Experience is CriticalWeve manufactured motors for over 100 years.GE Motors has the capability to design and manufacture electrical rotating
machines up to 100,000 HP, and have supplied over 800,000 HP of motors
for variable speed applications. This century of achievement has built a rich
tradition of technical excellence, quality and reliability.
Standards & CertificationsGE has the capability to design electrical rotating machines that comply
with global standards and certifications, including but not limited to NEMA,
IEC, API, Lloyds, ABS, ATEX and PTB. Imperial (english) or metric systems
compliant components are available per customer specification.
Our manufacturing facilities are ISO 9001 certified.
Why Synchronous Motors?
High efficiency - increased operating cost savings
Low starting current - provides better overall starting capability, which reduces the starting equipment cost.
Unity or leading power factor reduced utility penaltiesassociated with lagging power factor.

Stator Construction
StatorThe fabricated steel plate statorframe consists of two or more sideplates continuously welded to thewrapper plates and rectangular steelblock feet to provide a rigid statorsupport. The strength of this framemaintains a uniform air gap underall operational stresses.
Stator laminations are precision-punched from high-quality low-losselectrical sheet steel which are coatedwith a thermally stable insulation film(C5 coating) to minimize eddy current
losses. The laminations are assem-bled in accurate alignment within thestator frame to form the stator core.Ventilation ducts are formed fromsturdy I beams spaced for strengthand noise control. The core is clampedunder heavy uniform pressure in theframe to prevent distortion. The result-ing assembled stator structure hassuperior strength and rigidity, whichwill promote quiet performance, longlife and trouble-free operation.
Bracket FrameStatorGE Motors can manufacture bracketbearing machines up to 67,000 HP(50,000 kW) and offers pedestalbearing machines throughout ourproduct range.
The bracket frame is similar in con-struction to the Pedestal machines, except that the frame extends pastthe end of the winding in order tomount heavy gauge fabricatedsteel endshields and the bearings. This type of machine has the corepiled outside of the frame. The coreis wound and then mounted intothe frame.
BracingRigid support of the stator coil ends iscritical to the ability of the machineto withstand the mechanical forcescaused by starting, external shortcircuits and impact loading. GEsbracing systems are specificallydesigned for the machine application,
and use materials and processes togive optimum strength to withstandthe applied mechanical forces.
Insulation is KeyThe advanced insulation systemprovided on all large motor productwill reward you with many years ofreliable operation, whether on f ixedor adjustable speed applications.
GEs insulation systems are designeto minimize the effect of localizedelectrical stress and reduce theeffects of partial discharge, increas-ing machine life and reliability.Components are carefully chosenfor compatibility with the system asa whole. The insulation system is
subjected to rigorous testing according to applicable IEEE, IEC, NEMAand API standards.
All but the very largest wound stato
undergo global vacuum-pressureimpregnation (VPI) treatment. Thisprocess employs automated capactance monitoring to ensure that eacstator winding is fully impregnatedwith epoxy resin. After curing, it bindthe stator components into a solidand rigid structure with excellentdielectric strength, dimensionalstability, and mechanical strength. It also increases the resistance of thwinding to thermal shock, moistureand other contaminants.
Adjustable frequency drives canplace additional stresses on themachines insulation system.GE has significant experience withthese technical requirements and isable to tailor the motor and motorinsulation systems to meet themost demanding applications.

Rotor Construction
High Speed4-6 Pole Solid Rotors
High speed rotors need maximumstrength and stiffness to provide along life. GE Motors makes its highspeed rotor from a solid cylindricalforging and machines out the polebodies and pole tips. The field wind-ings are edge wound copper stripswith dimensionally stable insulationmaterial bonded between the turns.Every turn has mechanically lockedand brazed corner joints for maxi-mum strength and every other turn islarger for more efficient cooling.
GE Solid Rotor Design Benefits
High thermal capacity morefrequent starts and/or high load
inertia capability
High operating efficiency leadsto minimal operating costs
Fewer components
Reduced mechanical stress
Improved mechanical stabilityfrom minimal vibration levels
Proven experience froma technology innovator
Medium Speed8-14 Pole Rotor Construction
Medium speed machine shafts aremanufactured of forged or rolledsteel and machined to exact applica-tion specifications. The shaft endsare normally cylindrical, taperedor flanged.
Low SpeedGreater than 14 poles
Low speed machine designs areanother strength for GE Motors. Our rotor designs typically includea forged steel shaft along with afabricated steel hub, web and rim tosupport the field windings. The rimdiameter and thickness is selected tosuit the inertia requirements as wellas meet the electrical requirementsof the design. Field windings areoptimized to suit the applicationutilizing rectangular copper wire orcopper strip all provided with our
well-proven Class F insulation system. The amortisseur winding design, akey to reliability, is also optimizedto suit the specific application.

Customer Solutions
QuadramaticLoad Sharing Drive
For grinding mill applications,GE has developed a drive using two, high efficiency, synchronous motordriven pinions on one bull gear.A Quadramatic load sharing driveuses a special winding in addition tothe amortisseur winding to dynami-cally alter the rotor flux. Thesecontinuous adjustments maintainthe load sharing between the twopinions reducing wear andimproving performance.
ExcitationBrushless Excitation System
This arrangement is generally usedacross all segments of industry as itrequires minimal maintenance and iswell suited for hazardous or contami-nated environments. The solid statecomponents utilized are liberallyrated and chosen specifically toendure the high mechanical andelectrical stresses experienced onthe most challenging applications.
Collector Ring ExcitationThis arrangement consists of carbon
steel or stainless steel slip ringsmounted on, and insulated from, therotor shaft. The rings have a groovedsurface to ensure effective coolingand proper current sharing amongthe brushes. Depending upon currentloading, additional cooling can beprovided by means of annular cool-ing fins. This arrangement is com-monly used on high performancevariable speed motor applicationswhere a particularly fast responsemay be required.
Rotector IIFaster Startups.
Reduced Downtime.Rotector II is designed tocontinuously monitor and protectlarge machines from potentiallycatastrophic failures. By monitoringthe field winding temperature, keycomponent temperature and f ieldwinding insulation resistance, down-time can be minimized and mainte-nance can be scheduled at the firstsign of potential problems. Byemploying the latest digital teleme-try, Rotector II offers a significant
advancement over older analogtechniques. The result is high dataintegrity and accuracy even in themost difficult environments experi-enced by large machines.
Rotector II provides improved rotorprotection in the following ways:
Real time field current andvoltage readings.
Direct temperature measurementof key rotor components.
First fault rotor ground faultdetection during operation orwhile stationary.
Diode failure detection.
All these features minimize commis-sioning time, increase reliability, reduce maintenance costs and allowoptimized performance at all times.
