Dear Fellow Members,

As I write this letter, the dedicated staff at our Club is gearing up for the fall which is always a busy season. While the staff does an incredible job of planning and executing phenomenal events for our members, they couldn’t do it without the advice and support of our committees. We are fortunate at Greensboro Country Club to have a number of very active committees made up of volunteers from a cross-section of our member-ship. Our advisory committees serve in large part to support and guide the operational team. They are truly the backbone of our Club. The volunteers who serve on these committees work hard to ensure that all members and their families enjoy their experiences at our Club. These committees also provide a terrific opportunity for members to voice their opinions and to share their knowledge and expertise.

Earlier in the year, the Board shared the 2015 Goals and Objectives with all of our committees to align our organization with Board goals. I know you will agree that there is no goal more important than membership attraction and retention, which we focus on intently. This year’s Membership Committee has worked hard to increase the value of your membership and to develop strategies to attract new members. The committee is productive and thorough and we owe a huge thanks to Monty Hagler and the entire Membership Committee for their consistent and thoughtful approach to this work. As always, please remember that sponsoring new members for our fine Club is vital to our continued growth and success.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated volunteers and to share with you a brief summary (provided by the Chairs) of the good work being done in each of our advisory committees. If you would like to become involved and share your talents with our Club, please let me or one of our vice presidents know of your interest. A complete listing of the volunteers serving on each committee can be found on the Club’s website.

Aquatics - Paula Taylor, Chair The Swim Committee welcomed Coach Katie McNerney to the GCC Blue Dolphin team family. Through the dedicated efforts of Blue Dolphin swimmers and the support of our Club members, GCC reached the Million Dollar Challenge with Swim for Cancer; a momentous achievement for an important cause!

Entertainment - Kelli Coley, ChairThe Entertainment Committee has been working this year on providing a variety of Club events that cater to all ages at our Club. Several new events were created this year including the Dueling Piano Night, the First Member Market showcasing member businesses and the very popular Member Art Show.

The Entertainment Committee will focus on three main events that will take place by the end of the year:• End of the Summer South Beach Party “Miami

Style” on Friday, September 11th.• Winter Holiday Gala on Saturday, December

12th featuring “The Atlanta Showstoppers.”• Our first Annual New Year’s Eve Party/Dance

on Thursday, December 31st with a "Ring in 2016" breakfast to follow.

The committee helps gather ideas, comments and suggestions from various club members. We work with our phenomenal GCC partner, Director of Private Events, J. Scott Harmon to make sure that we pick the perfect room, décor, lighting, invitations and food/drink selection for each event.

In addition to our committee, we have sub- committees that promote and advertise each event. The volunteers are committed to marketing and communicating with fellow members and friends to encourage member participation as well as inviting potential members to events so that they can experience the "fun" that GCC has to offer.

Fitness - Ross Harris, Chair The Fitness Committee has focused this year on facility and programmatic improvements. The WOW (Workout of the Week) has been a huge success, and even won first place at the CMAA

Idea Fair this year – a forum where clubs share their new and innovative ideas. The committee has been supportive of changes made to our group fitness fees and endorsed the scan card challenge to validate participation, staffing and amenity needs, all in an effort to entice more participation. The open house in January brought success to many of our fitness programs and another open house is scheduled for September 14th – 28th. It is the committee’s goal to consis-tently evaluate our efforts to be sure they are meeting and even exceeding the expectations of our members.

Food & Beverage - Ted Tewkesbury, ChairThe Food & Beverage Committee serves as the clearing-house for ideas, suggestions and feedback for the food and beverage operations at the Club – our largest area of operations in terms of both revenue and member participation. The committee involves itself on both the a la carte side of the food and beverage effort (i.e., our regular venues for member dining and quaffing) and the special events side (weddings, private events, etc.). Menu changes, locally sourced food/beverages, seasonal operating hours, recognition of key staff, financial performance, wine/beer/liquor lists, wine/beer dinners, and even that incredible NY Strip in the Sunset Dining Room! The committee acts as the members’ voice for these subjects and more. Have an idea or comment about food or beverage at your Club? Every committee member is standing by to hear from you.

Golf - Cabell Poindexter, Chair The Golf Committee has spent considerable time assessing and evaluating ways to improve the golf experience for our membership. They have gathered and reviewed feed-back from the tournaments in 2015 and continue to make improvements with the goal of increased participation in these events. Equally important to the golfing experience of our current membership, they have looked at ways to increase our guest play in order to expose more prospects to our Club and attract new members.

Grounds and Greens - Lloyd Peterson, ChairThe winter kill earlier this year became the driving force of the Green Committee’s work. The creation of a work schedule to minimize disruption to the play of golf and to maximize the end results was crucial for success. The budget was also altered to account for the added expense caused by the winter kill.

Tennis - Charles Wright, ChairThe Tennis Committee has worked hard this year to listen

to the ideas from various Club members and they have investigated the possibilities of implementing those ideas at GCC. This year Tom and his staff arranged the first “tennis mixer” with another tennis club (Lake Jeanette) in Greens-boro and the night was enjoyed by over twenty couples. At the Valentine’s Social, “pickleball” was introduced to our membership for the first time. It was well received, and is a sport we feel will continue to grow at GCC. New ideas and feedback are given on a daily basis and the tennis staff and Committee have worked hard to put these ideas into motion.

In addition to these active advisory committees, we have several sub committees working hard and making great progress as we delve into the details of master planning.

Master Planning Committee - Holt Gwyn, Chair Holt deserves the volunteer of the year award! Holt has masterfully worked with Clubhouse Architect Brian Idle and Golf Course Architect Keith Foster along with his committee and has led the team through over 25 iterations of a core master plan. While we’re not quite finished making adjustments based on input from other committees, past presidents and the operational team, we are well on our way to developing an exciting plan that we will share with the membership later this fall or early winter.

Golf Course Master Planning Committee - David Egerton, ChairLast year, the Board approved the selection of Keith Foster, one of the leading Golf Course Architects, for the proposed renovation design of the Irving Park golf course. David and his committee have worked hard in concert with Mr. Fos-ter and the operational team to address the issues brought forward in the 2013 Membership Survey. Their intent is to deliver an exceptional golf course renovation that our mem-bers can be very proud of and enjoy for decades to come.

Greensboro Country Club prides itself on providing a “Best in Class” experience for our members, and I believe that the members and staff working together make that happen. A huge thanks to all of our volunteers and to Steve Matlaga and his incredible team for all that they do to partner with our volunteers to make GCC the outstanding Club that it is!

As summer fades we thank you all for your ongoing loyal support of the Club. We are so glad to see you back after your summer vacations and adventures and wish all our youth a happy and successful school year. We have worked hard over the summer to bring our golf courses back into excellent condition and are currently working on refreshing Tennis at The Farm and the Irving Park Pavilion for your future enjoyment. We recognize that accomplishing this work may cause some inconvenience and we thank you for your patience and understanding as we worked through the major challenge of "winter kill" repairs to our courses! I can report from personal experience that the courses are in fantastic condition - far outpacing my golfing ability - so I hope to see you out enjoying rounds of golf with friends soon! It takes a village to deliver positive experiences to our Members and Guests every day and throughout the year. I am so deeply appreciative of the level of commitment and passion for hospitality and service to our members that our whole team exhibits every day. This positive energy is enhanced by the support of the Board and Committees not only as partners in developing reasonable policy, fun ideas and events, but the genuine mutual interest of driving education and personal development of the staff. We all recognize that this partnership drives "change" and we are all hopeful that you and your families see and feel the changes around the Club in the positive manner in which it is intended. As in Mrs. Bernstein's article, I want to extend a huge "thank you" to all of our volunteers around the Club who help guide our energy and intent and give so unselfishly of their valuable time. Like Mrs. Bernstein, I also want to invite you to join us in our continuous improvement journey if you have a particular area of passion or expertise you would like to share.

The creativity of the team continues to make me proud and I was especially pleased with the turnout for our first "Yappy Hour." It was great to meet your furry family members. Rumor has it that our fresh baked "doggie treats" will be sold at our Holiday Bazaar this year! Looking through this newsletter I am amazed at the variety and volume of special events we have slated, and encourage you to try something new like the "We Love Dessert" night. No matter where you have dinner that weekend Chef Ben and Chef Laurie will finish off your evening at the Club with unbelievable dessert creations. You will notice that we have theme events scheduled such as the "Family-Style (yes, kids too) Carolina Seafood Boil" at the Donald Ross Terrace complete with butcher paper on the table and buckets of yum! Please make sure you are signed up to receive email updates and you "Like" our Facebook page, to stay up-to-date regarding our events and impor-tant Club information.

My sincere hope is that you continue to enjoy and support your Club, bring guests and sponsor new members. Our ongoing theme has been positive membership growth in 2015, which we have not experienced in over a decade. We continue to realize positive net membership growth through August, but encourage you to communicate any potential new members to Brittany Mitchell ([email protected]) who will be able to assist with any questions or facilitate a tour for a potential member. We can accomplish this important objective together! As always, I welcome your comments, observations and suggestions as the team and I work to consistently exceed your experience expectations at GCC.

Welcome New Members!

Membership MessageAs we head into fall, our Club is in solid shape from a membership perspective. Thanks to the support of dozens of members, as well as the volunteer efforts of the Membership Committee and Board, we have brought in 36 new members through August and welcomed back nine former members. We have also experienced fewer resignations of current members than we had projected, with 25 members leaving the Club since the beginning of the year.

Strong growth in membership benefits our Club in many ways, but it is particularly important for our financial health. Initiation fees (which have now been raised to $30,000 for new members), capital dues and operating dues all contribute to the ongoing programs, services and activities that provide value to our members. It also is a key driver in determining the dues of every member each year. Our goal this year is to have net positive growth – to bring in more members than leave us. It has been more than eight years since this last happened.

To encourage every member to help identify and bring forward qualified new members, the Club is offering a special incentive through the end of the year. Any member who sponsors a new member will receive three months dues credit (equal to the dues that are paid by the new member based on their age and membership category).

From the ChefI hope you all have had a wonderful summer, but it is now time to get very serious about the important things in life- School and Football! Fall is my personal favorite time of year, with many trips to the Farmer’s Market,

drives to the mountains, Oktoberfest style beers, Oregon Ducks football and braised dishes coming back to the menu.

Continuing education is very important as a chef, or any professional for that matter. I had the wonderful opportunity this August to attend the American Culinary Federation’s National Conference. There was great camaraderie amongst approximately a thousand chefs from around the globe over the entire week. I was able to attend multiple classes that were presented by many wonderful culinarians, and look forward to initiating some interesting and creative ideas over the next year. There were many competitions ranging from chocolate pieces

and vegetable carvings, to hot and cold food preparations. I have included some of my favorite photos from Culinary Team USA and individual chefs that also entered various food categories.

Your culinary staff has made some great improvements in many areas this year. In the Family Grill/1909 we purchased new salad bar inserts and enlarged our selection of offer-ings. Remember this is a great quick option when you’re on the fly coming from golf, tennis or fitness. We have also purchased some new platters, service ware and presenta-tion pieces for unique displays in banquets. We have a new banquet menu in the works with a deep focus on farm to fork and local seasonal items.

Along with falling leaves and cooler weather, fall brings new menus throughout the Club. Try Chef Billy’s new apple pancake or maybe the huevos rancheros with the spicy black bean cakes, chorizo and queso fresco with fresh salsa verde in the Family Grille. We have really focused on all new house-made pancakes, a healthier multi-grain pancake and you must try the blueberry multi-grain cakes. We also have an all new menu for kids, so grab your parent and come check it out!

The Sunset Room will feature fantastic menu items that will update as procure the freshest ingredients possible. We have the best Prime NY Strip in town along with different dock-to-door fish featured weekly. Our three-course prix fixe Chefs Table Menu will also make its return. Be sure to mark your calendar for Friday, October 16th for our fall oyster night featuring steamed, roasted and raw oysters along with our regular a la carte menu in the Sunset Room, Bar and Terrace.

Chef Jeff at the Farm will be conjuring up mischief of one kind or another as we start Halloween weekend off with our annual Hayride on Friday, October 30th. And for more Halloween festivities, stop by Irving Park on October 31st for superhero and villain trick or treating.

Banquet season is upon us, so please let me know how we can help plan a special event. It’s not just about the food but making lasting “Best in Class” memories.

USTA Junior Team TennisGCC is preparing for the USTA Junior Team Tennis this fall season. This league gives our juniors a chance to compete against other junior players of their ability throughout the city in a team format. Teams will compete in the age groups of 10 & under, 12 & under, 14 & under and 18 & under team competition.

Once registration is complete, the GCC professional staff will place our juniors on appropriate teams according to ability and will be notified to what team will be a part of the first week of practice. Matches and team practices will begin the first week of September. Matches will be played on Friday afternoons throughout September and October. Juniors will need a current USTA Membership to participate in team competition.

Junior Golf ChampionshipJackson Neff won the GCC Boy’s Junior Golf Championship with a remarkable 63-66-129 total on the Irving Park course. The first round began with an onslaught of birdies as Jackson Neff posted a nifty eight under par 63, conceivably the lowest Junior Club

Championship ever in the 106 year history of our Club. A combined nines of 32-31 was the resulting effort from Neff to post an eight-stroke advantage over Nicholas Mills with 71 and nine ahead of Nicholas Poole with 72. Jackson’s card included one eagle on the second hole and seven birdies with a single bogey on seventeen.

The second round included a slight misstep by Neff as a rare drive found the Out of Bounds on the 14th hole marring a strongly credible round. His recovery from the discrepancy on the par 5 hole was admirable as he scored a 66 - five under par - and an impressive 129 total. Winning the title of Junior Club Champion by 14 strokes over second place finisher Thomas Mayes who posted a 73-70 for a tie with Nicholas Poole (72-71).

In the Girls Division, Tatum Neff (Jackson’s sister) was a model of steady play with 88-82 for a 170 to skate by Maclean Shepherd. Tatum was not to be denied as she persevered to the winning spot and her entry into the Ladies Club Championship to compete along-side our lady adult golfers.

In the age divisions, Whit Edwards and Ben Rightsell were in a dead heat tie for the 13-14 year group. Forming scores or 71-77 for Whit and 75-73 for Ben, the two were gathered for a sudden death play-off for the champion’s trophy. Whit Edwards prevailed in the playoff for the title. Andrew Plate was the third place finish with 73-78.

Following his older brother’s foot-steps to the Boy’s 11-12 Division winner’s podium, Shuford Edwards scored a 40-41 = 81 forging a two-stroke victory over Dawson McAl-hany with 43-40.

And sterling play was the display of talent in the Boy’s 10 and under class with battle between Luke No-lan and Ford Gordan. After a first day 39 and 37 respectively, Ford could feel the breathing down the neck from Luke. Bot had improved numbers with a 35 from each com-petitor on the second day for Ford Gordon to be the champion by two over Luke Nolan.

Junior InterclubAnd we should give honorable mention to the fantastic play of our Junior Interclub team who recently played against Alamance and won by a tremendous 53 strokes! The lopsided margin was heralded by Mack Pearsall with 68, Nicholas Poole with 70 and Kevin Carlock at 71 along with Ben Rightsell’s 77. In the younger division, Ford Gordon led the 9-hole scores with 36 buoyed by his teammates Will Jordan and Ben Jordan with 39. This match was played on the home turf of the opposing team at Alamance.

President’s Cup ChampionshipEgerton and Gioffre Breeze to Member-Member Title; Schlosser Garners a Coup with WiswallA starting Irving Park flurry of seven birdies and one eagle from Ryan Gioffre with pars and one birdie from David Egerton put the team to 10 under par 61 for a substantial lead in the first round. A solid day two nine under par score 63 at the Farm coupled with first day 61 added up to a 124 total, 19 under par for 36 holes. Second place went to the fine play of Jay Kirkpatrick and Mark Wilson who were nine strokes in arrears with 69-64 totaling 133.

The Net Overall Division competition was a spirited contest with Nathan Duggins and Brad Hayes leading first day with 61, a narrow one stroke ahead of Jim Schlosser and Lawrence Wiswall. Four teams were poised for catch up at 7 under par 64 that included Kevin Green/John Stratton, Bill Lyon/Russ Hunt, Jim Molinaro/Patrick Theissman, and Ross Hamilton/Charles Wright. But Schlosser and Wiswall were the only team to maintain the torrid pace on the Sunday moving day as their Farm score of 63 moved them into the limelight of Net Champions.

In the flight divisions, Buk Pearce and Philip Ray raced to the win in the senior Division with a 124 for a five-stroke advantage over Jerry Clark and Bob Caldwell and Gary Michalove and Britt Preyer. Third Flight honors were secured by Parker Burke and Tyson Pugh (129) followed by Jonathan Peddrick and Chip Permar (130).

In the second flight, Jim Molinaro and Patrick Theissman held on to their narrow lead to skim by Burns Blackwell/Matt King and JJ. Marus/Mikael /Svensson with a 13 under par 130, a mere single stroke separating the champs. First flight was also hotly contested as Russ Hunt/Bill Lyon swept by two teams by one swing of the niblick, posting a 139 to edge Fred Black/Joel Mills and Daniel Craft/Brett Schulman.

The President’s Flight winner for this year is Kevin Green and John Stratton leading the flight with a 132 for a trio of strokes ahead of three teams Inclike Mattingly/Gary Rankinl and Sam Teden/Stephen Twilley.

The Summer of 2015As predicted in my last newsletter article, the summer of 2015 was very challenging to say the least. The staff at the two courses put in a lot of long, hard hours working to get the courses to recover from a very substantial bout of winter kill. Between the two courses, the team

cut out and shoveled up six acres of dead turf and turned right around and sodded those same areas. That equates to shoveling 50 dump truck loads of dead sod and laying approximately 28 truckloads of new sod. In addition to sodding damaged areas, sprigs were planted on another 12 acres (nine acres of Irving Park fairways and three acres on the Farm driving range). It is our goal to have all of this repair work completed by early September.

With that said, the plan was never to repair each and every damaged area on the two courses. Numerous small damaged areas scattered throughout the two courses will be deferred until 2016. Deferred areas will generally fall into one of two categories. The first will be small areas that will continue to shrink until the growing conditions slow down later this fall. The second areas are mostly heavily shaded areas underneath large tree stands that were not deemed integral to the look or play of the course.

None of this work could have been accomplished with-out a team of employees totally dedicated to main-taining the Club’s vision of “Best in Class” for all its facilities. As a great many members have expressed their appreciation this year for the staff’s efforts for this large scale repair, I also would like to thank everyone involved from the membership who supplied the resources and support to the team in the field whose hard work resulted in a dramatic and successful turnaround in the playability and aesthetics of both the courses.

From the Pool DeckCan you believe that summer has already come and gone? It has been a blast with parties by the pools, Mini Dolphin and Sports Camps and Blue Dolphin Swimming. Thank you to our members and their guests who came out to the pools this season and participated in our events and activities.

Also, thank you to all of our GCC Blue Dolphin swimmers and their families. Swim team is a five-week commitment, and our program succeeds only with your continued sup-port and involvement. One Farm Pool Record was broken this summer, and we had several Blue Dolphins finish first during Day One of the City Meet Championship. Congratu-lations to Isley Ortmann, Mason Duggins, Peyton Adcox, Ja-cob Shepperson, Burke Sullivan, Copeland Jones, Ross and Will Hamilton and the Girls 9-10 200-yard Freestyle Relay team on their blue ribbon swims! Swim for CancerFor 26 years, the GCC Blue Dolphins have made a pledge to lead the Greensboro swim community in the Swim for Cancer campaign. Over the years, hundreds of Blue Dolphin swimmers have dedicated

their time and energy to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Our 2014 year-to-date total was over $954,000.

As you may know, our goal this season was to be the first swim team to raise over $1,000,000 for cancer research. The Swim Committee requested member support for a club-wide program “GCC Families Fighting Cancer,” and we are very proud to announce that we achieved our goal, raising $50,000. With the support and participation of our mem-bers and our Blue Dolphin swimmers, we are the first team to surpass the one million dollar mark, raising $1,004,000! Thank you to all the Club members who graciously and generously supported our swimmers in this event.
