Consumer Water Concerns
Increased awareness and concern about water quality through media and increasing water main breaks.
Consumers are demanding:
 Better tasting water
 Safe & reliable water
Fresh water, free of taste & odor
 Healthy water

What is a “Microbiological” Purifier?
What is a Microbiological Purifier? As specified by the USEPA, a “Microbiological Water Purifier must remove, kill or inactivate all types of
disease-causing microorganisms from the water, including bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts so as to render the processed water safe for drinking”.
What are the Primary Requirements to Become a Microbiological Purifier?Demonstrated to remove, kill or inactivate on various test waters:
• >99.9% protozoan cysts• >99.9999% bacteria• >99.99% viruses
Where can I use a Microbiological Water Purifier? The system can be used to treat water of unknown microbiological quality to make the water potable.
This could include water that has been previously treated but may have become microbiologically contaminated during its distribution (e.g. water main breaks, aging distribution pipes etc.).
The Homespring™ Central Water Purifier is the first whole home mechanical water filtration system that has been certified as a Microbiological Water Purifier to the USEPA Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers.

Water Borne Biological Threats
Disease causing pathogens are categorized as:
Parasites –Cryptosporidium, Giardia (beaver
fever)
Bacteria –E. Coli, Salmonella, Legionella
Viruses –Enteric Viruses (Hepatitis A and E),
Norwalk,Rotavirus, Adenovirus

Aging Distribution Systems Present Threat to
Water Quality
“…although the water leaving a municipal treatment plant may comply with all US EPA criteria, events occurring in the water distribution system after water leaves the plant can lead to significant spikes in contaminant levels…”
Source:
Water Experts Fear Post-Treatment Contamination, Industry Outlook, WaterTech.online
2/11/2004
Threats from Distribution System Include: Biofilm development on pipes which harbor pathogens
 Contaminant leaching/corrosion
Insufficient funds to maintain aging infrastructure
Pathogen development in stagnant or dead ends of pipes
Contamination due to water main breaks

Water Main Breaks…an everyday concern
There are over 700 water main breaks per day in the USA and Canada.
New York City, USA
6,000 miles of water distribution piping
Over 550 water main breaks per year
1 break for every 10 miles of piping
Toronto, Canada
5,300 miles of water distribution piping
~1600 water main breaks throughout 2003
1 break for every 3 miles of piping
Sewer lines often located within 2 feet of water mains
Water Main Breaks = Increased Risk of Contamination

Milwaukee, WI 1993
The Problem Heavy rainfall caused unusually high levels of Cryptosporidium into Lake Michigan. City plant unable to handle. Identified improper installation of monitoring system.
Possible Contamination Sources Nearby slaughterhouses / Sewage treatment plant / Cattle Farms Two weeks before identification and boil water alert issued.
Result of Water Contamination 400,000 sick, 100 deaths
General Issues Identified Estimated 50 million Americans still drink from substandard water systems Half of the Water Utilities in the country sometimes fail to remove the same microbe
causing Milwaukee outbreak More people, more development and new diseases affect the quality and safety of tap
water We know a great deal more about chemical contamination of drinking water than
about biological contamination

How Membranes Work
Membrane fibers have billions of microscopic pores
on the surface
The pores form a barrier to impurities, while allowing
water molecules to pass

POE – CentralPOU
Install POE in basement or garage (low value space)
Many POU’s take up valuable space under the counter or in the fridge
POE physically removes bacteria, viruses & cysts
Many POU’s do not remove pathogens
Carbon filter only needs to be changed once per year
Usually requires filter changes every 3-6 months
POE provides unlimited water to all your taps
Usually provides limited treated water supply
Provides convenient, dependable, cleaner water from every tap in your home
Only provides filtered water from one tap
Market Price Range: $40.00 - $15,000.00
