GeceKondoo // Recycling old traditions

Gece Kondu (literally: Landed overnight) defines Turkish informal dwelling. Born during the industrializa-tion period of the country, after 1946, these houses mimicking the Turkish rural habitat can be seen in the country’s urban areas. Despite their precarious constructive techniques, Gece Kondus are injecting several positive aspects into the urban texture: Allowing to lower classes to settle nearby economical nodes, creat-ing buffer areas and greener spaces in the dense fabrics. Moreover, Gece Kondus districts are usually the transition points for national migrants, moving from the economically devastated rural zones to the cities in the hope of a better future.


Homage to the 300.000 Recyclers in Turkey


As Gece Kondus, the recycling business in Turkey is also mainly informal. Studies estimate that there are around 300.000 recyclers in the country, riding around the cities with their carts, and selecting trashes. These recyclers are generally part of a hierarchically directed ‘’recycling gangs’’, with the boss as the owner of a truck allowing to transport the valuable trashes from the city to its outskirts, where they can be sold as raw material. Despite their informal character, these recyclers are allowing Turkish cities to be rated better than main European cities in terms of waste processing.

Unfortunately, the workers in this informal industry are usually exploited without any social rights. Furthermore, they are usually living in the Gece Kondus districts of the cities, where low income ru-ral migrants are settled.

With the recent urban renewal processes, and Disaster risk law voted by the Turkish government, these Gece kondu settlement are the target of massive urban operations, weakening once more the social conditions of the inhabitants, facing economic and ethnical exclusion.

Considering the fact that 7.000.000 dwellings are planned to be destroyed and rebuilt accordingly to criteria’s of earthquake resistance, in the frame of the disaster risk law during the next 20 years, the probability to face a boom in the amount of intro-urban migrants is more than a certainty.

The ‘’Gecekondoo’’ project is an urban utopia or an urban dream. ‘’Gecekondoo’’ is a research to create emergency dwelling units built of up cycled materials, collected by the recyclers.

‘’Gecekondoo’’ strains to develop quick and low cost sheltering solutions for the urban migrants and to offer a better income and social upgrade to all the hard working recyclers in Turkey, by offering them a platform for economical exchanges.

As Gece kondus, the ‘’Gecekondoos’’ are informal. They plug their selves in the urban cracks and existing infrastructures. They are smart urban parasites.

Moreover, Gecekondoo can become a fare trade process and an urban laboratory to develop the use of recycled materials in architecture.
