Dear Madison Families,

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone enjoyed their winter break and is refreshed and excited for 2017. I know the PTA is eager to continue the school year with many fun activities and special events!

A big thank you to Ellen King for chairing the Holiday Book Fair. It was a great success and we appreciate all your support.

If you have not yet joined our PTA, there is still time! Your dues go directly back to our students through the various programs we bring to the school! Becoming a member does not tie you down to coming to meetings or chairing events. We always welcome new faces to join us, however we recognize that not everyone’s schedule allows for such things. If you would like to support our Madison students with your membership, please send in $6 (individual) or $10 (family) in an envelope marked PTA Membership.

The next PTA Meeting is January 11 at 12:00pm in the Computer Lab. I am looking forward to seeing old faces and hoping for some new ones too!

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all our Madison Families. I hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing Christmas break spending quality time with your loved ones. May your new year be filled with good health and much happiness.

5Essentials Survey: Thank you to those who have taken time to fill out the online survey for us. Your survey results will help us continue to improve our communication and service to you and your children. We are proud to serve your families and want to make sure we can continue to build and foster relationships with our Madison families. If you have not yet taken the survey, you can find the link on www.qps.org under Quick Links on the right side in orange. We will use the results to drive future school improvement planning and goal setting. Your help is greatly appreciated. The deadline to fill out the survey is January 30. I took it for my children and each school survey took me less than 10 minutes.

Welcome to the 3rd Quarter: Our second quarter ended on Tuesday, December 20. Report cards are scheduled to go home on Friday, January 13. Please review goals with your child and communi-cate with your child’s teacher as needed to celebrate accomplishments and discuss any ways you can continue to help develop our children as great thinkers and leaders.

K-5 Transition Plan: The School Board has approved the plan to keep our K-3 set up in tact for another school year. This means Madison School will remain as it is with no boundary change for the 2017-2018 school year. Our current 3rd graders will move on to Baldwin School as 4th graders and then go to the new K-5 configuration as 5th graders. The Boundary Task Force is working to draw new boundaries for the opening of schools beginning the 2018-2019 school year. Stay tuned for any further updates.

Traffic: Thanks to all parents that are assisting us with keeping traffic flowing smoothly. We are reviewing with students and staff our safety procedures at each traffic area: Maine Street for Kinder-garten and first grade car riders and walkers, Hampshire Street for second and third grade car riders and walkers, and 25th street for our bus riders. Thanks for working with us to keep everything safe and efficient.

Have a GREAT start to the New Year.

Welcome to 2017! As we start the new year, let us try to keep it a healthy one! Please continue to remind your children to wash their hands and to keep their hands away from their “T” zone. Again, a reminder that washing hands is the number one defense against germs! And cover those coughs & sneezes!!

The cold winds of winter are sure to be blowing and it is very important to be sure that your child is dressed warmly every day! Please make sure that your child has a hat and gloves every day when leaving home! If you need assistance in providing this for your child, please contact me.

Some Kindergarten families will receive a free carbon monoxide detector courtesy of Adams County SAFE KIDS Coalition. Carbon monoxide is known as a silent killer as this poisonous gas has no odor. It may come from fuel burning appliances around the house. As of 2007, every Illinois home is required to have at least one carbon monoxide alarm within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping purposes, if the home relies on the burning of fuel for heat, ventilation or hot water (Public Act 94-741). Do you have Carbon Monoxide Alarms in your home?

Please remember that a child should not be at school if they have had a fever, vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours. If diagnosed with strep throat or pink eye, a child must be on an antibiotic for 24 hours before returning to school.

Here’s to a healthy & Happy New Year!

Jack will be unable to attend school until Sept 2017. We would like to send monthly care packages to Jack and his family to show them our support during this difficult time.

Donations must be in the school office by the 10th of each month. Thank you for your help.

Each grade level has been assigned a month:

Everyone wants their children to do well in school and one way to help your children is to help them build their vocabulary. Readers use knowledge about words to help them make sense of what they're reading. The more words a reader knows, the more he/she can comprehend.

Talking to and reading with your child are two terrific ways to help him/her hear and read new words. Conversations and questions about interesting words are easy ways to get new words into everyday talk.

Sharing a new word with your child doesn't have to take a long time: just a few minutes to talk about the word and then focus back on the book or your conversation. Choose which words to talk about carefully and only choose a one or two. The best words to explore with your child are ones that are common words adults use, but are less common for children to say or read.

Here are some hits to remember when introducing a new word to a child:

Provide a simple, kid-friendly definition for the new word.

Example: Predict means to guess what will happen using what you already know.

Provide a simple, kid-friendly example that makes sense to them.

Example: I predict you will have a good day at school tomorrow.

Encourage your child to develop his/her own example:

Example: What do you predict will happen tomorrow after school?

Keep your new words active within your house.

Over the next few days and weeks try to use each new vocabulary word in conversation.

Take the time to share new words and build your child's vocabulary. You'll be glad you did!!

Participating Product Lists: www.boxtops4education.com www.projectaplus.tyson.com Due to changes in the program, we no longer collect Campbell’s Labels.

HyVee Brand UPCs beginning with 75450

for taking the time to sort labels by type into plastic bags or envelopes.

for writing your child’s name and his/her teacher’s name on the outside.

for sending to school by March 1. Send each week or all at once!

We collect labels all year long! All labels should be properly trimmed (please do not send in a large portion of the box with each label). We cannot redeem expired box tops and they will not count toward your total. It would be a

tremendous help if the labels could be sorted by type. For example all box tops labels in one baggie and all Hy-Vee labels in a baggie. Then staple the bags together or place them in a larger bag. Label EVERY bag with your child’s name and teacher. Your help trimming and sorting is greatly appreciated!!!

For the month of JANUARY, all students who bring in

50+ labels will earn a coupon for FREE TOKENS at Aladdin’s

Castle inside Quincy Mall! Continued from December due to the short month.

We will be holding monthly contests this year!! All labels that are sent to school (excluding 500 Club) will count toward that month’s contest to earn prizes for your student! There will also be a GRAND PRIZE for the classroom who brings in the most labels by March 1st!
