GCMTA NEWS
"Who dares to teach must never cease to learn."
~John Cotton Dana
September brings with it an energy, enthusiasm and
anticipation of a new year of teaching, specifically
music instruction for us in GCMTA. At this point
we've made the schedule, arranged the studio,
chosen the music and started teaching again, whether
we felt 100% ready to begin or not!
Yes, our focus is on teaching as it should be, but the quote above is critical to remember if we want to be the best we can be. Striving for excellence in our profession means continuing to learn and grow personally. The following are just a few of the near limitless resources available to aid us in our endeavor: online music teacher blogs like http://www.teachpianotoday.com/blog/ & http://colorinmypiano.com/ ; professional magazines like American Music Teacher and Clavier Companion; YouTube full length movies on the Schumanns, Beethoven, Chopin - both entertaining and educational https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhWdp1r63TY&list=RDYhWdp1r63TY#t=13 ; fellow teachers also provide a wealth of knowledge. I recently read an inspirational article entitled,
"Cultivating a Tenacious Teaching Spirit" by Sara
Ernst in the Feb/Mar 2015 issue of America Music
Teacher (and, yes, it often takes me a while to get to
these!). If you haven't read this one I encourage you
to, then let me know what you think. Reading AMT
and other periodicals like it enriches your
professional status as well as the lives of your
students. If you want the highlights of AMT, click

The Gwinnett County Local Audition is a competition that will send winners to the Regional Audition and then to the State Audition. Piano students must perform one selection from the Baroque or Classical Period and one selection from the Romantic or Contemporary Period.
Start preparing your students now for this event. The Outstanding Performers or Winners in the Local Audition receive a large trophy. Students do love to win these trophies. All information is in the 2015-2016 GCMTA Directory. If you have any questions give me a call. I love to talk about Auditions.

We are pleased to
report that over

We are proud to announce a new

Sea Stories. This collection of six
late elementary level solos has
imaginative titles like, "Message in a
Bottle", "Pirates on the High Seas" &
"Mermaid and the Sea". Piano Works

If you have thought about teaching a deserving student in need, but don’t know how to link up with one, contact your local or state coordinator for assistance. Perhaps you are already teaching a student for a reduced rate or no fee. That is even easier! You can register your student in the MusicLink program with one form available online through our website. To volunteer or register a student:
1. Log onto our website at
www.musiclinkfoundation.org.
2. At the top of the Home Page, click on “How to
Participate.”
3. If you want to volunteer – complete the “Teacher
Volunteer Form.”
4. If you are already teaching a student at half or less of
your normal fee, complete the “MusicLink Registration
Form.”
Each active MusicLink Teacher receives an I.D. number
and a copy of our Discount List which makes it possible
to take advantage of discounts and offers on music and
materials. Join us and make a difference in a child’s life!
And right now for local MusicLink teachers in GCMTA and the surrounding area, because of the generosity of a retiring teacher, MusicLink Georgia has received an entire studio’s worth of music methods, supplementary and sheet music, and teaching helps and aids. Please schedule a time to come by and choose materials that will help your MusicLink student(s). Contact Nora Martin, Regional and Georgia Coordinator at 770-861-4283 or [email protected].

Federated Notes The National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) is designed to promote study, stimulate interest in American and world music literature, and encourage each participant to reach a high standard of musical achievement. Festivals are designed for ALL members of the NFMC. It is not a competition but an opportunity to perform and receive evaluation. The Gwinnett County Music Teachers Association holds three festivals annually, divided into districts: North, West and Central. Find your festival and chair on the Club Dues Form or in the Directory. Teachers are responsible for paying Jr/Sr Club membership dues by the deadline, which is the September meeting on the 23rd at LCOG in order to participate and enter students in this event. The Club Dues Form is attached and is also available on the website. Please hand deliver or mail the club dues form to your respective District Chair by the deadline and include ONE check payable to GCMTA for the total. Late registrations will not be accepted. Please note there are a couple of important changes for the upcoming 2016 festivals:
1. The full legal name of both the Senior and Junior Club members is required, including the middle name (Jr
members at time of application).
2. Teachers must use a personal Gmail address where reports will be emailed. Get your free Gmail account by
following the link on the website.
3. On the Club Dues Form, please enter full mailing addresses for ALL Sr members (teachers and adult students). We
cannot accept this information late this year.
4. Club Dues is $2 per Jr member and $8 for each Sr member (includes a one-time $3 surcharge by GFMC). Estimate
the number of Jr entrants to complete the form.
Be sure to check the Directory information for this event. There are several changes this year and more coming the
following year. NFMC is closing loopholes, so be sure to check the current bulletin and know the rules. Contact your
District Chair with all questions.
