In the race to process instant coffee, you’ve got to be swift – and skilled – to succeed. And since winning it takes a huge investment, it’s crucial to make sure you get your money’s worth.
The FIC™ performs 50% faster than conventional manual extraction methods, with a high yield and level of quality other equipment just can’t match. Considering the best finished product starts with the best extraction – and the best extraction is closely tied to extraction time – the FIC™ ensures you’re always up to speed.
A fully automated, continuous extraction system, the FIC™ is made up of eight percolator vessels that operate in a flowing battery design. What’s more, it can perform in a variety of different modes for a variety of coffee types. Unparalleled flexibility, the highest obtainable yield, premium quality . . . it’s designed to put your business into a higher gear.
50% faster, 100% performance
Unparalleled flexibility, the highest obtainable yield, premium quality . . . the FIC™ is designed to put your business into a higher gear.
Yield here The coffee beans themselves are obviously your greatest expense. That’s why it is crucial to ensure your extraction process gets the most out of your valuable beans.
The FIC™ gives an extremely efficient, high yield with better quality than you can get from any other equipment – a yield of up to 53% or more, with excellent quality.
Turns on a dime You’re in full control with the FIC™. Choose between one, two or all three modes of operation to create a finished product that is the right match with your market and your aspirations. And change easily from one to another mode at your discretion. The FIC™ can do it all.
Steering the process1. Prior to the extraction process, the roasted coffee must be ground to a
carefully selected particle size to achieve the right water flow and extraction yield without hindering the flow in the vessels. The grinding is done in two stages with a screening between to obtain a controlled and narrow particle distribution.
2. Effective extraction requires that all coffee particles come into contact with the extraction water. The roasted and ground coffee is therefore pre-wetted in a mixer that ensures uniform wetting. Pre-wetting actually has two purposes: to avoid channelling of the extraction water and to help de-gas the coffee particles to avoid foam formation.
3. The pre-wetted coffee is filled into the extractors; at the same time air is removed from the extractor to ensure correct packing of the coffee. Then a high vacuum removes all remaining gas in the coffee.
4. The actual extraction is a high-speed, double extraction process. Double extraction means that extraction of the aroma compounds at temperatures below 120°C takes place separately in as quickly as 15-20 minutes. The resulting aroma extract is of extremely high quality. And the speed makes it a very efficient process.
5. Aroma extraction is followed by extraction of the hydrolysed compounds in the coffee. This also takes place at water speeds up to twice that of conventional extraction, resulting in a much shorter extraction time and a turbulent flow. Again, the shorter extraction time gives better extract quality, and the turbulent flow increases extraction efficiency.
6. The design of the extractors and the preparation of the roasted and ground coffee make the higher liquid velocity and shorter extraction time possible. The FIC™ decreases overall extraction time from the conventional 200-240 minutes to roughly 120 minutes.
For manufacturers with good tasteThe taste of qualityWhile hydrolysis is the fraction of the extract necessary for effective processing and a high yield, aroma is the “motor” of great-tasting coffee. And as you well know, the more aroma you can extract, contain and preserve in the process, the better your final product.
What you might not know, however, is that both time and temperature play a huge role in determining the quality of the aroma. A short extraction time at moderate/low temperatures is one key to a high-quality aroma extract. The FIC™ speeds up the water flow, ensuring a turbulent flow around the coffee particles to enhance the extraction rate at the desired temperature.
Having delivered more than 200 instant coffee plants around the world since our start decades ago, GEA Niro is at the forefront of coffee processing technology – and good taste.
Designing high performanceThese days, you don’t want to be dependent on a manual process. The FIC™, with its fully automated control, ensures precision processing that meets the world’s highest standards. Fully integrated with a PC/PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) system, the FIC™ offers easy operation and uniform extract quality.
A compact design also reduces space requirements compared to standard battery extraction units. In fact, every FIC™ component is designed to the highest manufacturing standards for efficient, long-lasting performance.
