Camp Receives Grant from YSSA Thanks to the grant-writing efforts of camp volunteers Don Koehler and Larry Davis, the Board of Directors of the Youth Shooting Sports Alliance (YSSA) selected Camp Ondessonk to receive an in-kind grant of equipment and supplies for the 2015 Summer Camp season. The much-appreciated gifts included 5 cases of .22 target cartridges, 20 shooting glasses, and 3 firearms cleaning kits with a value of more than $1,500, according to Steve Miller, Executive Director of YSSA. The YSSA donation came on the heels of a decision to initiate construction of a new rifle range shooting and storage shelter. The project has been dreamt about for several years. Construction is being spearheaded by former camp staff member Norb Garvey and several

skilled volunteers. The old rifle range pavilion was dismantled in mid-March by members of the Springfield and Tri-State Lodge tribes. New construction will begin by mid-April with an anticipated completion date of mid-May 2015; just in time for summer camp. A portion of our project funding goal is still being sought by Ondessonk’s Board of Directors, who are currently focusing their fundraising activities on this project. If you are interested in giving, please contact a board member or Dan King. The Youth Shooting Sports Alliance (YSSA) was organized to address two important challenges regarding the recruitment and retention of new shooters: • Identify and support theneeds of successful and safe youth programs • Provide leadership in thedevelopment and promotion of family-friendly shooting range facilities to encourage continued participation in the shooting sports Camp Ondessonk is excited about these developments within our target sports program, and the continued support from volunteers and friends. Come see our new rifle range pavilion and equipment at the 2015 Open House on May 30, 2015!

The Director’s DeskBy Dan King When I returned for my third year as a camper I thought of myself as an expert on Camp Ondessonk. We camped nearby at Ferne Clyffe State Park, so our car was one of the first lined up on the camp road when the gate opened at 11 am on arrival day (it now opens at 1 pm). After a short picnic lunch at the Scenic Overlook picnic table near the Old Dining Hall, the registration process began and I was soon moving into my cabin. My parents and I parted when I finished my swim assessment. They were heading home. Once back in my cabin in the unit of Garnier, I became a little restless. It would be over an hour before our first scheduled activity - a unit meeting with our counselors to learn names, rules, and stuff like that. I knew all that stuff. Remember, I was an expert. As an expert on camp, I decided to go for a hike to Hogg’s Bluff. I’d been there on my exploration hike the previous year and I was certain it was just past the rifle range. I departed the unit without raising any attention from my Unit Leader. I walked across the Lake Echon Dam and made a left turn. Yes, I was alone. Camper supervision procedures were much more relaxed in those days than they are now. My hike led me to Hogg’s Bluff, a tall and mossy place surrounded by water on three sides. I climbed the footpath to the top and began to explore. The solitude of the Shawnee National Forest began to dominate my senses. I thought of the Native Americans that once walked there. According to my counselors from the summer before, the high bluff helped keep them safe from attack. I remembered learning that the depressions to the right as you top the bluff are gravesites. It didn’t take long before I encountered the spooky sensation that I was being watched by someone or something. I looked around more closely. The weight of my aloneness nearly made me faint. I was terrified. I was definitely not an expert. I ran down the footpath, turned toward camp, and sprinted up the cinder path to the safety of my counselors, other campers, and all of the parents still moving kids into cabins. It felt good to be in the presence of others. Camp Ondessonk is on the cusp of achieving another round of significant progress. After all these years, I am still not an expert. I do know, however, that our future must include “the presence of others”. Your presence, to be more precise, is what our campers need. As a group of individuals working together, we become an expert. Our goals are as lofty as Hogg’s Bluff. We will build Monsignor Fournie Mini Camp Village and a new Rifle Range before summer camp 2015. If plans go as hoped, we will soon position ourselves to build a modern shower house and bathroom facility for the West side of the lake. Equally as important, we will welcome a new generation of summer campers to the Camp Ondessonk family as we continue our path of enrollment growth. Our achievements, whether big or small, will definitely be easier to attain with your presence. Please continue sending the kids in your life to camp. Please continue giving your time, talent, and treasure. Please be present. God’s children are depending upon you.

Sincerely,

Dan KingExecutive Director

Campers Hit the Jackpot at “A Night in Las Vegas!” After betting on the rat races, spinning the big wheel and hitting the blackjack table, 310 high rollers raised their paddles high to support Camp at our 2015 Gala and Auction, held at the Sheraton Four Points in Fairview Heights Illinois on March 7th. The results were spectacular! The returns are still early, but the profit from “A Night in Las Vegas” promises to exceed $74,000, more than double the success of Camp’s “Night in Margaritaville” Gala and Auction in 2013. The highlight of the evening was the “Fund a Need” auction, which raised over $25,000 for Camp’s special building projects including the new Monsignor Fournie Mini Camp Village, our new Brebeuf Flats Shower House (breaking ground this fall), the new rifle range pavilion, and many other small projects to be completed in 2015. The cheers during “Fund a Need” pledges were loud and wild, raising everyone’s spirits high. Bidders felt the electricity throughout the night, as they battled over popular auction items in the silent auction and in “Caesar’s Palace.” The silent auction raised more than $21,000, while the popular “Cabin Fever” raised $6,400 in about 5 minutes – an auction record. The night didn’t end with the auction. A huge crowd stayed to dance to music provided by Funatics, featuring board member Tip Belz on harmonica and guest, Joe Camel, on vocals and guitar. Heepwah to the Gala Committee (led by

our energetic chairperson Louise McMinn), all the gala night volunteers, and all the guests who made this party a success! Check out all the gala photos at Facebook.com/Ondessonk.

You can still be part of the “Night in Las Vegas!” Just visit

Camp Board President Beth Keserauskis (left) with Mia Cilano; a former camper. Mia gave a heart-warming speech about how Camp Ondessonk changed her life and expressed her gratitude for all the staff, volunteers and supporters who make Camp possible. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house!

Good friends Kathy “Cocky” Beine, Matt Hohmann, and Jim Beine celebrate their big winnings at the auction.

Stable News By Meagan Walters, Equestrian Director Hello from the Ondessonk Stables! We are excited to be celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of our current horse barn this year. Camp has had stables and a herd since it first opened in 1959. The earliest Ondessonk stable buildings were located in two places. One of the early barns, which was only used for a few summers, was in the place now called Brebeuf Flats. Stables A and B were located adjacent to the parking lot. A portion of one of those buildings is currently used as shelter for newly arrived horses. Our current barn was built by staff and volunteers between 1983 and 1985 and has been in use ever since. From the barn at Brebeuf Flats to the current stables, and from trails like Mushroom Rock to Roller Coaster, Camp Ondessonk’s Equestrian Program has a rich history. Horses like Rodger, Silver, Lump, Thunder, Cody, Nicoma, Black Magic, Apache, and Memphis played an important role in years past. More recently, some of you may know horses like Midnight, Spunky, Comrad, Brandy, Killian, Chief, Zeb, and Lady, who currently help us teach campers. Still, it is not just the barn and horses that make our place so special. The many people and volunteers who support us make Camp. Our barn literally wouldn’t exist without you! A big thank you goes out to the folks who have supported and those who continue to support the stables and camp programs –we greatly appreciate you! We hope you will come help us celebrate during our thirtieth year. We invite you to schedule a trail ride, volunteer, or come just for a visit. We are really excited about the next thirty years at the Stables and what our future holds! This year, we have a lot of new faces in the herd. Campers may get to meet horses like Boomer, Thunder, Montana, Ringo, Cowboy, Sky, Socks, Storm, and Lightning. Another new face we are happy to have at the barn is our year-round equestrian coordinator, Lauren Lilly. Many of you already know Lauren through her many years of service as a summer and outdoor education staff member. Lauren and I are getting ready for Spring programming and are looking forward to teaching campers and hosting a Certified Horsemanship Association certification clinic this Summer. Our horse herd, facility, and programs may be changing and evolving, but there is one important thing that remains throughout the years: the tradition of riding a good trail horse through the beautiful woods at Camp Ondessonk. Until next time, Heepwah and Happy Trails.

The Flaming Arrow By The Lodge Officials Lodge jumped into Fall of 2014 with a bang. All Tribes have made it their mission to spread Camp’s message. This Fall Springfield Tribe took a hike complete with a traditional pack out lunch and tea at Lincoln Memorial Gardens. Springfield also participated in the Mini O’Beirne Crisis Nursery by volunteering at a local holiday store where they assisted children to shop for holiday gifts for their families. Tri-State kicked off their busy Fall season with their first meeting on October 25, 2014. Afterwards they hosted a work weekend at Camp on November 14 through 16. During the weekend the tribe collected and split wood in preparation for the Spring season. Tribe Official Andrew Derby deemed the weekend a great success saying, “Throughout the weekend, especially during the work project, we bonded as a tribe and we bonded with other tribes.” Many of the tribes participated in Trick-or-Treating for camp this year raising money for camp, and collecting food items to donate to those in need.

Thanks so much to everyone for all the hard work you’ve done! We hope you have a wonderful start to the year, and we can’t wait to see you and hear what more great acts you’ve accomplished at Spring Lodge Reunion on the weekend of April 10 -12! Heepwah!

Spring 2015 Outdoor Education Season By Greg Santen Program Director After a long, cold, and snowy winter, we are finally arcing toward the sun once again and the 2015 Spring Outdoor Education Staff is ready to begin another busy season. Camp is delighted to welcome Greg Fox, Cassie Roy, and Ally Sheehan to the Ondessonk Outdoor Education Staff; and Lauren Lilly has stepped up into her new role as Equestrian Coordinator. We have just completed our annual Summer Camp promotional campaign, which was organized by our wonderful Program Coordinator, Olivia Hammond. We visited over 175 schools in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Kentucky from January through March. We all owe a huge Heepwah to Olivia, Ian Standard, Patrick Moseley, and Tony Vrooman for their tireless efforts and enduring long days traveling on the road to ensure 2015 is the best summer ever! Despite the wet weather, the first annual Maple Sugarin’ Weekend was a huge success. All 15 participants had a great time and all had a hand in creating their own bottle of Camp Ondessonk Maple Syrup to take home and enjoy. We are thrilled with the success of this first year. We plan to include it in our annual program calendar for many years to come. Camp Ondessonk is blessed to be able to continue its mission of inspiring growth through

nature year round to thousands of kids of all ages from across the region. Camp will be hosting many groups throughout the spring, including school groups, scout groups, spiritual and teambuilding retreats, and Road Scholars. Our school groups are

the core of our program season; coming to us from Belleville, Evansville, St. Louis, Paducah, and the local area. We are also excited to be hosting nearly 40 Road Scholars from across the US and Canada who come to Camp for unique, intimate experiences exploring Southern Illinois on foot, on horseback, or in a canoe. Our Specialty Weekends and events are always a great way to keep Camp in your life throughout the year, and we are looking forward to our annual Father-Son Weekend, Spring Lodge Reunion, and Stable Round-Up in April, and our two Open Houses in May. Even with all the great events going on at Camp Ondessonk this spring, there are still plenty of chances to come to Camp for beautiful solitude if you want to just get away, sleep in a treehouse, and enjoy the most beautiful place on Earth. Give us a call to reserve a unit for the weekend and bring the whole family!

Where are they Now? By Dan King Invite someone dangerous to tea. - SARK

Danny Clancy and I were first-year counselors in 1987. A couple of times I’d noticed the tough looking red-head with muscles atop muscles when we were campers during previous summers. He certainly wouldn’t have noticed me, but everyone knew who Clancy was. He stood out. He was tough - I wasn’t. He was also a little rough around the edges - something we can all identify with even if we hide the roughness from the view of others. Danny, from a family of 3 boys and 2 girls, is from Chicago. His South Side Irish Catholic childhood was complicated by divorce. The Clancy kids were mostly raised in the home kept by their grandmother, a determined family woman, and their father, a somewhat legendary Chicago Police officer whose love for his children was sometimes muted by battles with his own demons. Gram and Mr. Clancy made Camp Ondessonk a family priority. It became an oasis for the Clancy kids. As Danny and I became friends I soon realized his tough and sometimes angry exterior was well worth looking past. His smile, when flashed, brightened the soul of everyone who dared to look closely. He quickly became a popular counselor among campers. They liked him for all of the reasons people are drawn to tough-guys. They also liked him because he was a good counselor. Danny eventually became Camp Ondessonk’s

Equestrian Director, which led him down the path to becoming a professional farrier. His expertise in horse hoof care, strong work ethic, and skill now combine to make him a valuable commodity in the greater Central Florida horse community in which he, his wife, and their children - now young adults, live. Danny recently told me about the dreams of camp he often has while sleeping - something I’ve heard repeatedly from former counselors and campers. In terms of present day involvement in camp, he does so much more than dream. Twice a year or more, Danny and his wife visit their property near camp - land on which they will someday retire. Danny always brings his horseshoeing equipment and spends a day or more working on camp’s horses for free. Professional horseshoeing work is expensive, I should add. But, Danny doesn’t stop there. His extremely valuable work is always accompanied by a significant donation of some sort. Danny Clancy gives.

pete korte First Recipientof the Ondessonk Builders and Founders Legacy Award Long-time Camp supporter Cyril “Pete” Korte was honored as the first recipient of the Ondessonk Builders and Founders Legacy Award at the 2015 Camp Ondessonk Gala and Benefit Auction in Fairview Heights, Illinois on March 7th, 2015. After accepting his award, Pete thanked his wife Jane and his entire family for their support over the years, saying, “I couldn’t do it without them.” Six of his children and their spouses attended the presentation, and the Korte family received a standing ovation for their contributions. Pete’s support spans decades, and his passion and greatest gift has been the gift of camp. In 1996, Pete hosted the first annual Camp Ondessonk Golf Benefit, which raises funds to support camp and most especially the Scholarship Fund. Hundreds of Pete’s colleagues, family and friends have participated as golfers, sponsors, and volunteers, urged by his exclamation “It’s all for the kids!” This year is the 20th anniversary of the golf benefit, and as of this year, Pete Korte and his team will have raised over $600,000 to benefit the children of Camp Ondessonk.

In addition, as the owner of Korte & Luitjohan Contractors Inc., in Highland Illinois, he has been instrumental in helping camp with its many building projects, from volunteering his employee’s time and expertise to providing his company’s equipment to help camp complete projects on time and significantly under budget. Pete and his team were a big part of building camp’s beach shower house, the installation of waterlines down camp’s main road, the construction of the old dining hall pavilion, the high ropes challenge course and climbing wall, and many, many more Camp projects.
