Early History

• 15th century BC. First mention of the city of Gaza .

Samson was delivered into bondage by Delilah.

13th century BC the area was taken over by the Philistines.

Recent History• 1517 Gaza fell to the Ottoman empire who ruled it from 1517-1799. • 1799 Napoleon captured Gaza City in. • 1832 Muhammad Ali made Gaza a part of Egypt in• 1919 Gaza became part of the British Mandate of Palestine

1947-1949• 1947 Partition plan, the Gaza area was to

become part of a new Arab state.

24 February 1949 the Israel–Egypt Armistice AgreementEgypt remained in control of a strip of land along the coast, which became known as the Gaza Strip.

22 September, 1948 All-Palestine Governmentwas proclaimed in Gaza City by the Arab League.

Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip or Egypt were issued All-Palestine passports

1949 - 1979• 1956, the Suez affair Gaza Strip occupied by Israel. Israel withdraw.• 1959, Gamal Abdul Nasser annul the All-Palestine government• June 1967 The Six-Day War. Gaza is controlled by Israel military administration. Gush Katif, 21 settlements comprising 20% of the total territory.

• March 1979 Israel and Egypt signed the Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty. Settle the international border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. Egypt renounced all territorial claims to the region beyond the

international border.

Intifada & Palestinian Government

• 1988 First Intifada• May 1994, Palestinian-Israeli agreements, a phased transfer of

Current Status• Gaza does not belong to any sovereign state.• Israel and Egypt closed its border crossings with Gaza.• Israel forigen Minister, Zipi Livne– “Gaza is no longer occupied,

Israel does not exercise effective control or authority over any land or institutions in the Gaza Strip”

• Palestine Authority Chairman, Mahmoud Abbas stated, "the legal status of the areas slated for evacuation has not changed.“
