Well, hello Summer! What a hot kick off to the
start of 2013. I hope you are all safe and un-
touched by the tragic recent fire outbreaks
we’ve had all over the Country and let’s keep
our fingers crossed that the remainder of
Summer is a mild and happy one.
We have our February Rally booked for Saturday 9th February (details on
page 3) with instructors Michael Baker and Robbie Allen. Please get your
rally bookings to Lucy by the 1st of February to reserve a place with these
popular coaches.
Also a big reminder that the official HRCAV Showjumping Day is being held
at the GDARC club grounds on Sunday 10th February (the day after our
next rally). The cut of date for entries is the 31st January 2013 so make
sure you check out the details on page 4 and get your entries to Lucy
before the end of the month.
Member Elle McKenzie has written a terrific article on her time as a
Equitana Volunteer at Melbourne 2012 and for anyone who has ever
considered volunteering check out her insider’s scoop on how to get the
best seats in the house for Sydney 2013 (see page 5).
On behalf of the Committee and associated positions we wish all of the
GDARC members and their four legged friends a wonderful and prosperous
2013.

EQUITANA 2012
By Elle McKenzie
Naturally, I’m on the email list for Equitana… and every time I received an email I went from
excited to ‘how on earth am I going to be able to afford a ticket’ in 3.2 seconds… until I received
the email calling for volunteers! I wondered if it were too good to be true, a ticket to all 4 days
of competition and all I had to do was work a few hours?? Surely not, but I thought, what the
heck… at least I’ll be there! Might even learn something!
From the word go, volunteer team manager Leasa Stephen was incredible with her
communication and organisation. Queries were answered promptly and she managed to work the
roster so we all got to see the events we were most interested in watching. The volunteers are
split into teams, each with different roles- imagine my delight when I saw that I was rostered on
to the Indoor Competition Team… woohoo!! And even better- with fellow GDARC member Sarah
McKenzie-Crawford, with Amanda and Ebony Edwards on the volunteer team as well!! I guess
great minds really do think alike!!
EQUITANA 2012
By Elle McKenzie CONTINUED
My first shift was on the Thursday night for the World Cup Show-Jumping final. If you think front
row is good- try watching it from the sand! Best ‘non-seat’ in the house let me tell you! Grant-
ed, you do put your safety in the hands of crazy show-jumpers who place no value on your life
whatsoever, but eh… you take the good with the bad! Our job was to run around madly between
rounds filling holes, raking sand and picking up poles, all the while trying to dodge said crazy
show-jumpers… FYI- did not need to go to the gym the next day!
I remember finishing this shift thinking good golly (I didn’t really use those words exactly)- 4
days of this is going to be hard yakka! Fortunately, the rest of my shifts were quite cruisy in
comparison and involved some set up and pack up, but all in all- a lot of watching the
amazing events that Equitana showcased. I saw the best of the best in Reining, Horsemanship
and Dressage- all whilst on shift!
I cannot speak highly enough of the volunteer experience, I met some fantastic people, shared
moments that spectators just cannot buy, and was able to see Equitana from a
different perspective.
Equitana itself encompasses just about everything relating to every facet of equestrian sport
over a 4 day program. It attracts internationally renowned experts to deliver materclasses of
the highest calibre and riders from across the country to compete in competition at elite level.
Did I mention shopping? THE BEST trade village ever (in Australia anyway for all the WEG at-
tendees about to jump down my throat)… I am no financial advisor, but DO NOT leave your cred-
it card in the freezer for Equitana weekend!
The highlights for me personally were watching Mary King’s masterclasses, Manolo Mendez and
shockingly… the World Cup Show-Jumping! …having said that, I was very very tempted to go
home and chuck the stocky on Bailey after watching the cutting… hard to say if this was due to
the four legged talent or the two though… some of those cowboys were pretty easy on the eye!
Anyway… back to volunteering… as if the experience itself is not enough… you get all your uni-
forms for free- and get to keep them! You get a meal voucher when you are on shift, and back-
stage passes to watch pretty much whatever you like, it’s a no-brainer for me… I’m already
signed up for Sydney & happy to help anyone else who might be
interested in joining me??
