Dear Friends:

In the book, “Let Your Life Speak,” Quaker author Parker Palmer speaks of the power of one individual in this world and the phenomenal force created when individuals come together for a common cause.

As donors, and as individuals who let their lives speak, we thank you for your belief in the mission of Lutheran Homes Society and for supporting the fulfillment of this mission. As generous contributors to LHS, you come from all different backgrounds and walks of life. As a donor, you meld together with other donors, to share your high regard for, and belief in, the mission and ministry of LHS.

This dramatic and dynamic power of all donors provides tremendous possibilities to LHS residents and service recipients; you allow their lives to be given love, hope, reassurance, and new possibilities.

When you write your checks and send them to the LHS Foundation, your life is speaking: It is telling a story of someone who cares enough to provide our 3,000 plus residents with what they cannot provide for themselves. It is the privilege of the LHS Foundation to accept these contributions and to act on your behalf through the distribution of all donations as you have designated.

To fulfill our responsibilities as a Foundation, it is imperative that accountability and transparency are paramount. In this report, we share with you Foundation highlights of the past year, your stories, and financial reports of donations and of the Foundation endowment funds.

We look forward to a continued partnership as we seek to build a solid future for accomplishing the mission of Lutheran Homes Society.

Youngbauer Scholarships AwardedThe LHS Foundation annually awards four $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from Clay, Cardinal Stritch, Lake, and Anthony Wayne high schools: high schools that are located in the vicinity of LHS ministries. The students receiving these awards plan to pursue further education in the fields of human services, nursing, ministry or education.

This scholarship, named for Lawrence and Adele Youngbauer is a legacy to their interest in promoting the education of youth, particularly those who wish to pursue professions that assist others and change lives.

Megan Goeckerman Clay High School

Megan will be attending the University of Toledo, majoring in nursing. She plans on becoming a neonatal nurse. “I’ve always loved helping others as well as taking care

of babies.”

Renee Mata Lake High School

Renee will be attending Mercy College, majoring in pediatric nursing.

“I love children and I want to help them when they are sick.”

Molly O’Reilly Anthony Wayne High School

Molly will be attending the University of Findlay, majoring in occupational therapy. “I love helping people and

knowing that I helped an elderly person get back into their daily routine would

be really rewarding.”

Alexa McCourt Cardinal Stritch Catholic High SchoolAlexa will be attending Bluffton University,

majoring in middle childhood education. She wants to teach middle school math and language arts. “I love learning and a want to share it with as many others as I can.”

Annually, the four agencies of Filling Home of Mercy, Napoleon; Lutheran Social Services of NW Ohio; Luther Home of Mercy, Williston; and Lutheran Homes Society join together to sponsor this event. Eighty-five golfers enjoyed the event in July of this past year at Stone Ridge Golf Course in Bowling Green.

Proceeds from the event are equally split among the agencies. The proceeds are then used to fund the various needs of their agencies. Lutheran Homes Society’s portion of the 2014 proceeds was $3,247. The funds were directed to the LHS Charitable Care Annual Fund, which helps to fulfill the unfunded operational needs and charitable care needs of LHS ministry residents.

Northwestern Ohio Four Lutheran Agency Charitable Golf Outing

Because of the generosity of many corporate and nonprofit sponsors, the outing is a success each year and serves to fund important areas of each ministry.

Golfers are invited to participate in this event, regardless of their skill level. It is a scramble format. Additional golfers are always welcome. Contact [email protected] or call 419-861-4964 for information and registration.

Why Give to Lutheran Homes Society? Many donors celebrate a deep-felt connection with Lutheran Homes Society. Perhaps it is a family member who is, or was, in one of the ministry’s facilities. Perhaps the donor received care, or perhaps they know a friend whose mother, father, relative or child was helped through the programs and services of Lutheran Homes Society. Many donors have not personally experienced the care that LHS provides, but they give because they believe in the mission of Lutheran Homes and the lives that are transformed through this ministry.

The following stories have been shared by donors when donating:

JoyfulGIVINGPlease find a check enclosed in memory of my father to LHS Family & Youth. He

was born in Toledo. Due to the depression, he was placed in the Lutheran Childrens’ Home in east Toledo at the age of five where he lived for seven years. It was dad’s wish, upon his passing, that a portion of his estate be given the LHS Family & Youth ministry. Dad shared a biography he wrote with my eight brothers and sisters that said it was very important to share his experiences with us since, “My life at the orphanage shaped me into the man I am today.” He was able to share with us throughout his life the wonderful values he learned while at the Home. We honor LHS and our Dad through this donation.

This gift is in appreciation for the years of service and care you gave to my mother and father. My brothers and sister found that we could not care for them at home; there were too many health issues that we did not have the resources to address. Please pass on to all the caregivers, nurses and so many other staff members our thank you that our parents’ needs were addressed in such a professional and caring manner. We owe all of you so much. You are our unsung heroes.

Please find the enclosed donation in memory of my sister who was a resident of the Lutheran Homes at Wolfcreek extended care facility. She originally had an apartment at the residences next to the Wolfcreek facility. When she couldn’t take care of herself anymore, she was admitted to the extended care nursing facility. Thank you for all of the love and care shown to her. She was so thankful she was in that extended care.

Thank you to those who have chosen Lutheran Homes Society as their nonprofit of choice and have entrusted LHS with their contributions. Your donations allow LHS to provide hope, healing and restoration to the residents and care recipients we serve.

morning chores. Some boys would scrub down a flight of stairs, while others would scrub or wax and polish the floors.

Older boys would go to the farm to feed the livestock and collect the eggs. The older girls would help the cook with breakfast while others would be making sandwiches for the high school lunches. After chores were done, we would get ready for school and do any last-minute homework.

After school we were free to play until supper. On Saturday mornings, all high school boys would go to the farm. We cleaned out the chicken coop, changed the bedding for the livestock, and made steer mash by grinding up corn and oats. The junior high kids were at church for catechism. Saturday afternoons were free time. Sundays were free all day after church. A lot of kids would go home for the day with family and friends. Since I was not from Toledo, I had no family to visit. I usually did the Sunday afternoon chores at the farm.

Every Donor Has a Story...

I entered the Lutheran Orphans’ Home in the summer of 1956, at a time in my life when everything was going south, beginning with the separation of my parents.

I was in 7th grade. After three weeks in the 7th grade, I was put back into the 6th grade. The home was divided into five departments: the big boys, the little boys, the big girls, the little girls, and the nursery. Miss Streib was my second mom.

A typical day, for me, at the orphanage was making my bed and getting dressed and then doing

Robert’s Story

Barb and Bob Fielitz

During summer time, all the big boys (12 and older) went to the farm. After picking berries and collecting the produce, we headed to the fields with our hoes. Each summer we would spend a day at East Harbor State Park and another day at Crane Creek State Park.

Each fall, we older boys climbed into the truck and went on “canning trips.” We traveled to many churches to pick up canned goods that were put up for us by the ladies’ groups of churches.

I was fortunate to have a place to go and have people who cared for me. It was not a job to them; it was a calling and way of life to these caregivers. I am extremely and eternally grateful and thankful.

We all have needs. My parents were at a point where they were unable to care for their own needs, so after an investigative search, we ended up at the Lutheran Memorial Home. There my parents, Eugene “Sonny” and Josephine “Josie” Vaughn, lived their final years in comfort, being well cared for by the wonderful staff. But the Lutheran Home was so much more than that; aside from caring for the needs of my parents, the staff took the time to care for the needs of my siblings.

With four children living outside of the state, sometimes the needs went beyond just caring for the residents, my parents. My sister, Diane, who is in Tennessee, was not able to do regular visits, but did call at least weekly. When she could not reach my parents, or sometimes to get confirmation or updates, Diane would speak with the caretakers, nurses, or the director herself, and the staff never failed to take the time to confirm and reassure my sister of my parents’ health and comfort!

For other family members, the need was contact. With other children in Florida, Colorado and Michigan, my mother’s visits were often by phone.  In the final months when my mother was unable to manage her own phone, the nurses and caretakers allowed my family to call the desk and the nurses, who had the portable phone, allowed my mother to have extended visits until the very end.

The Vaughn Family Story

Josie and Sonny Vaughn spent their final years in comfort at Lutheran

Memorial Home in Sandusky.

The Lutheran Memorial Home went beyond caring for the needs of my parents and family. They actually cared for the “wants” of my parents. The most important thing for my father was independence and my mother was to be pampered. Opposite ends of the spectrum? Yes, but the staff managed to give each what they wanted, whether it was allowing my father to have his car in the lot until he was over 90 and not driving, to having a small refrigerator in his room to keep lunch meat and ice cream at his disposal. They knocked and sat with my father like they were visiting him at home, yet I was never there when they did not check on my mother every 15 to 30 minutes. They even made sure they did her hair each Tuesday, including the week of her passing, keeping her looking, and, more importantly, feeling pretty!   My parents were blessed to live long, happy lives. They each died at the age of 94, and part of that blessing were their final years at the Lutheran Memorial Home with a caring, competent and professional staff. For that my family and I will always be appreciative.   Sincerely, Gil Vaughn

Source of Donations

Annually, the LHS Foundation receives contributions from approximately 95 of 170 member congregations and 10 nonmember congregations, in addition to individuals. Organizations have also generously provided direct monetary donations, as well as in-kind gifts or services. LHS is fortunate to have such faithful partners to assist in the fulfillment of the mission of LHS.

When contributing, there are donors who designate their donation to a particular fund* or ministry. We honor all such designations and ensure that all funds are directed to the selected ministry or program. All non-designated donations are directed to the LHS General Fund to be used for ministry non-budgeted needs as directed by the LHS Board of Directors. Designated donation amounts are directed 100% to the selected ministry or fund. All operational expenses of the Development Office are covered by the LHS Foundation.

*Special Funds include specific services and program funds provided by donors for des-ignated purposes. The LHS Foundation currently has 20 of such funds.

A Charitable Remainder Gift Annuity (CRGA) is a planned gift by a donor in which a major gift of cash or property is made to Lutheran Homes Society. The Lutheran Homes Society Foundation, which receives all gifts on behalf of LHS, places such donations into an annuity fund established within the Foundation’s Endowment. Payments from this fund are distributed to annuitants at intervals as directed by the initial annuity agreement. These payments to the donors are a fixed amount of income each year. When the donor dies, the remainder of the gift is utilized for the mission of Lutheran Homes Society. All gifts to the CRGA are backed by the full faith and assets of the LHS Foundation. Advantages of establishing a CRGA:

Establish at No Cost: The donor has no cost or fees associated with establishing a CRGA. There are no legal fees or LHS transaction fees. Within the initial agreement establishing the annuity, a calculation will be made for the income tax deduction of your contribution.

Gain an Immediate Tax Deduction: Contributions made to a CRGA are irrevocable. The amount of the deduction will depend on the type of asset being contributed, the amount contributed, the age(s) and number of income beneficiaries, and the current IRS discount rate for the month the gift is made.

Avoid Estate Taxes on Gift: All contributions to a Charitable Gift Annuity are separate from the donor’s estate and, therefore, are not subject to either estate taxes or probate.

Receive Income for Life: A CRGA allows the donor to give a contribution to LHS while simultaneously providing the donor with a lifetime income. The donor or donors will receive monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual payments for the duration of their lives.

2014 Third Annual Donor Appreciation Dinner Hope Restored: An Evening of Celebrating Donors Who Bring Hope to ManyThe LHS Foundation’s annual Donor Appreciation Dinner is held on the first Thursday evening of October. It is an occasion to thank those who currently support the mission and ministry of Lutheran Homes Society through the sharing of their resources. In addition, it is an evening to thank those who have committed a portion of their estate to ensure the long-term continuance of the LHS mission.

Nearly 160 current and potential donors gathered at Parkway Place in Maumee to celebrate each donor who has

made it possible for the ministries of LHS to assist both youth and matured adults in meeting needs and supplying resources that are vital to their health and renewed restoration.

Hope Restored

The attendees enjoyed the testimonials of speakers whose lives have been touched by the ministries of Lutheran Homes. The evening’s participants were able to dine while enjoying the music of Detroit musician, Daniel Meinecke.

Eleven corporate and individual sponsors underwrote the expenses for this event. The Foundation looks forward to the next Donor Appreciation Dinner as we celebrate donors, their generosity, and the essential role they play in the successful continuation of the LHS mission.

Thank you donors for the partnership we share to accomplish the mission of LHS!

Joy speaks in our lives in many ways: it is our relationships with our family, friends, and co-workers; it is how we engage with those we are not so familiar with; and it is how we respond to the many needs of those around us. We thank God for donors who joyfully support the mission of Lutheran Homes Society through the sharing of their resources. These gifts allow LHS staff to respond to the needs of the 3,000 plus residents and care recipients of Lutheran Homes Society.

Joyful Donors Sharing in the MissionDonors have enabled God’s healing and restorative touch to reach those in need. Donor contributions have enabled new programs to be developed, charitable care to be given to those residents who can not pay for their care, youth to be healed and given life skills, long-term care residents to have the continued care they need, and all residents to feel the hope that is provided through your donations.

Thank you for sharing the mission and for your joyful generosity in supporting it!

Lutheran Homes Society MISSION STATEMENT

As followers of Christ, we are called to do what lies within our power to share burdens that weigh upon the young and the old and to alleviate sorrow and misery in His name.

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

I Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)
