years of experience with the energy,
drive and dedication of a second generation of partners. With the tech-
nical capabilities and the understanding to take even the largest proj-
ects from initial concept through construction anywhere in the world, we
remain a hands-on, design-oriented practice at heart. Integrity in
design, connection to the client and balance in our corporate culture are
integral to our identity.
Our vast experience with a wide array of project types, geographic loca-
tions, construction techniques and architectural styles gives us a high
level of expertise, while our collaborative process and individual
approach to each project allow us to be flexible and responsive.
Site-sensitive design has been a hallmark of our practice. We strive to
honor the site with design solutions inspired by the regional vernacular,
local materials and the sense of place inherent within each location, and
we are dedicated to advocating sustainable design and construction
methods on all of our projects.
SB ARCHITECTS has established a world-wide
reputation for excellence in the planning and
design of large-scale hotel, resort, multi-family
residential, and mixed-use projects.

OUR VALUE LIES IN OUR KNOWLEDGE, RELATIONSHIPS AND PROCESS
Key senior staff champion the sustainable design process.
Established relationships with some of the world’s leading consultants
allow us to eff ectively follow an integrated design process.
Our commitment to the site inspires us to prioritize research and deep
understanding as key elements of the design process.
Our emphasis on communication, fl exibility and innovation allow us to
function eff ectively within an integrated design team.
Our long-standing reputation for establishing and maintaining a strong
design vision allows us to champion an authentic, sustainable approach
to design and development.
As we work to create authentic, sustainable destinations around the globe,
we partner with a broad spectrum of consultants and certifying organizations

and Audubon International give us the tools to create unique projects that live
in harmony with their surroundings. Our process begins with a deep respect
for the site, the history of the land and the culture of its people. We are fully
aware that to create authentic destinations, we must preserve the elements
that have drawn us there in the fi rst place.

A Ritz-Carlton Reserve
D O R A D O ,
P U E R T O R I C O
This one-of-a-kind resort - the second Ritz-
Carlton Reserve and the first in the
Western Hemisphere - opened in December
2012 on the site of the famed Dorado
Beach Hotel originally developed by
Laurance Rockefeller. The unique
architecture takes its cue from two
important influences: the site itself and the
rich, multi-layered history of both Puerto
Rico and Dorado Beach. The architecture is
contemporary, and draws heavily from the
mid-century modern vernacular in a direct
reference to the period that gave rise to
the original Dorado Beach Resort. Yet the
environment and structures are warm and
inviting, infused with layers of references to
the surrounding natural world and to the
many cultures – both ancient and modern –
that have influenced life on this unique
island. The Reserve has been designed for
LEED Certification.

This 6,600 square-foot home sits between
the beach and the East Beach Golf Course
in the exclusive community of Dorado
Beach, adjacent to the acclaimed Ritz-
Carlton Reserve. The home was carefully
designed to provide views of water, golf and
lush landscape in every direction. The
beachfront facade features disappearing
glass walls designed to make the interior
spaces live as covered exterior areas. Each
of the five bedrooms is a suite, and the sec-

overlooking the sea. The kitchen also opens
to a large covered dining terrace right on
the beach.

C A L I F O R N I A
This unique resort and private residence club
is nestled on 23 wooded acres in the heart of
the California wine country. The remainder of
the 157-acre site has been left undeveloped.
The property contains both resort and fraction-
al ownership units, each designed to blur the
line between indoor and outdoor spaces, creat-
ing a “bungalow-in-the woods” experience in
which the spectacular natural surroundings are
the most important amenity. Living and bed-
room spaces surround private cabanas (out-
door living rooms) complete with outdoor fire-
places, lighting and comfortable furnishings.
The resort units range from 600 to 2,400
square feet of indoor/outdoor space, and the
fractional ownership units average 3,200
square feet of space. The architecture is a mix
of indigenous natural materials with steel and
glass elements, emphasizing the indoor/outdoor
lifestyle and casual elegance that typify the
Napa Valley.

The residential resort community of Bahia

on the island of Puerto Rico. Set amid lush
vegitation, the residences are surrounded by
views in every direction, overlooking the
ocean, golf course, lakes and mountains. A
spectacular new golf clubhouse and inviting
village center provide a social hub for the
community. The architecture brings together
Asian, Mediterranean and tropical influences
to create a simple yet elegant style unique to
this resort. The lightly-colored buildings
employ a subtle, refined elegance by using
natural materials indigenous to the island.
Open-air spaces with exposed trusses, deep

the lush vegetation envelopes the buildings
in nature. The project has received certifica-

This 5-star luxury resort hotel lies at the

Certification by Audubon International, in
recognition of its sustainable approach to
design and development. SB Architects has
been responsible for the design of the
resort residential community, golf clubhouse
and conference center, as well as the St.

project through the final, formative stages
of design and construction. The relaxed,
plantation style architecture blends a
refined sense of elegance with a limited
palette of forms and materials that ground
it in the surrounding culture and topogra-

Golf Resort, sited along the fairways of
holes 16 and 17. With nearly 14,000 square

The goal for this project was to renovate
and expand the famed Lodge at Rancho
Mirage to become The Ritz-Carlton Rancho
Mirage. Set on a spectacular hillside site,
with views of the desert valley below and
mountains in all directions, this venerable
five-star resort has been reborn. The task
included a complete renovation of the
hotel, as well as the addition of a spectacu-
lar indoor/outdoor restaurant on the cliff’s
edge, as well as a new full-service spa and
spa suites. The design team has updated
the architecture and interiors to better
reflect the desert setting. With an empha-
sis on natural colors and tactile materials,
and a renewed focus on indoor/outdoor liv-
ing, the new design provides a serene set-
ting for this desert retreat.

Set on 135 acres in the Temecula foot-

the forefront of the trend toward the
development of experiential, wine and
food-centered destinations. The resort –
which will accommodate close to 200
guests - will be set directly within the
vineyards, surrounded by numerous
event spaces, a farm-to-table restaurant,
a stand-alone brewery and a winery
capable of producing 60,000 cases per
year. The architecture embodies a truly
“American” design aesthetic - a sophisti-

style. Dry-stacked stone walls and a
color palette that reflects the surround-

resort in the fertile, yet rocky terrain of
the Temecula Wine Country.

One of the leading examples of the urban
mixed-use project type in the country, this
project replaces an aging single-story
mall, (with 100% surface parking), with a
densely designed, multi-story mixed-use
community that incorporates all of its
parking needs within the new structures.
On the podiums of Buildings 7 and 8, inte-
rior streets provide access to flats and
direct-entry townhouses (each with its own
garage), creating real neighborhoods
above street level. The main street is high-
lighted by a median park and lined with
ground-floor retail, restaurants and public
gathering places, which invoke the impres-
sion of an urban district that has devel-
oped over time. San Jose Mercury News
architecture critic Alan Hess commented,
“Santana Row shows the extraordinary
value added by good design...”

“Heart of the City” re-development effort
to revitalize the city of San Jose. This high-
density, urban mixed-use project provides
197 for-sale condominiums and 32,000
square feet of retail, restaurants and enter-

housing and a vibrant public gathering
place to the community. The design juxta-
poses a signature 22-story high-rise tower
with a mixed-use component. The tower
rises from the mid-rise structure below,
overlooking the residential amenities - pool,

outdoor seating bisects the city block. This
transit-oriented development is directly
adjacent to the Santa Clara Valley light rail

SB Architects won an international design
competition for the master-planning and design
of Phase One of this expansive master-planned
development, which includes 7 mixed-use struc-

the largest marina in Beirut. Set upon a grand
pedestrian promenade raised seven meters
above sea level, the four central structures will
house high-end residences above a carefully or-

creating a sophisticated and exciting urban
destination. When complete, Waterfront City
will cover an area of over 193,600 square meters,
with more than 5,000 new residences, as well
as commercial and retail districts, a destination

SB Architects is working with Dacra on
an ambitious expansion of the Miami De-
sign District. Palm Court, the fi rst phase
of the expansion project, introduces a
a whole new approach to retail design
and architecture. The design team is
creating the architectural skeleton for
the block – addressing building structure,
overall identity and the movement of
people through the space - and giving
the individual retailers the opportunity
to create the entire 45-foot facade for
their structures. A pedestrian ‘paseo’ will
bisect the multi-block expansion, with
grand plazas at either end. Green roofs
top nearly every structure, and the entire

Included on Conde Nast’s 2008 “Hot List” of
the world’s hottest new hotels, this project
transforms an historic but tired hotel in the
heart of San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter into an
ultra-chic boutique hotel that has instantly
become a major destination. The design team
took the six-story structure down to the shell to
create a completely new experience on the
interior, while the exterior received a respectful
renovation that enhanced the historic façade
with minimalistic details. This destination hotel
is defined by its dramatic public spaces, from
the basement nightclub and lounge, to the
rooftop bar, outdoor restaurant and pool with
panoramic views of downtown San Diego. At
every turn, the architecture and interiors work
together to create the unexpected – sleek,
modern architectural forms combined with
dramatic, over-the-top interiors, all within a
restrained historic envelope.

This project in San Francisco’s Mission
District combines flats and two-level town-
houses for a total of 76 for-sale residential
units. An existing three-story brick ware-
house has been transformed into 23 resi-
dential units. A new courtyard building
adjacent to the warehouse houses 53 units.
Five levels of residences overlook a court-
yard situated one level below grade, with
four levels overlooking street views.
Parking is housed in two levels below the
courtyard. The design of the new construc-
tion is distinctly urban in character. An
eclectic vocabulary of architectural refer-
ences reflects the neighborhood, which
includes residential, industrial, commercial
and retail enterprises. A mixture of materi-
als, combined with set-back elements, bays
and covered balconies, creates a lively
facade.
This signature mixed-use project is designed to
make a dramatic architectural statement on the
skyline of St. Petersburg, Florida. A 41-story
residential tower with 253 living units will rise out
of a parking structure that will provide a podium
level pool and amenities deck. Bookending the
parking structure will be a 14-story, 174-key hotel.
Street-front retail spaces totalling 15,000 square
feet will make this a true mixed-use development

Located in a charming neighborhood of
buildings designed in the Mediterranean style
of iconic Florida architect Addison Mizner, this
new mixed-use development will add a lifestyle
destination to this desirable area. The complex,
part of the Via Mizner development, will have a
retail and dining component on the street and
podium levels, capped by two towers, one
housing a Mardarin Oriental hotel and the
other branded luxury residential. To maintain a
connection to the existing neighborhood with
its historic low-rise structures, the lifestyle
center and hidden structured parking will
create a three-story facade along the street,
with the towers set back to have less impact on
the streetscape. This will also allow the
branded towers to have a separate, more
contemporary aethetic. Upon completion the
project will provide the only five-star hotel in

architecture is an elegant interpretation of

Nestled in the hills of Mill Valley just across the
Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, this cus-
tom home is the first LEED-H Platinum Certified
home in Marin County, and one of the first in the
state of California. This home is a statement of
what is possible in “high design and high sustain-
ability.” This project represents the collaborative
effort of a visionary group of partner companies,
who have come together to bring this first-of-its-
kind project to Marin County. The architectural
vocabulary is a careful balance between modern
sensibilities and the rustic, natural surroundings –
a modern cabin. Set deep into the hillside, nearly
20% of the home’s total square footage sits
below grade, taking maximum advantage of the
hill’s natural insulation. A central circulation core
connects four levels of living spaces, each of
which embraces the outdoors through expansive
windows and decks. Every window in the home
opens to a view of the trees, and many to a view
of the San Francisco skyline.
SB Architects is currently the project
architect for an extensive renovation of
the iconic Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn &
Spa. The renovation included the lobby,
lobby bar, Michelin Star-rated “Sante” res-
taurant, meeting facilities and Heritage
Suites. On the exterior, there will be
sweeping changes to the arrival, land-
scape, signage and pedestrian circulation.
The firm is also working with the Sonoma
County Landmarks Commission on a pro-
posed exterior addition that will enhance
the arrival experience and the lobby. The
renovation is designed to better align the
historic resort with the Fairmont brand’s
position and standards. The overall
design will respect the hotel’s character
while appealing to a younger demograph-
ic consistent with other luxury properties
in the area.

Kato Drys is a small ancient village in a moun-
tainous region of southern Cyprus that has
been producing wines since biblical times.
Situated on a hill overlooking the village, this
small boutique resort will house a full-produc-
tion winery as well as a 55-room hotel with cot-
tages. Reminiscent of the ancient stone struc-
tures found in this region, building components
will be situated to create a series of plazas,
each with it’s own character and function
including a spa court and wine-tasting terrace.
The resort will also be a venue for weddings
and other events with a church, ballroom, spe-
cial events hall, event lawn, exhibition hall, and
other indoor and outdoor event facilities. A
cultural village will feature Cypriot cuisine,
hand-craft specialties, and demonstrations by
local artisans.

One of the most exclusive residential
addresses in the world, Fisher Island fea-
tures luxurious primary and secondary
homes, averaging 3,500 square feet, but
ranging from one-bedroom beach-front
villas to 8,000-square-foot penthouses. A
membership club, with guest accommoda-
tions and an elaborate health spa, has
been adapted from the original
Mediterranean-style Vanderbilt estate,
which served as the design inspiration for
the entire project. The lushly landscaped
island has ample open space, and a cham-
pionship, P. B. Dye-designed 9-hole golf
course with clubhouse. Other amenities
include fitness trails, beaches, a 16-court
tennis club, a commercial center and a
marina. SB Architects has been the exclu-
sive architect and planner for Fisher
Island throughout nearly three decades of
continuous development.
