Early Warning of Increased Spindle Wear on a CNC Lathe

Avoids ~$45k in Costs

What did GE Digital’s software find?

Beginning in February, GE Digital’s Predictive Quality Monitoring solution detected a

deviation on a CNC lathe at a heavy industry manufacturing plant. The spindle load

exceeded 150% of the rated power for more than 10 seconds on a particular cut on a high

volume part process. This behavior continued to repeat for each part run. GE Digital’s

Industrial Performance & Reliability Center (IPRC) sent out a high priority notification and

added this item to the weekly report for discussion with the customer.

What was the underlying cause?

After the alert from the IPRC, the customer discovered that the tooling selected for the

feature cut was a 1” step drill chosen to limit chip stringing. Although chip stringing was

limited, this tool choice was inadvertently causing very high chip loads. When the

customer realized the sub-optimal tooling selection and its potential impact on spindle

life, the decision was made to select a different tool to make the same feature cut while

decreasing wear on the spindle and limiting chip stringing.

What was the value to the customer?

Due to the early notification from the IPRC, the customer was able to reevaluate their tool

choice in order to significantly prolong spindle life. This catch is estimated to have

avoided approximately $45k in production losses and spindle replacement costs.
