General information about Almansa

The town of Almansa, part of the province of Albacete, is known for its spectacular castle, built on top of the great boulder that crowns the city. Almansa Castle, among the most well-preserved in the province of Albacete, presides over and defines the tangle of alleyways that comprise the old quarter and is considered a Historical Artistic Site. Besides its castle, Almansa is also known for its Moors and Christians Festivals and for the famous Battle of Almansa. In the area around the town, the Battle of Almansa was fought on April 25, 1707, as part of the War of the Spanish Succession between Philippe of Anjou (the Bourbonic armies) and Archduke Charles of Austria (the Hapsburg armies). The Bourbonic armies

achieved a decisive victory, allowing for Philip V's accession to the Spanish throne. On April 25, 2007, the commemoration of the Tri-Centennial of the Battle of Almansa was held with various activities that will be repeated throughout the year, such as visits to the battleground, among others. Special landmarks in Almansa: The Castle, La Asunción Church, Las Agustinas' Convent, Counts of Cirat Palace and the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Belén (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Bethlehem).
