Eighteen Victoria College adult education students received their GED certificates during a ceremony on July 16 at the Leo J. Welder Center for the Performing Arts.

VC President Dr. Da-vid Hinds welcomed the graduates and guests to the event. VC Adult Education Director Tiffany Johnson recognized the students, who were presented their certifi-cates from VC Testing and Assess-

ment Director Donna Rodriguez.“Congratulations to the gradu-

ates for your hard work and dedi-cation,” Hinds said. “It takes fam-

ily, friends, faculty and staff to get you to the point where you are. It

also takes an internal drive to do something you want to accomplish for yourself. We’re very, very proud of all of you.”

City special runoff early voting ends August 23; Election Day is August 27

The city of Victoria special runoff election for the unexpired term of council member district 1, Emett Al-varez, will be held on Saturday, Au-gust 27, 2016. Candidates in the run-off election will be Rafael Ricky De La Garza, III and Lucy Herrera.

Vote Centers will be used at the fol-lowing locations: Hopkins Elemen-tary, Victoria County Courthouse, Trinity Episcopal Church, Pattie Dod-son Public Health Center, Shields El-ementary School, Dudley Elementary School, and FW Gross Elementary School. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and a photo ID is required for this election.

All registered voters in council member district 1 are eligible to vote in this election. You did not have to vote in the July 23rd election to vote in this election. The voting precincts are: 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 34 & 35.

Early voting polls will open from 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays until Tues-day, August 23, 2016.

Two days are set aside for 12 hour voting. The Health Center will open on Friday, August 19th and Tuesday, August 23rd from 7 am to 7 pm.

Early Voting by mail applications will be accepted through the mail until Tuesday, August 16th. All voters who received a ballot in the mail for the July 23rd election

My journey began in May when I filed as a candidate for Victoria City Council, District 1.

Today, I find myself in a runoff election. Along the way, I have met incredible people and for the most part my role has been listen-

ing to constituents concern(s) and issue(s). I believe it is the diversity of its people that makes the Victo-ria community exceptional.

In my last column, I mentioned I had the opportunity to serve on the City’s Planning Commission, and, as a result of Plan 2035, I am ever mindful of our commu-

nity’s needs. Plan 2035 serves as a guide, with a set of goals that sets the framework for the future with focus areas including:

• Land Use and Development• Mobility• Growth Capacity and Manage-

ment• Economic Opportunity• Recreation and Amenities

It is hard to imagine what the fu-ture holds. For me, Victoria never stops; it is full of opportunities and has a great story to tell.

• Victoria will continue to build a community that offers big-town amenities in retail, medical ser-vices, education, and affordable housing.

• The expanding population will increase demands for recreational opportunities.

• The growing population will result in more housing and infra-structure needs.

• Water will become the oil of the 21st century and diminishing aquifers will cause

major shifts in water storage ca-pacities.

Victorians desire a simplified city government, one that shares by keeping the community in-formed. I will explore an innovat-ing approach to use technology to create a Your TAX Dollars At Work website to provide a variety of information to residents. In a quick snap shot residents would be able to see where revenues come from, how money is budgeted to the various departments and where expenditures are going. By detail-ing how and where funding is re-ceived and distributed, residents

are able to see how the city is fis-cally maintained.

The University of Houston-Victoria has big plans for expan-sion and I want to work to ensure the city grows in a way that will generate a higher education at-tainment level in the community, while also providing opportunities for economic growth.

I am a champion of people and for many years have expanded my focus to the community.

I have am optimistic view tem-pered by reality. I care a great deal about what goes on in Victoria from the perspective of a taxpayer. It is imperative for the Council to

keep its focus on the fiscal respon-sibility on serving the needs and interests of the people that live and do business in this city.

There is still much more to do. As a council member, I will help build on our successes and con-tinue to deliver real results for our community.

I would be honored to have your support and ask for your vote in the upcoming August 27th elec-tion. With your help, let’s keep Victoria moving in the right direc-tion and leading the way. I look forward to serving the interest(s) of District 1.

• Improving areas of recreation like the Riverside Park and the Guadalupe River for our families to enjoy.

• Finally, making sure your tax dollars are spent carefully and wisely.

Our community faces new chal-lenges and many obstacles every year. I will work cooperatively and amicably with council members and city management to resolve these issues.

Together, we will make Victoria a great place to live, work and en-joy. This is our city.

Mule Deer back to assist UHV athletics

Ten years ago, the University of Houston-Victoria took the giant step of introducing collegiate ath-letics back to Victoria.

From the successes the Jaguars have experienced on the field to success in the entertainment busi-ness, UHV fans will have an op-portunity to relive a touch of both on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at the “A Night for the Jaguars” fundrais-ing event as comedian Gary Mule Deer makes a return engagement to highlight event.

Mule Deer’s unique comedy and music show will kick off the 10-year anniversary of UHV athlet-ics at the special fundraising gala which will be held at the Victoria College Emerging Technology Complex (7403 Lone Tree Road).

The special night gets under way at 6 p.m. with cocktails and a silent auction with dinner served at 6:30 p.m. A short program with a live auction begins at 6:45 p.m., with Mule Deer taking center stage with his 7:30 p.m. performance.

Sponsorships and individual tickets for the event are still avail-able on a limited basis. Sponsor-ships range from $500 to $5,000

and anyone interested in being a sponsor can contact UHV Athlet-ics Director Ashley Walyuchow at 361-580-5524.

“This is a great opportunity for the Victoria community to sup-port UHV athletes as well as get a chance to meet with athletes, coaches and enjoy a few laughs,” said Walyuchow.

Mule Deer’s unique style has set him apart as a one-of-a-kind enter-tainer. He is no stranger to Victo-ria, having performed for the UHV athletic fundraiser in 2011 as well as performing on numerous occa-sions during the annual Bluebon-net Youth Ranch benefit.

He entertains regularly in Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Atlantic City and Reno, as well as on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. He has also performed on every major concert

stage in the country and made over 350 television appearances, in-cluding “The Tonight Show” and “The Late Show with David Let-terman.”

He was once roommates with comedian Steve Martin, who calls Mule Deer one of the funniest men alive.

“Your’re the greatest, the funni-est…always were,” said Martin.

Mule Deer hopes to bring a little excitement to the event to help raise funds for a successful UHV athletic program that includes baseball, golf, softball and soccer.

The baseball and softball pro-grams begin their 10th year of competition. The baseball pro-gram has compiled a 243-201 re-cord under the guidance of head coach Terry Puhl, while the soft-ball program is 309-144 under the leadership of head coaches Keri Lambeth and Lindsey Ortiz.

The baseball program won two Association of Independent Insti-tutions Conference titles in 2009 and 2010, while the softball team claimed A.i.i. titles in 2009 and 2013, while winning the Jaguars’ first Red River Athletic Confer-ence regular season title this past season.

The men’s and women’s golf program and the men’s and wom-en’s soccer programs begin their seventh year of competition.

The women’s golf program advanced to the NAIA National Championships in 2015 and sent an individual player (Heather Shake) to the national champion-ships in 2014, while the men’s program sent an individual player (Vance Edwards) to the national

championships in 2013. Brian Williamson has served as head coach for both programs for the past six years.

The soccer programs have con-tinually experienced improve-ments each season and are coming off their best-ever seasons in 2015 where the women’s team posted a 12-5-1 record and the men a 12-

4-1 record. Each team has earned three postseason appearances in their first six years of competition under head coach Adrian Rigby.

“The funds raised from the event will go to help support nearly 150 student-athletes who participate on a yearly basis in the UHV ath-letic program,” said Walyuchow.

Improving our community one party at a time

Yes, it’s that time again; time to start thinking about National night Out and seriously consider having a party.

Why, you ask?To encourage police/commu-

nity partnerships, promote crime prevention efforts, build neighbor-hood camaraderie and let criminals know that you’re taking a stand against crime; of course. Plus, it’s a lot of fun.

Introduced in 1984 as “Amer-ica’s Night Out against Crime”, National Night Out was created specifically to help reduce crime in our communities. Then, citizens were asked to show their support by turning on their porch lights and participate in a symbolic front porch watch. 2.5 million People in 400 communities across 23 states were involved in this first event.

Fast forward to today and Na-tional Night out has turned into a nationwide celebration involving events that include block parties, barbeques, parades, visits from

first responders, youth events and safety demonstrations, all orga-nized by folks who are concerned about the safety and wellbeing of the communities in which they live.

National Night Out is now rec-ognized by almost 40 million peo-ple in over 16 thousand communi-ties throughout all 50 states, U.S. Territories, Canadian Cities and Military bases around the world.

Although for the rest of the world, National Night Out is cel-ebrated on the first Tuesday in August, Texas has its own date which is now looming on the ho-rizon. The first Tuesday in October is recognized as Texas’s National Night Out. This year it’s October 4thth.

The Victoria Police Department Crime Prevention Unit is asking residents to participate in this great city wide event. Last year we had 44 registered parties within Victo-ria, this year we’d like to see even more. You can have as large or as small parties as you want. You can have a huge party, block off a

street and invite the whole neigh-borhood or have a more intimate affair with just a few friends over, much like the original front porch watch. The choice is up to you and your imagination (within reason, of course).

The Crime Prevention Unit of the Victoria Police Department will actually begin the festivities a week early with a Community Safety fair and National Night Out kickoff party at the Victoria Com-munity Center. First responders, military and local community or-ganizations will all be represented with displays and informational booths while local youth provide entertainment. This year the kick-off party is on Saturday Sept 24th between 11am and 3pm and prom-ises to be quite an event.

Take a stand against crime, meet your neighbors and make this year’s National Night Out better than before.

If nothing else, it’s a wonderful excuse to have a party on a Tues-day.

When Jim Higgins steps into his role as the next University of Houston-Victoria Faculty Senate president, he plans to focus on maintaining an open dialogue be-tween the university’s faculty and administration.

“It’s essential that we constant-ly work to find common ground,”

said Higgins, an assistant profes-sor of history. “UHV is a grow-ing school, and we have to have an involved faculty leadership if we want this institution to suc-ceed. We’ve got to keep the lines of communication open between the administration and faculty so we can find the best situation for

everyone.”The Faculty Senate advocates

for the UHV faculty in the univer-sity’s decision-making process. It also serves as a sounding board for faculty members to share their ideas about details the administra-tion should consider. As part of this goal, the Faculty Senate president sits on UHV boards and commit-tees such as the President’s Cabi-net and the Academic Council.

Higgins officially will transition Monday from his current position as vice president into the president post. He is taking the reins from Beverly Tomek, also an assistant professor of history. She will move into the role of past president.

Tomek first recruited Higgins to UHV. He met Tomek when he was working on a research article for publication. Tomek was the edi-tor for the journal publishing the article, and she knew his disserta-

tion professor from when Higgins earned his doctorate at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.

Now, one of the first topics the Faculty Senate will need to ad-dress is the search for a new pro-vost, Higgins said.

“We want someone with a strong presence and top-notch qualifi-cations,” Higgins said. “Faculty members need someone they can depend on and work with as we keep pushing toward excellence. The provost will be key in help-ing ensure UHV continues to be a strong university.”

Higgins also wants to help fac-ulty members in Katy have their voices heard. The university’s programs in Greater Houston are transitioning to a new Katy loca-tion this fall, 2002 W. Grand Park-way N. During that transition, and as the Victoria campus continues to grow, Higgins wants to help en-sure that all opinions are heard and needs are met.

“I want to see UHV move for-ward, and I know all of the faculty are absolutely committed to that,” he said. “Above all, we want to make sure we produce top-notch graduates.”

Many UHV faculty members have lived in Victoria for a long time, Higgins said. They are part of the community, and their in-volvement outside the university also creates a commitment to im-prove and help the community UHV serves.

“The UHV Faculty Senate plays an essential role in university gov-ernance, ensuring that decision making is based on a full exami-nation of issues and alternatives,” UHV Interim Provost Don Smith said. “The Senate represents the voice of the faculty, who are, of course, primarily responsible for carrying out the university mis-sions of teaching and research –

contributing to the knowledge of students and to the advancement of knowledge in the various fields of study and inquiry.”

My Brother Veterans, the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) are honored and dedicated to servicing our Veterans and their families.

Today, we will start all over with old and new information on VA Benefits that our honorably discharged Veterans have earned and deserve for their service to our County.

Let’s touch on why veterans (old and recent) are not applying or even checking on the VA benefits that they and/or their families are eligible for:

The “old” vet was never prop-erly informed of his/her eligibil-ity for benefits. Back in the day, vets would serve and would re-turn home to a wife and family and the first priority was to find a job to support their family or help their parents (if not married). Some barely knew of the GI Bill and would take advantage of the opportunity to get an education. Some have used it to get a loan for a home. Little did they know that there were many other important benefits that they could be eli-gible for depending on the nature of their service and circumstances

surrounding their active service whether in combat or not.

As time went by, it became ap-parent that the veterans needed to be informed of such benefits. These efforts were initiated by the formation of Veteran Organiza-tions like the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. These organizations took their voices and concerns to their State and Congressional Representatives. They eventually, with persistence, obtained a voice in Washington for the rights of the veterans.

What about the recent veter-ans?? Well, they are much more aware of some of the benefits they are eligible for. The Veteran Ser-vice Officers are finding out that even the recent veterans don’t ful-ly know the extent of their benefits and the benefits that their depen-dants might be eligible for.

Let’s look at just some of the benefits that go unnoticed… 1) Burial benefits, 2) Compensation, 3) Pension, 4) Home Loans, 5) Medical Health System, 6) Coun-seling (PTSD, Marriage, Thera-py), 7) Administrative help to file for benefits (DAV, Texas Veteran Commission, County Vet. Reps.),

and 8) Home adaptation for veter-ans with special needs and the list goes on and on.

I ask that all Veterans should be proactive in visiting a local Vet-eran Service Office and to find out about the benefits that they and their families may be eligible for.

PLEASE, do not wait until an emergency appears to check into your benefits. When you procrasti-nate and an emergency arises, you will undoubtedly put your love ones in a very terrible bind when they have to look for your Mili-tary paper such as your Separation Form DD 214. Without that form, they will not be able to file on your

behalf. If you don’t know where your Military paper are, specially your DD214, we strongly advice that you look for them and let someone know where those im-portant papers are stored. “The biggest thing for us to get used to here is the heat,” said Price-Seeger, who moved to Vic-toria along with her husband, Rory, from Montana to begin her new job on June 8. “Thank heav-ens for air conditioning.”

Price-Seeger served as vice president of academic affairs at Dawson Community College in Glendive, Montana, before accept-ing the position at VC. Prior to her tenure at Dawson CC, Price-Seeger was a dean of instruction at Oxnard College and San Bernardi-no Valley Colleges in California, and an associate dean at Cascadia Community College in Bothell, Washington.

Price-Seeger said her biggest challenge of late at previous com-munity colleges was overseeing curriculum and program develop-ment amid constant budget cuts. “The recession changed a lot of things for higher education and taught us a lot of hard lessons,”

UHV partners with VC to offer new humanities concentrations

UHV partners with VC to offer new humanities concentrations

Students wanting to pursue ca-reers in art, music or drama will be able to follow their dreams starting this fall thanks to a partnership be-tween the University of Houston-Victoria and Victoria College.

UHV will offer three new con-centrations – art, music and the-ater – in the Bachelor of Arts in humanities. Many of the courses for these concentrations will be offered through VC. The students will be enrolled at UHV.

“Victoria College has some excellent facilities and talented faculty members,” said Andrew Baerg, a UHV associate profes-sor of communications and chair of the UHV School of Arts & Sci-ences Humanities and Arts Divi-sion. “This is an opportunity for our institutions to better serve students while also helping each other grow.”

The idea to partner and create more arts programs came up dur-ing a meeting between VC and UHV in January, Baerg said. VC already has arts and performance facilities, and UHV offers art courses in the UHV Center for the Arts, 204 N. Main St.

“The Victoria community shows an immense appreciation for the arts, and UHV and VC are excited to come together and offer these concentrations,” said Jeffrey Di Leo, dean of the UHV School of Arts & Sciences. “Through this partnership, our institutions will

be able to meet the needs of stu-dents interested in pursuing the arts while also finding more ways to connect with our community.”

The programs will begin with lower-level courses in each of the concentrations. More courses will be added as the concentrations grow and develop, said Jonathan Anderson, a VC music professor and Fine Arts Department chair.

“This partnership is an exciting opportunity for both institutions to explore something new,” Ander-son said. “There’s a lot to explore, and any effort to start something new means there will be successes

and things that need to be reexam-ined. I’m looking forward to see-ing how these concentrations will take shape.”

The art concentration will in-clude courses taught by Cynthia Miller, UHV artist in residence, and ceramics courses taught at Victoria College. The music pro-gram will offer instruction in both vocal and instrumental music, and students will have the opportunity to participate in ensembles. The theater program currently is ori-ented around acting and introduc-tory theater, and there likely will

UHV counselor education program receives $2.5 million grant for student scholarships

Students who want to pursue a Master of Education in clinical mental health counseling at the University of Houston-Victoria could have the cost of their degree and other expenses paid for thanks to a federal grant.

The UHV School of Education, Health Professions & Human De-velopment recently was awarded a $2.5 million grant from the Health Resources & Services Administra-tion, part of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. The grant is intended to help students from underrepresented popula-tions earn their degrees. This in-cludes minorities, students from low-income families or first-gen-eration college students.

The funds will be paid out in an-nual increments of up to $633,765 over four years and will be used to offer scholarships to full-time stu-

dents pursuing a master’s degree in clinical mental health counsel-ing. These scholarships will cover students’ entire cost of attendance for two years.

“We hope this will bring in new students who wanted to pursue a graduate degree but couldn’t af-ford it or were waiting to save up money,” said Katherine Bacon, a UHV assistant professor of gradu-ate counselor education. “This grant will allow students to pursue their degrees full time and create more counselors.”

In addition to tuition and fees, the scholarships will cover books, living expenses, transportation and other costs of living for two years. The scholarships will be awarded based on financial need and dis-tributed among two groups of stu-dents two years apart, Bacon said. The deadline to apply for the first group of scholarships is Aug. 1.

“We want to be sure that stu-dents understand this is a limited-time offer,” she said. “Students can’t apply for and receive this scholarship anytime. If they miss this deadline, they will have to wait until fall 2018 when the next group of scholarships become available.”

Because the scholarships are need-based, not everyone will receive the same amount, Bacon said. If a student receives finan-cial aid from other sources, the scholarship will help fill the gaps. Students also can transfer up to 12 credit hours once the credits are

reviewed and approved.UHV offers the only school

counseling degree in the Victoria and Houston area accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Edu-cational Programs. The clinical mental health counseling degree currently is in the process of re-ceiving accreditation. In addition, UHV has partnered with the Mi-chael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston to of-fer a paid internship for students in the program.

“The graduate clinical mental health counseling program has helped train many area counsel-ors,” said Fred Litton, dean of the UHV School of Education, Health Professions & Human Develop-ment. “This grant will help us con-tinue offering an excellent educa-tion to even more students so they

can make a difference in the area of mental health.”

of a practicum or internship in an integrated behavioral health care field placement within a medically underserved community, and fin-ish the clinical mental health coun-seling program within two years.

The masters in clinical mental health counseling prepares stu-dents for counseling positions in various clinical settings, includ-ing integrated behavioral health centers, hospitals, Veterans Affairs centers, private counseling agen-cies, drug abuse centers, centers for counseling the elderly, child protective services, family coun-selling centers, business and in-dustry.

Helping teens succeed in a complex world

When did all teenagers become anxious, depressed and lose their ability to cope?

The truth is, in most cases, they didn’t.

“There is a tendency in our cul-ture to treat young people who are struggling as if there is something wrong with them,” says Jeffrey Leiken (www.leiken.com), Ado-lescence Expert, CEO of Evolu-tion Mentoring International and co-founder of HeroPath Interna-tional. “We send them to doctors, therapists and specialists who all try to figure out and ‘treat’ what is broken.”

Leiken tackles the problems that teenagers – and their parents – face in his new book, Adolescence Is Not A Disease: Beyond Drinking, Drugs & Dangerous Friends – The Journey to Adulthood.

“My methodology begins with the presumption that there is noth-

ing wrong with the teen, but there is a lot wrong with the current sys-tem” he says. “Instead, I focus on figuring out what they need that will help them thrive.”

Leiken, a San Francisco-based mentor and consultant, uses rela-tionship, advice, perspective guid-ance and learning about life to help teens and parents get through this challenging period.

“This is in stark contrast to the medical/clinical/assessment para-digm that dominates the youth de-velopment field and heavily influ-ences parents in their thinking and decision making – a system that is largely based on fear and pathol-ogy (illness),” he says.

“Each child is different. Each faces his or her own challenges. Rather than get overwhelmed by a dozen different ‘how-to-parent’ theories, parents only need to be-come the expert in what works in raising their own teens.”

That means parents need to un-derstand how to communicate and relate effectively with their chil-dren, and how to bring the right experiences, opportunities and learning that will best help their child to grow, Leiken says. This is based on who they are, and what their interests, strengths, talents, ambitions and challenges may be.

For example, Leiken says that eliminating choices that are not right for a teen is much more ef-fective than allowing them to keep all options open. “This will signifi-cantly increase the quality of their decision making,” he says.

Instead of helping adolescents to get into the best colleges, Leik-en recommends that parents help them find the program that works best for them, even if that means not going to college at all.

“Parents need to help them iden-tify their strengths and interests,” he says, “and to build a life that

FRUIT-AND-FIRE FLAT-IRON STEAKS2 stalks fresh lemon grass or 1 tablespoon finely shredded lemon peel ½ cup reduced-sodium soy sauce 1/3 cup bottled hoisin sauce 3 tablespoons lemon juice 4 cloves garlic, minced ¼ to ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper 4 boneless beef shoulder top blade (flat iron) steaks, cut 1 to 1¼ inch thick (about 1½ lb. total) ½ a peeled, cored fresh pineapple, sliced 2 nectarines, halved, pitted, cut in wedges 2 plums, pitted, cut in wedges 1 bunch green onions (about 8), trimmed

1. For marinade trim ends of lemon grass; halve lengthwise. Remove two or three layers of tough outer stalk. Remove tender inner stalks; wrap, refrigerate, and reserve to garnish grilled steaks. Finely chop 1 table spoon remain-ing lemon grass. In bowl combine

chopped lemon grass, soy sauce, hosin sauce, lemon juice, garlic, and crushed red pepper. Transfer ½ cup marinade to airtight con-tainer; refrigerate.

2. Place steak in large self-seal-ing plastic bag set in shallow dish. Pour remaining marinade over steaks; seal bag. Refrigerate 12 to 24 hours and turn occasionally.

3. Remove steaks from mari-nade; discard marinade. Let steaks stand at room temperature for 30 minutes.

4. For charcoal grill, place pine-apple slices, nectarines, and plums on rack over hot coals. Cover and grill 4 to 6 minutes, until fruit is lightly seared, turning once. Brush with refrigerated marinade the last 2 minutes of grilling. Transfer fruit to platter; set aside.

5. For charcoal grill, place steaks on rack directly over medi-um coals. Cover and grill 15 to 18 minutes for medium rare (145ºF); turning once and brushing with refrigerated marinade the last 2 minutes of grilling. Place green onions on rack over coals; grill

uncovered, 1 minute, turning oc-casionally. (For gas grill, preheat grill to medium-high. Place fruit on rack over heat. Cove and grill fruit. Reduce heat to medium. Grill steaks and onions as above.)

6. Slice steaks. Serve with fruit, onions, and reserved lemon grass. Serves 4.

SUMMER PORK CHOPS WITH CORN-MANGO SALSA 1/3 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons blackened steak seasoning 2 teaspoons garlic powder 1 large onion, thinly sliced 6 boneless pork loin chops, cut 1 -inch thick Corn-Mango Salsa Steamed green and yellow beans (optional)

1. For marinade, in a resalable plastic bag, combine oil, steak seasoning, and garlic powder; mix well. Add onion; mix well. Add chops; seal bag and turn to coat chops. Marinate in the refrigerator for 12 hours or overnight.

2. Drain chops; discard mari-nade. For a charcoal grill, grill chops on the rack of an uncovered grill directly over medium heat for 14 to 18 minutes or until done (160ºF), turning once halfway through grilling. (For a gas grill, preheat grill. Reduce heat to medi-um. Place chops on grill rack over heat. Cover; grill as above.) Serve chops with Corn-Mango Salsa and, if desired, green and yellow beans. Makes 6 servings.

3. Corn-Mango Salsa: Husk 2 ears fresh sweet corn and brush with olive oil, coating all sides. Grill corn on the rack of an un-covered grill directly over me-

dium heat until kernels are tender and just begin to brown, turning often. Remove from grill; cool. Cut kernels from ears. In a bowl, combine corn kernels; 1 medium mango, seeded, peeled, and finely chopped; ½ cup finely chopped

red sweet pepper; ¼ cup chopped sweet onion; ¼ cup fresh lemon juice; 2 tablespoons cooking oil; 2 tablespoons snipped fresh mint; 1 tablespoon snipped fresh cilantro; and ¼ teaspoon salt. Toss gently to mix.

Price-Seeger said. “It was very stressful and challenging, and a real milestone in my career as an administrator to work with faculty to basically save colleges.”

A main reason Price-Seeger pursued the position at VC was the economic stability of the region.

“I was very attracted to the state of Texas,” Price-Seeger said. “The reputation of the schools here is strong on a national basis and the reputation of the state, financially, is strong. All of those things make for a nice, stable environment for schools.

“Victoria College also enjoys good ties with the community. It has all the things you really want to see in a community college.”

Price-Seeger, who acquired a

master’s degree in education and a Master of Arts in organizational communication at Idaho State

University, along with a Bach-elor of Science degree at Southern Utah University, said she was also impressed with other VC adminis-trators.

“The leadership is critical for me because I report directly to the president,” Price-Seeger said. “The president’s vision and mine need to be in harmony. With Da-vid Hinds, you know what he is all about from the beginning. It’s a great opportunity to serve with somebody whose vision I can sup-port.”

Along with learning how to cope with South Texas summers, Price-Seeger said she has a simple mission at VC.

“I just want to help make a real-ly good college great, and see stu-dents succeed,” she said. “That’s my goal.”
