How to leverage on Big Data in South African Innovation

Panelists: Paul Ssali from EWB UP, Jacob Masingi founder of the MEMT Group and Dr Vukosi Marivate from CSIR.

● We need to learn to start from the basics - Paul Ssali● Companies are improving their productivity by crunching and

analysing data - Dr Vukosi● We must start educating people about #BigData & how to use it so

we can progress our country● Understand what the needs are● “It’s about us being able to process the data”● Machine Learning: You need data to be able to find the patterns● Recent Big Data success story: How cities are using Big Data to

make them more smart.

Hack4Water#ArduinoDaySA#ArduinoDaySA

As part of the national Hack4Water challenge, a water challenge was integrated into Arduino Day. Hack4Water is championed by Code4SA.

Participants brainstormed and presented their ideas for Hack4Water.

Videos were made and teams are encouraged to use the videos to enter the challenge.

6 solutions came out.

Smart TapsDetecting the flow of water to determine any leakages. The smart tank has sensors to also determine the flow level. Saving water by alerting out-flow.

DEE E-TEAMWater management system that allows helps with water reusability by purifying water from household appliances.

Water HackA smart tank system that will compute and provide water supply per need or use.

IRIS Utilises the Internet Of Things (Weather monitoring), Soil Water Sensors, Data optimum water usage, IRIS is a continually live learning system.

SmartWaterTankDetecting the depth of a tank, availability of water and the ability to toggle. Water flow will be controlled in the toilet, sink or in a bath tab.

LiveToCodeReal-time data monitoring (Water usage), Safe tank, Intelli-pipe. Notification through Web-based and Mobile app Access to limit daily usage of water

SkateHacks#ArduinoDaySA#ArduinoDaySA

SkateHacks is an IoT and Big Data by Geekulcha and the Northern Cape provincial government to attract more young people into Science and Technology through skateboarding.

Innovators were challenged to come up with ideas of making skateboards smart and cool.

Best idea will be supported with tools and an opportunity to test/exhibit at the Skateboarding World Championship.

Data EmpireCollecting skate data on force impact exerted on the body during skating for safety research and design of the shock absorber solution.

Super SkateDetecting soil moisture, the solution will be integrated with wireless headphones. Will have a vibrator/alarm to inform of encounter.

Stunts HelpHelping skaters by putting LEDs that shows you where to step when doing the tricks. Interactive learning.

The GeekStarsBluetooth Skateboard: detects obstacles (rocks, pathways, cars). Detects the speed you are going at and alerts you when you are over the limit.

PRO-GEEZSKAPP TRICK: It’s a rubber pouch that will cover the board and help the skater to perform tricks

Safety SkateEquipped with vibration sensors for people have hearing problems, it will bring about safety check

Skate LocationHelping determine safe places for skating.

Skate CamFor learning purposes, this solution equips a skateboard with cameras to be able to show you where you went wrong.
