REMOTE TERMINAL UNITS IN SMART GRID, 2013 UPDATE – MARKET ANALYSIS AND FORECAST TO 2020
Executive Summary
Global Remote Terminal Unit Market Expected to Register Nominal Growth, 2011–2020
The global market for Remote Terminal Units
(RTUs) is expected to register nominal growth in
the next few years until 2020. The global market
for RTUs is nearing saturation, as the deployment
of RTUs has been going on since the 1970s. This
leaves limited scope for growth in the North
American and European power markets. The
market in these countries is expected to be driven
by Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition
(SCADA) upgrades that are expected to occur
during the period from 2013 to 2020. On the other
hand, the Southeast Asian countries are expected
to play a key role in the global RTU market in
coming years, as they undertake a major drive to
remove inefficiencies in their power infrastructure
and expand it in order to increase capacity. The
value of the global market for RTUs amounted to
an estimated $XXm in 2012 and is expected to
grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR)
of XX% between 2013 and 2020.

Developing Countries Expected to Register Considerable Growth
Developing countries, in regions such as
Southeast Asia, South America, and Africa,
represent substantial scope for RTU installations.
These countries have a considerable power
supply-demand gap. This inadequacy adversely
affects the growth prospects of these nations,
which has led their respective governments to
come up with specific policy measures aimed at
upgrading and expanding their national power
grids. Some countries are expected to register a
high growth rate for RTUs, such as Indonesia with
XX%. As a result, the developing countries in
question are expected to contribute to the growth
of the global RTU market.

REMOTE TERMINAL UNITS IN SMART GRID, 2013 UPDATE – MARKET ANALYSIS AND FORECAST TO 2020
Introduction
2 Introduction
The global power industry is currently undergoing a massive upgrade in terms of power
Transmission and Distribution (T&D) infrastructure. The need for this arose from the ever-
increasing instances of power failures and other grid inefficiencies, which led to losses in business
and increased dissatisfaction among consumers. The initiatives led by different national agencies
to upgrade the T&D infrastructure represent a major opportunity for the development of smart grid
technologies with the ability to address grid inefficiency concerns. Monitoring and control
technologies are a key enabler for improving the efficiency of the grid. Frequent monitoring of
power flow in the grid will enable utilities to perform necessary maintenance when it is required.
This will reduce the instances of power disruption that result from the sudden malfunctioning of the
power grid systems. The equipment that is required to collect data from sensing, measuring and
other equipment is known as a Remote Terminal Unit (RTU). The RTUs acquire the data from
different equipment and send it to the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system
for further analysis and control. The need for RTUs is driven by the necessity of monitoring the
status of substation devices, gathering basic metering data, and providing supervisory control
capability from a remote SCADA or Energy Management Systems (EMS).
An RTU is a fundamental building block for a SCADA system. RTUs are an integral part of SCADA
systems, as they are used for the collection of data from data acquisition equipment, which is sent
to the main SCADA system or EMS over a wired or wireless network. An RTU acts as a sensor that
measures various parameters such as flow of current, voltage and others at a substation or
transformer and sends the data back to the SCADA system. RTUs are static equipment with no
moving parts, and the utilities therefore replace the RTUs typically once every XX–XX years.
RTUs have been used in the global power industry for more than XX years. Traditionally, RTUs
were installed at substations. With the advent of the smart grid and the need for a variety of
different kinds of sensing equipment, the scope for the use of RTUs is expected to increase to
include smart metering, capacity banks, feeders and others. The RTUs currently used in smart grid
are small in comparison with earlier versions. In the smart grid, RTUs are typically used in SCADA
systems only, but with evolving smart grid needs, the scope of use of RTUs is expected to increase
in coming years. The RTUs that are used for smart grid activities are known as pole-top RTUs,
which are usually mounted over a pole. These RTUs are known as Feeder RTUs (F-RTUs) in
India.

REMOTE TERMINAL UNITS IN SMART GRID, 2013 UPDATE – MARKET ANALYSIS AND FORECAST TO 2020
Introduction
The global RTU market is expected to grow at a moderate rate, as the markets in the major
countries are at the stage of saturation. The increase in T&D infrastructure provides a substantial
boost to the global RTU industry. Furthermore, increased power generation capacity will lead to the
growth of T&D infrastructure as utilities are more concerned about substation automation now, this
will also work as a driver for the RTU industry.
The global market for RTUs has the presence of major players such as Siemens, General Electric
(GE), Schneider Electric, Foxboro and ABB. The presence of the players varies according to the
region or country of operation in question. The presence of major global companies is diluted in the
Asian countries where the markets are fragmented and dominated by local players.

REMOTE TERMINAL UNITS IN SMART GRID, 2013 UPDATE – MARKET ANALYSIS AND FORECAST TO 2020
3 Remote Terminal Units Market, Global, Overview
The global RTU market presents a mixed picture, with different regions exhibiting varied growth
rates. The growth of the market in North America has slowed, as the technology has been in
existence for a number of years. Developed countries such as the US, Canada and other European
countries accounted for a major share of the global RTU market for smart grid technology. A
number of Southeast Asian, African and South American countries are still registering growth at a
moderate rate as the governments undertake power grid reforms in order to improve the efficiency
of power T&D.
3.1 Remote Terminal Units Market, Global, Market Size Analysis, 2011–2020
The global RTU market for smart grids is dependent upon the deployment of SCADA systems, as
the RTUs are mostly installed or replaced when SCADA systems are installed or upgraded. The
value of the global market for RTUs amounted to an estimated $XX billion in 2011 and increased to
$XX billion in 2012.
The global RTU market has reached a state of maturity and is expected to grow at a Compound
Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of around XX% during the period from 2013 to 2020. This slow
growth rate can be attributed to the mature nature of the market, which consists of the installation
of new devices and the replacement of old devices. RTUs do not undergo replacement at a
frequent rate, which has resulted in limited growth in the replacement market, while the market for
new installations is primarily being driven by demand from emerging nations in the Asia-Pacific,
South America and the Middle East. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to register a surge in grid
upgrade activities as regional governments deploy funds aimed at reducing inefficiency in the
power grids. The expansion of national power grids to connect more people is expected to drive
RTU demand. This will help to better monitor the flow of current and control remotely located
devices. The geographical regions that are expected to emerge as major markets for intelligent
RTUs are South and Southeast Asia, South America, the Middle East and Africa. The market for
RTUs in these regions will mostly comprise new installations rather than the replacement of
devices, which accounts for a major share of the matured markets in North America and Europe.
The value of the global market is expected to increase from $XX billion in 2013 to $XX billion in
2020.

3.4 Remote Terminal Units Market, Global, Market Share, 2012
The global market for RTUs is inhabited by T&D majors such as ABB, Schneider Electric, and
Siemens. The RTU markets in Asia-Pacific are dominated by local manufacturers such as Foxboro
and Toprank, although the North American and European markets boast the presence of major
global companies such as ABB, GE and Siemens. Siemens has emerged as the leader in the
global RTU market with a market share of XX% in 2012, closely followed by GE and Schneider
Electric, with respective shares of XX% and XX%, as illustrated in the figure below.
A major barrier to the entry of new players in the global RTU market is the loyalty of power utilities
to existing vendors. Familiarity with the existing technology has reduced the cost of learning for the
power utility personnel and as a result has meant that utilities are biased towards existing vendors.
This has impeded the prospects of small and new entrants in the global RTU industry. This
situation can be averted through the active patronization of government agencies, with the aim of
creating a more competitive environment globally and nationally.
