GCSE Music - Performance

Performance expectations

• You will have a class performance lesson Thursday (week B)

• You should bring your instrument to every performance lesson

• You should practice at home every day and discuss the GCSE requirements with your instrumental teacher

Performance 1 assessment

• 11th November – your performance at the recital will be recorded

• The piece you play can be anything you like

• You should feel confident playing the piece and it should show off what your instrument/voice can do

• It can be a solo or group performance as long as you have a significant part

How is it marked?

Your teachers will mark your work during the performance and it will be moderated by examiners.

1. Fluency & technical control2. Communication/interpretation

3. Difficulty

Choose your piece carefully!

• It should be of the hardest level that you can play well

• Picking something really easy will lose difficulty marks

• Picking something too hard might mean you play poorly and lose fluency/technical marks

• Please, please, please get advice about your piece from me or your instrumental teacher!

Today’s task! You should all have your instrument with you and have completed some research (HW) about it.

In order to give you some practice at being in front of other people you are going to demonstrate your instrument and its capabilities to us.

• 2 minute demonstration on:– how your instrument works– how it makes a sound– the types of sound possible– specialist techniques (strumming, picking, bowing, etc)– the range– styles (can you play us a musical extract to demonstrate different types of music possible

on your instrument?)– anything else to make your demonstration interesting

Optional: You can work in groups (2-4) but ONLY with people who play the same instrument.

Aims & objectivesAll students must:• Be able to identify the capabilities of their own instrument• Give a demonstration of a few instrumental techniques to the classSome students should:• Be able to identify and explain the capabilities of their own

instrument & identify features of other instruments• Give a demonstration (with musical examples) on their instrument

to the classSome students could:• Identify, explain and discriminate between the features of their

own and others’ instruments• Give a confident and interesting demonstration on their

instrument to the class & support others during the lesson.

Today’s task!

You have 15 minutes!

Ongoing HW task

Please write this in your planners – it is ‘ongoing’ but you are expected to have made a definite decision by

9th October.Choose a piece for performance 1, considering the criteria/mark scheme shown to you today. Ask your

music teacher for advice and practice it ready to perform to the class in a few weeks.
