in California to 13 students in Lund!

After high school and a year ofcollege, I married my best friendMonty Duane PEACOCK on March

24, 1972. Duane and I have threechildren. Our first born, KassandraAnn PEACOCK, age 30, lives in SaltLake City, Utah and works for an in-surance company. Our second child,Michael Duane PEACOCK, will be26 on his great grandmother's birth-day. He works for a tire company inLas Vegas, Nevada -- he has alwaysbeen the accident prone one, buthopefully he's finally outgrown it.Our third child is Derek CharlesPEACOCK, just turned 22, and cur-rently in the US Army, stationed atCamp Humphreys, Korea. He hasbeen there one year and we don'tknow when we will see him. Ourhouse is pretty quiet with just the twoof us and our two dachshunds!

I've been actively involved with

genealogy for years. I tried to findmy dad's ancestors before he passedaway but didn't have a lot of luck. One day my mom mentioned that hermom's side of genealogy was donethanks to her uncle, Chris JOCKUM-SEN. Why didn't I try to find someinformation on my Grandpa's side ashe never knew anything. I took thechallenge!

I started with my Grandpa, EddieBuehl COOPER. I had his birth cer-tificate, it had been a delayed birthcertificate but it still had plenty of in-formation. My mom didn't know a lotabout his parents and siblings, otherthan his dad, Wiley Clinton COO-PER, had died when Eddie was tenyears old.

Wiley had died in Kersey, Colo-rado. His wife, Laura GARNERCOOPER, and their six children livedthere for many years before moving toIdaho. It was there that son Eddiemet and married Danish emigrant,Anna Marie JOCKUMSEN on Sep-tember 28, 1928. Eddie Buehl COO-PER and Anna Marie had five chil-dren.

Laura GARNER and Wiley Clin-ton COOPER were both born andraised in Missouri. Wiley had ablacksmith shop in Maries Co, Mis-souri.

Wiley's parents were GeorgeBurton COOPER and Nancy RICHA-ARDSON. George and Nancy weremarried March 8, 1874 in Jasper Co,Missouri. Nancy's brother was ajudge and married them. George andNancy had three children, all born in

Jasper County, Missouri: Wiley Clinton COOPER, born May18, 1874; Jesse David COOPER born January 23, 1881; andLizzie May COOPER born December 20, 1883.

Nancy died June 20, 1926, in Purcell, Missouri. After herdeath husband George Burton COOPER moved to Coloradowhere he lived with their son Jesse and operated a gas station. He died January 29, 1936, in Hudson, Colorado. His death cer-tificate was pretty sad to read. His son Jesse didn't know any-thing about George's family and left many blanks.

George Burton COOPER'S parents were Robert WileyCOOPER and Mercy HOPKINS. This where the HOPKINSfamily comes in. If I hadn't been lucky enough to find Janet Iprobably would still be looking for Mercy. Thank You, Janet!

Robert Wiley COOPER was born in Bay, Missouri in 1834,to Burton COOPER and Mary Elvira BURGESS COOPER.Robert had 9 brothers and sisters. Mercy HOPKINS was bornJuly 1, 1834, near Portsmouth, England, in the small town ofHavant. Her parents were George HOPKINS and Jane KNILL.

George Burton COOPER appears to be the only child ofRobert Wiley and Mercy HOPKINS COOPER. I had been toldthere was another son but can't find any evidence to support thisclaim. I believe Robert Wiley COOPER died between 1874-1880. I cannot find proof, but am persistent and will find himeventually! Mercy died June 20, 1876, in Avilla, Missouri andis buried there.

I'm currently researching Laura GARNER COOPER'Smother. She went by several different names and married twiceafter her divorce from Laura's father, Wiley Clinton COOPER.Needless to say it hasn't been very easy!

k' I hope to pass my history and heritage to my kids and niecesand nephews. Perhaps one of them will have as much interest asI have for it! It is a wonderful hobby.

Letter from the editors many of you know, thishas been a difficult sum-mer for my family and

A myself. From illness toinjury to the death of my beloved father,Cleveland HOPKINS. Yet through it all, blessing have been found, new connectionsmade and old friendships rekindled.

As I research our family history, it iscomforting to know that between the linesof the certificates, wills, census pages andother documents lie individuals whoselives encompassed the same joys and sor-rows as our lives. Though they are dead, exploring their lives yields rich secrets andrewards to those of us that enjoy the pas-time of genealogy. Gone but not forgot-ten!

I am continuing my research of parishrecords for towns in the vicinity of Cock-ing and Midhurst. This month I have corn-

pleted reviewing the parish records fromSelham, Easebourne and Iping. Please letme know of individuals you may be look-ing for and the towns they may have in-habited. Of course I always look for thecommon names in our lines and will sharethe results with you if they seem pertinent.

We have a new family member join-ing the subscription list. Jan Dabson,Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, con-tacted me with information concerningRichard HOLT and Olive HOPKINS. Iam hoping she will help with both theHOLT and HOPKINS lines. More tocome in our next issue!

Spend as much time as possible withyour loved ones and live each day to thefullest!

2, 1895. Brother John ROBINSON, ageneral practitioner medical doctor, was raised by his Aunt and Uncle, MaryHOPKINS HICKS and Joseph HICKS,also a doctor. To quote, "... And to paythe remaining one third part or share tomy brother James Robinson of number 16Tuam Street, Christchurch, N.Z." Broth-ers Charles and James had money left tothem as well, showing that they werelikely still alive in 1895. The will also in-dicates that money was left to ". . . thechildren of my late brother Georgeand late brother William and late sisterCharlotte." No mention of sister Hannah, from which one might conclude that she isno longer living. •

EDITORS NOTE: Lyn's sister, CarolTWITE has brother George's will whichbegins thusly, "This is the last Will andTestament of me George ROBINSON ofHeyshott in the County of Sussex, Grocerand Dealer in Underwood."

He had property freehold which isauctioned in parcels. Carol believes whenhe died he owned one of the 'new houses, attractive old cottages beyond Field cot-tage on Peace Road. He called his house,'Hope Cottage', as found in the 1891 cen-sus. This house is in the middle of the row

of new houses. The first house was occu-pied by the ATTFIELDS, George'sdaughter, Emily, married to Tom ATT-FIELD; and ending up with the MILESfamily in the last house.

George himself a widower in1891, isdescribed as age 80 years, working as ahired horse carrier. Living with him is hisyoung grandson, Charles ATTFIELD age13 years.

The oldest living brother, WilliamROBINSON, and his wife, Elizabeth ??,are found in the 1851 census, but not in the1881 census. Could it be that this brotheralso emigrated? Or were he and Elizabethboth deceased. More research is neededto track down William, Elizabeth and theirchildren.

I have done some poking around andsuspect that the couple had at least threechildren, William (b. 1842 in Willsden),Elizabeth (I). 1847 in Brighton) and JohnJames (b. 1848 in Brighton). Son JohnJames apparently stayeetn444yland, mar-rying Ellen GOSDEN, daughterm&Lohnand Philadelphia BLUNDELL GOS,-.1fw.;„DEN, at St. Peter's Church in Brighton. 'wThey had at least three children in Brigh-ton, John (b. 1875), Clara L. (b. 1877) andAlbert G. (b. 1879). This family is found inboth the 1881 and 1901 Censes.

Let's keep exploring!!

Cocking traditionsThis article can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.cotru%7Evillages/sussex/cockinq.htm. Sussex villages and churchesare the subject of wonderfully informative articles.

c4 ocking, or as the locals, were heard to pro-

nounce it "Kokkun", issituated in a gap in the

Downs on the Midhurst to Chichesterroad. Some of the buildings areowned by the Cowdray Estate, so theWoodwork is painted a cheerful yel-low, a color much used by the Estatepainters.

The countryside about the villageis wooded, and the pond has the oddname of Bumblekite. A natural phe-nomenon seen in the area was knownas 'Foxes-Brewings'. This was mist inthe trees which was supposed to fore-cast rain if it was seen to drift west-wards towards Cocking.

Cocking had its own mumming ortipteers play, in which Father Christ-mas plays a slightly more prominentpart than in many of the plays. Itopens with the usual entrance speechfrom Father Christmas, and then theoddly named Mince Pie has a fightwith St. George.

The former is killed, and FatherChristmas calls for a doctor who then

appears on the scene. Father Christ-mas bargains with him, and eventuallythe doctor gives in to the extent of re-ducing his fee by one farthing. Thedoctor then exclaims:

'I have a little bottle by my side,The fame of which spreadeth

far and wide,The stuff therein is called

Hallecumb pain.It will rise the dead to life again-

It will cure theHipsey Pipsey Paulsey

and the gout, Painsinside and pains out.

Drop a drop on the poor man's nose.Arise, young man,

and show the gentle folks around,What a noble doctor there is to be found.'

The very abbreviated play endedwith a further character, Little SaucyJack, makes this closing speech:

'Incomes I little Jack,With all my family at my back,

Christmas comes but once a year,And when it comesit brings good cheer:

Roast beef, plum pudding and mince pies,Who takes all these things better than I?

Christmas fairs makes us dance and sing,And money' purseis a capital thing.'

The next day, to my delight, I tracked down the 1876 location ofthe Holt and Hopkins homes in Carl Junction. At least one ofwhich is still occupied. The others were back too far off theroad to see. A stranger stopped and helped me find them. Hehad lived there all his life and knew immediately where to takeus! To get to this area, take Fir Road off Rt 171. The blocks justbefore and just past Black Cat Road, on the left, comprise Sec-tions 19 and 20, TWP 44N, Range 7W. Across the street fromthe Sherwood Cemetery (on the right), is a home I believe mighthave been David HOPKINS' home, pictured below. Perhaps the

You might notethat the 1876plat map indi-cates theHOLTS, HOP-

Oswego, Labette County, Kansas

A few trips to the Joplin Genealogical Society at the Joplin Li-brary rounded out my whiz bang search in Jasper County. Iwas on to my focus of the trip, the MCDANIELS in Owego, Kan-sas. This small town is about 45 miles east of Joplin, so we did-n't have to change motels. That was a relief!

My Summer Vacation (cont'd)(Continued from page 2J

Tornado damage from a July storm wasquite severe and folks were still cleaning upthe mess. The Oswego Historical Museumhad lost its roof and sustained serious wa-ter damage to its huge collection of arti-facts. This didn't detain local genealogists, who were hard at work handling researchfor numerous queries and a massiveamount of cleanup!

I could have stayed there several days, butonly had two afternoons. Fortunately thefilm reader wasstill working(though they hadlost one of thecomputers) and Iwas able to re-view local col-umns in the townnewspaper. While I didn't findanything earthshattering, I was able to confirm my specu-lations about the Jesse and Amelia HOLTMCDANIEL family. I was also able to iden-tify a few more surnames attached to thisfamily. I am still not anywhere near pin-pointing present day descendants, but I amcloser!

I have discovered that one of JesseMCDANIEL's parents was a Quaker. Hisfather, Elias MCDANIEL married PhebeBOSWELL in a civil service resulting inPhebe being removed from the Chester-field Quaker Meeting, Athens County,Ohio. Elias is reputed to have died in theCivil War. He appears to have served withhis son, Jesse, in the 33rd Regular IllinoisInfantry Volunteers. I have found no traceof Elias or Phebe after 1850.

Amelia HOLT MCDANIEL's parents, Johnand Malona ROBINSON HOLT lived in Neo-desha, Wilson County, Kansas. Both ofthem were faithful workers in the Method-ist Episcopal Church and are buried therein the churchyard. John's obituary notes,7t is not necessary to make any eulogiesregarding this devout and faithful servantof God, who since 1871 has been a con-

stant resident of this community. A moresimple minded, meek and humble followerof the principles Lord Jesus Christ it falls tothe lot of few people to know (NeodeshaRegister, 22 March, 1895)." In the yearfollowing his wife's death (9 March 1894)he had little interest in life. When she de-parted for glory he felt that there was noth-ing more here for him to live for andthough accepting the decree of Providencewith humble submission he yet longed forthe summons."

Linn, Osage County, Missouri

On Wednesday, Momand I headed for Linn,Osage County, Missouriwhere my Grandfather,Charles Blodgett HOP-KINS, was born andraised to the age of 12.His grandfather,George Hopkins, set-tled outside of Linn

near a crossroads town called Fredericks-burg. I hoped to find the burial site forGeorge Sr. and his wife, Jane Knill.

I was to start historical delving at the Ze-wicki House, home of the Osage CountyHistorical Society. Mary Lou SCHULTE hadput me in touch with Roberta SCHWINKE, afellow historian living in Section 1, Town-ship 44N, Range 7W, where I suspected thecemetery was lo-cated. I had anappointment laterin the afternoonwith Roberta.

I decided to reviewsome newspaperarticles, but washaving troublegetting the ma-chine working.Another womanarrived to do re-search and hap-pened to hear that I was looking for HOP-KINS information. It just so happened thatshe, Betty Chillington, had been puttingtogether the letters about the town of Linnthat an E. HOPKINS had sent to the Linn

newspaper in the early 1900's. It was aserendipitous moment for us!

E. Hopkins was, of course, Ebenezer HOP-KINS, youngest son of George and JaneKNILL HOPKINS and my great-great uncle. His letters back to his hometown are price-less remembrances of small town livingduring the Civil War and earlier. I was ableto fill Betty in on my family history andmore about the man who's letters she hadcompiled.

My Mom and I met Roberta SCHWINKE atthe old church on Rt. 244 and "J". Fromthere we traveled together to meet withAndrew WOLF, whom she was interview-ing for a book on the history of the localMethodist Church.

It was to be a magical afternoon! Andrewand his wife welcomed us into their homeat Morrison Station. We sat around theirkitchen table for a couple of hours listeningto the stories this amazing 86 year old mantold of people who had lived in the areaover the past 100+ years. Tales of his youthand memories of various other families, customs and events.

Thank goodness Roberta had her tape re-corder going! We could have recordedhim for days, but we wanted to go out tothe former HOPKINS farm, once owned byMr. Wolfs father. Olan STEMME now ownsthe farm. He doesn't live there, but grows

soy and runs cattleon the land.

Andrew accompa-nied us to thecemetery I sus-pected might bethe HOPKINS fam-ily plot. Head-stones were nolonger visible inthe tangled under-growth. Mr. Wolfexplained thatwere of a soft na-

tive sandstone. There were no remaining

The burial site is named the "Miller Ceme-tery" in the County cemetery book. It liesjust past the original hand bricked spring, between two smallstreams. Cedar treesonce surrounded thesmall glade. Mosthave been cut down.

Thickets of poison ivyand overgrownbushes blocked explo-ration, but still visiblewere the remains ofan 80 foot hand hewnbarn built by the Hop-kins family. The weath-ered, rough-hewn beams are enormous.Mr. Wolf said it was once a magnificentstructure. Editor's NoteIn between taking some trips, beingsick and having a great summer, Ihave managed to build a new websiteat: ihttp://users.c nspercl.tlet/liteskye.

I wish I had done it years ago! Ithought it would be a huge and mind-

bogglingtask. It actu-ally turnedout to bequite easy. And fun. Iwill probablybe revising it

for the rest of my life. I hope one dayto have the newsletter accessible viathe website. It would save time andmoney.

I would be happy to host links and orpages for any of you who would likesome of your research online. I hopeyou all will take a visit and see what Ihave done so far. I decided not topost all my research as so much seemsto get "lifted" and used in money-making schemes. I would rather shareit with those who are related andleave it at that.

I sure would like some submissionsfrom those of you that have not yetcontributed an autobiography or re-search. I always feel guilty when I fillthe issue with mostly what I am work-ing on! Though I hope you enjoy itanyway. Please consider sendingsomething along for the next issue.

This issue will be going out to quite afew new people. I gathered addresseseverywhere I went and hope to trackdown a couple of Holt and Hopkinsdescendants in Missouri.

BTW, did I mention in the last newslet-ter that Jan DABSON has almostpinned down our Henry HOLT as thechild of Richard and Olive HOPKINSHOLT? (See article below). We doneed a bit more documentation, but allis pointing in that direction. Whichmakes a double connection betweenthe lines ... All for now.

200-- . a.

Holt DiscoveryNew information is surfacing re-

garding the English roots of the HOLTFamily line. Jan DABSON went to theHampshire Record Office in Portsmouth,Hampshire, England. While there shelooked at Richard HOLT's will, husbandof Olive HOPKINS HOLT.

She unfortunately didn't manageto get all of it, but what she did find isthat he was a Blacksmith and he leftthe bulk of his estate to his son HENRY,also a Blacksmith. The will notes Rich-ard was of Shidfield, Droxford Parishand mentions some of his daughters.

The editor's reading of the Drox-ford Manor records notes an entry on6/8/1861 to John HOPKINS with thefollowing note, "Indenture dated 15April 1861 made between ThomasHOLT, Mary HOL T, George HOL T, JohnHolt, and Harriett HOLT of the one partand Harman ADAMS and Eliza AnnADAMS his wife (formerly Eliza AnnHOLT Spn) of the other part is involved,0.2.6 (tax amount?), I 15 July 1825,Harman Adams & us, M 1871." I don'tknow what it all means, but indicates aconnection with the Richard HOLT land, which earlier passed to Olive HOLT.

No christening records have beenlocated for Henry, who gave his age as50 in the 1850 Ohio Federal Census. This conflicts with the supposition thatOlive had him around 1790. By 1800,

10 she would have been 53 years old.

Young Emily, granddaughter of Donald

Blunden was knocked down by a car on

Friday night, 8 October, at 6.55 pm. She

and mom, Angie, were rushed to Adden-

brooks Hospital. Emily had many mor-

phine injections and 3 times into surgery, they were so concerned about infection.

Emily had the front half of her foot am-

putated. You can guess how devastated

the whole family is and the "rallying of

the troops" is just as a perfect family

should be. Poor Angie cracked up at the

hospital and just broke her heart The

three children are her and husband's life, their WORLD. Sadly you can cushion

them as much as you like — but it's

that one moment" and your world is

torn apart.

Emily had just won her gold for dancing.

From all reports, this little one will be

back to dancing in no time.
