Given China’s recent economic, political, and cultural emergence on the world stage, it becomes imperative for future leaders—whether they become lawyers, politicians, businesspeople, engineers, or academics—to fully understand the new environment and its impact on their fi eld.

Global China Connection (GCC) is the world’s largest student organization dedicated to providing the future leaders of China and the international community with a platform to engage each other. A non-profi t, non-partisan organization, GCC is represented in over 40 chapters at top universities around the world. We work directly with top Chinese universities as well as a number of corporate and organizational partners on a variety of projects to provide opportunities for our members to gain international experience and develop an international network. Under the fi scal sponsorship of Chinese Teatime Inc., Global China Connection is recognized with 501(c)3 tax-exempt status.

The GCC Network comprises of over 40 chapters at top universities worldwide. Each chapter is a recognized organization on campus, maintaining its own management, adhering to GCC standards, and actively fulfi lling our mission. Together, these chapters form the GCC network.

GCC operates chapters at a wide spectrum of universities around the world, including prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Yale, Columbia, McGill, and Oxford. Now spanning fi ve countries, the network continues to grow in 2010 to an expected 50 chapters across eight countries.

Network activities are supported and directed by GCC-Central, the management body of Global China Connection. GCC-Central directs strategy and helps facilitate many activities of the larger organization.

INTERNATIONAL EVENTS

GCC hosts large-scale conferences, panel discussions, and networking events throughout the year. Our two annual conferences—one in Beijing and one in New York—feature leaders from academia, politics, and business, attracting hundreds of students and professionals as well as international media attention. In addition to the ideas and resources shared during these events, attendees further develop their personal networks, form new friendships, and explore business opportunities.

In 2009, GCC and Peking University co-hosted a “Media Literacy Initiative”

which included a visit to The New York Times’ headquarters.

CHAPTER INITIATIVES

GCC chapters organize and manage a variety of projects both in China and around their campuses, ranging from ongoing engagements such as philanthropic activities in Western China and language exchange networks to localized social events, conferences, and cultural events. These activities bring together students and current leaders to work on projects to directly impact the cultivation of the international community. In 2010, GCC chapters are planning over 100 such activities, many of which will engage the entire GCC network.

MULTIMEDIA

GCC produces media content that contributes to the conversation about China’s future, particularlyin regards to how China’s development will affect the leaders of tomorrow. Students are empowered through the GCC network to publish articles, audio interviews, and video material that share knowledge and experiences with the network as well as the outside world. Likewise, the content and resources from media partners complements the work of our members. This content is featured on the GCC website, social media platforms, and GCC Insights, our monthly publication and newsletter.

PROGRAMS ABROAD

International internships and delegations help our members build relationships and integrate their coursework with their knowledge of Chinese culture and language. Delegations allow students from foreign universities to meet with local offi cials and business leaders, experience daily life in a different country, and of course, make new friends. Internships allow our most talented and motivated members to apply the skills acquired through GCC to practical work experience in China. Participation in these activities is competitive, available to active GCC members who apply for program positions.

INTERNATIONAL EVENTSIn 2009, GCC hosted two conferences that brought together leading thinkers to share their knowledge and participate in the conversation about China’s future. These forums featured panels and keynote speeches based on issues such as the global fi nancial crisis, sustainable development, political corruption, as well as relations between local and multinational corporations. Our 100+ speakers have included professors, CEOs, economists, lawyers and social activists. Networking sessions encourage attendees to confer with speakers, make professional connections and build friendships with like-minded students.

NEW YORK CONFERENCE - A GLIMPSE OF

CHINA’S FUTURE

On April 25, 2009, Global China Connection hosted “A Glimpse of China’s Future,” our fi rst annual New York conference, at Columbia University. Columbia’s Earl Hall became a meeting place for students from across the globe. Nobel Prize-winning economist and Columbia professor Joseph E. Stiglitz delivered the keynote address to hundreds of students and young professionals.

BEIJING CONFERENCE - ENVISIONING

CHINA’S DEVELOPMENT

More than four hundred attendees fl ocked to the campus of Peking University for our second conference, “Envisioning China’s Development” on July 18, 2009. Former Ambassador Yongqian Cui, CCTV anchor Yansong Bai, and Hualian Innovation Institute CEO Anthony Y. Tsai, delivered keynote addresses. Other prominent speakers included the Wall Street Journal’s China editor, Jason Dean; BlackRock Chief Representative and Managing

Director, David Hoantee Peng; and Executive Director of the Jane Goodall Institute China, Erika Helms.

PANEL DISCUSSIONS

In addition to large conferences, GCC also holds panel discussions throughout the year. These events allow GCC members and guests to engage more specifi c topics such as the future of media institutions around the world, U.S.-China relations, the future of China’s fi nancial markets, and changes in Chinese corporate law. The four panels hosted in 2009 featured such panelists as New York Times columnist Peter Applebome, The Atlantic politics editor Marc Ambinder, and distinguished Columbia political science professor Robert Jervis, as well as executives from fi rms like Citibank, Morgan Stanley, and Bank of America.

SOCIAL EVENTS

In response to the great numbers of members who spend summers across major cities in China, GCC organizes networking events for members to reconnect and meet others interested in our mission. During the summer of 2009, fi ve networking sessions were hosted in the cities Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Wuhan.

CHAPTER INITIATIVESAcross our chapter network, student leaders have utilized Global China Connection to create something new. Some examples of chapters in action include:

• GCC-Harvard taking the SICA Peking University delegation to meet U.S. Senator Scott Brown during a tour of the Massachusetts State House. The impact for Harvard the chapter was tremendous. A picture taken with Senator Brown sends a strong message to potentially interested members, but the meeting will be particularly memorable for our friends from Peking University.

• GCC-Cornell hosting a campus-wide event entitled “Opportunities in China.” With 175 students in attendance, the event brought together various China-focused student organizations and academic departments. The chapter gained a great deal of event-hosting experience, and the audience at Cornell benefi ted from the information distributed at the event.

• GCC-NYU and GCC-Columbia hosting delegations from Peking University and Tsinghua University. Together they have visited corporations like JP Morgan, BCG, and King & Wood, as well as major institutions like the United Nations and the China Institute.

• GCC-SBU (Stony Brook University), in association with the Confucius Institute, hosting the annual Mid-Autumn Festival in Fall 2009, drawing a crowd of over 600. Presentations by students and performers, a variety of traditional pastimes, and an assortment of scrumptious traditional Chinese foods made the event a great success.

These groups participated in panel discussions, visits to important locations such as the United Nations, as well as a number of multinational corporations. The Tsinghua delegation was hosted by GCC’s chapters at Harvard University in Boston and Drexel University in Philadelphia for events hosted by the Harvard Institute of Politics and the Wharton China Business Society.
