Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner and Marcel Fassler drove the winning number 4 car with Gavin holding off teammate Antonia Garcia in the number 3 car. The two finished side by side with Gavin taking the checkered flag by a matter of inches. Each of the Corvettes completed 722 laps for 2,570.32 miles. The margin of victory set a Rolex 24 record. NAME BADGE DRAWING The The name badge this month was $40 for a lucky person. Just like last month whereby Walt Bacon was present but didn’t qualify for the name badge drawing since he didn’t have his badge on. Well, it happened again this month. Harry Barnett was present for the meeting but did NOT have his TVS club badge on his shirt. Consequently, next month's drawing will be $50. Lesson learned – need your badge on – you never know when you will be lucky. 50/50 DRAWING The 50/50 collection was $135 this month. A potential new member, Tony Dow, was asked to reach into the 50/50 bucket and to please pull out just one ticket. The lucky person happened to be sitting right next to him and she kept saying “pull mine, pull mine.” Well, Tony obliged and pulled Marci O’Brien’s winning ticket. She received $67 while the Club received $68. According to my information (which only goes back to 2012) Marci has never won the 50/50 collection.

Congratulations to all!!!

Our Car Show April 9, 2016 is coming along very well. This will be our 41st annual Car Show “All GM Beach Classic” (Note we are still trying to fine that catchy title). This year we will celebrate three member cars on Car Show tee shirt. You can see the back design on our Car Show flyer in the newsletter and on our web site. Each pre-registered entrant will receive a shirt. And all volunteers signing up to work our Show will receive one.

This year 50 trophies will be awarded. You can sponsor a trophy for $25 which will then have your name/dedication on the plaque as the sponsor. If you, neighbor, or business wish to sponsor a trophy please let Chuck Hammer know ASAP.

Linda Glaza sent out invitations to potential sponsors in January and we are receiving many raffle/silent auctions prizes. Most will come in March. Don Popovich has been advertising our Show with advertisements and flyers at car shows and local businesses. We have a banner ad in www.socalcarculture.com, visit their site for a look. Rob Weimer has been contacting potential vendors.

Jack Walter has volunteered to coordinate chairs, tables and pop-ups. If you can loan the Car Show any tables or pop-ups, please let him know, he will return from Australia in a couple weeks. Chairs will come from ours at WIN.

Linda Tully has been distributing raffle coupons. If you need more please contact her. Our raffle is a highlight of our Show.

Prizes from sponsors and club members draw interest from all Car Show participants. It not only raises funds for our charity but gives the Car Show participants another focus in anticipation of award.

Please bring your raffle/silent auction donation to the March meeting.

We are beginning the list of volunteers for working the Car Show. If you would like to help and get a Show tee shirt please let us know. Those who volunteered at the Feb. general meeting do not need to resign up. However, those who signed up for early site preparation or parking can help by doing double coverage with a later volunteer need. Judging has been considerably simplified this year so don’t be afraid to help. We need volunteers for the following (leads are listed): • Registration –John and Linda Tully –

Start at 7:45 AM • Parking – Dick Whitford – Start at 7:00

AM • Chief Judge GM Cars and Trucks – Tony

Giamberdino Start at 9:45 AM • Competition Talley - Raul Rodrigues

start at 9:00 AM • 50/50 Ticket Sales – NEED A LEAD start

at 9:00 AM

Our 2015 Car Show Planning Committee meets every month and any Vette Set member is welcome to come and contribute. Wednesday, March 9, 7:00 PM at the Tully’s is our next meeting.

AWARDS BANQUET PORTS-OF-CALL RESTAURANT SATURDAY JAN 30, 2016

HISTORICAL REPORT

Linda Tully, Sharon Cowley & Anton Wijenayake planned the annual awards banquet. This year was special because it marked the end of the one year celebration of the club’s 50th anniversary. Diners were treated to a choice of beef, salmon or chicken as well as one alcoholic beverage or two soft drinks. Desert was cheesecake. Pat Cowley prepared an hour long video of the club’s activities during 2015 and these were projected on a screen by equipment provided by David Tavares. During speaking portions of the awards banquet, the sound was turned off and after the banquet and presentations, David played music from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

The Setup

Linda, drawing from her Swiss heritage, was in charge of making financial arrangements with the restaurant and maintaining the budget. Anton’s son-in-law, Jon, designed the centerpiece. His original design called for the tire to be fabricated from Styrofoam. This turned out to be expensive and time consuming. John Tully found inflatable tires with rims on sale at Harbor Freight. The only drawback, was the outgassing from the tires. John tried a number techniques to freshen them up before the banquet. When Sharon picked up the arrangements from the flower shop, the florist was asked if they smelled OK and her diplomatic response was, “It will fit the theme of a car club banquet.”

Appointees: Marlis, George, Raul, John, Santiago, Jennifer, Carolyn, Sharon & Linda

The By-Laws state that the following four awards are to be presented at the banquet each year: 1. The Bert Pierce Memorial Participation Award was given to John Tully for being the most active member. 2. The Jerry Belcher Memorial Outstanding New Member Award went to David Tavares. 3. The Hard Luck Award, and 4. The Glen Child Perpetual Memorial Award—Member of the Year went to Sharon & Pat Cowley and was presented by George Person, Jr., last year’s recipient. [Note: The hard luck award was earned by running over a “road gator” (a delaminated truck retread) in Tennessee and needing 3 rental cars to make it home. If the by-laws hadn’t been recently revised, Pat could have qualified for an additional award. ]

Car Show. John Tully, the chief honcho, received See’s candy and the “helper bees” each went home with a very nice, hand crafted plaque.

12

John Tully gave George Person, Jr. a giant photo for writing the cover story of our club in the NCCC Blue Bars magazine. The cover showed a photo of our members & cars taken by Anton’s son-in-law’s brother, Zack, using Raul’s SUV and a step ladder.

couple, Jane & John

Summary. This was a fun banquet that emphasized a faster pace and light hearted, personal awards. Those respon-sible for production found out that it was a great deal of work. Now we know why Fred retired from making trophies and Jan

just plain retired. Pat David won the drawing Up, up & away? Winner
