GCU President

President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Pamela Gillies CBE is an internationally respected academic and university leader. She heads one of the UK’s most dynamic and diverse higher education institutions, which is committed to providing an unrivalled university education and student experience, underpinned by a determination to champion social change at home and across the world.

Among other initiatives, this has led to the founding of the Grameen Caledonian College of Nursing in Bangladesh to improve health care education; the Caledonian Club in Glasgow and London to raise educational aspirations; and support for the UK’s first micro-finance lending system, all of which demonstrate GCU’s commitment to its ‘common good’ mission.

Professor Gillies’ career has taken her to Geneva with WHO’s Global Programme on Aids; to Harvard University as a Visiting Professor in Health and Human Rights; to New York as a Harkness Fellow of the Commonwealth Fund of New York; and to San Francisco, where she completed an Abbot Fellowship for Aids research. She has written widely on HIV/Aids and health development and is a founding patron of a school for children of sex workers in Kolkata, India.

In 2013, Professor Gillies was awarded the CBE by HM The Queen for her services to education and public health.

Nobel Laureate and founder of the Grameen Bank, Professor Muhammad Yunus, is dedicated to the empowerment of those living in poverty to change their lives and the lives of those around them. For nearly four decades, Professor Yunus has championed the use of micro-finance and education as the drivers for social change, and he continues to travel widely to inspire young people across the world to devote themselves to social causes. One of only seven people to have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal, Professor Yunus is a recipient of 115 awards from 26 countries, including the Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope Award, which was presented to him in New York recently. Professor Yunus has worked with GCU since 2008 and was installed as Chancellor in October 2012. Collaborations include the foundation of the Grameen Caledonian College of Nursing in Bangladesh, the launch of the Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health at GCU, and the creation of the Grameen Scotland Foundation charity.

Town Halls

The first in a series of Town Hall meetings held at GCU New York focuses on sustainable fashion, featuring business leaders from two high-profile heritage brands – one Scottish, one American: Harris Tweed Hebrides and Brooks Brothers, the Madison Avenue-based clothier. Harris Tweed Hebrides Creative Director Mark Hogarth and Chairman Brian Wilson – who is also a Visiting Professor at GCU – joins Brooks Brothers Senior Fabric Specialist Doug Shriver for the event. The debate examines the role the

hand-woven fabric Harris Tweed has played in sustaining a small Hebridean community and the way ethical fashion and luxury brands can support each other for the good of all. GCU NY’s focus on sustainable fashion will be supported by a collaboration with the Tribeca Film Institute in which a series of films, discussing the issues from the Town Halls, will form the basis for contributions to the annual Tribeca Film Festival.
