The Great Gatsby follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes

to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings,

and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to amysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and

her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the

captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within

and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and

high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

    Carey Mulligans Red-Carpet Pantsuits: A CelebrationBy: Maureen OConnor/Monday, May 6th, 2013

Carey Mulligan wore a Lanvin tuxedo to last night's special preMet Ball screening ofThe Great Gatsby, her fourth red-carpet tuxedo this year. The look has more in commonwith Jay Gatsby than Daisy Buchanan a clever way to acknowledge the film'ssignature fashions without looking like she's in costume. In a world overrun with glitterand tulle, the woman who dares to wear pants must be celebrated.

    1. The Modernist Tux

Last night's tuxedo jacket was cropped at the waist and featured one angular whitelapel, adding a "modernist twist." The ensemble is from Lanvin's spring 2013 collection;Mulligan paired it with Brian Atwood heels and minimal hair and makeup.

    2. The Inverse Tux

For a Good Morning America appearance last week, Mulligan wore the inverse of lastnight's outfit: a cropped white jacket with black lapels, also from Lanvin spring 2013. Alow-cut neck gave the look a Bianca Jagger vibe, while asymmetrical ChristianLouboutin heels added whimsy.

    3. The Tuxedo-Cape

Mulligan's most unusual tuxedo may have been the Victoria Beckham fall 2013 tuxedo-cape she wore to Tiffany's Blue Book Ball in April. Whereas Beckham showed the look

with a midi-length skirt, Mulligan returned to her beloved peg-leg pant silhouette. Addthe masculinizing effect of Carey's pulled-back hair, and the boxy look recalls HelmutNewton's late-sixties photographs of Yves Saint Laurent's Le Smoking.

    4. The "I'm With the Band" Tux

Mulligan's favorite tuxedo design house, however, seems to be Lanvin. Attending theGrammy's with husband Marcus Mumford in February, the actress re-created theopening look from Lanvin's spring 2013 collection but without the difficult-to-wear gold chest brace. As Paloma Picasso noted of YSL's suit, the beauty of femaletuxes is that they "made our lives easier."

Much Carey-ing On With GatsbyTuesday, May 7th, 2013

Its still Gatsby insanity. Carey Mulligan (above) tells Confidenti@l that she used noneof herself to play Daisy Buchanan. I dont really tend to use my own life when Imworking. Its much more fun to sort of invent a new person, she told us at one of themany Gatsby screenings around town. Mulligan also says shes over the makeup ittakes to look fabulous while promoting the film. I start doing it as soon as I get in thecar, pulling pins out, pulling off eyebrows, she said. If you ask us, she doesnt needmuch fuss.

OK, its GreatBy: Cindy Adams/Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Enough with The Great Gatsbys great p.r. Its probably even getting screenings inbasements in Bulgaria.

DirectorBaz Luhrmanns costume- designer wife, Catherine Martin, on researchingthe 20s-era wardrobe: Although its a period piece, we wanted New York to lookincredibly modern in those days. I studied in the Metropolitan Museum library, FashionInstitute library, Cond Nast library, digital libraries, sketches, old magazines, videos, aslew of books, online resources, which are prodigious and a wealth of information. Tookme four years.

At one showing, David Schwimmerschwam by Europes high priestess fashionjournalist Suzy Menkes here for the Met Ball and dying to see this movies clothes.Schwimmer was tieless. And designerPrabal Gurung, in a green and white footballoutfit, led a squad of equally outfitted quarterbacks.

Not there for the wardrobe, Oliver Stone said: Im not going to sit and redirect it. I lookforward to watching this. I read the book many years ago.

David Koch: Weall know the book. Gatsby is a great slice of Americana. I rememberthose old days of living that big fast partying life of course, thats before I met mygorgeous Julia. Added gorgeous Julia, whose gorgeous outfit was gorgeous: Our 17thwedding anniversarys coming up.

Michael Kors, who knows from making dresses and handbags: I just gave $5 million toGods Love We Deliver. Theyre putting up a SoHo building, which might be named forme. Not bad considering Im a guy who cant cook.

Among the crowd of young uns guys with drawers below their belly buttons, femaleswith skirts above came Silas and Celia Chou. Billionaire Mr. Chou is the moneybehind Michael Kors. Mrs. Chous bag, however, was Chanel.

Through the scrum at MoMAs private theater, publicist Peggy Siegal pushed methrough some private door into some elevator to some private cubicle on some floor, where leading lady Carey Mulligan was sequestered.

Carey: Im wearing a black tux by Lanvin. Im obsessed with it. I dont own it yet, but Iplan to. Im afraid I now must think what Ill wear with it.

Besides her fashion fear was her fear of this huge movie: Its my biggest film so far. Iwas nervous how to handle it. I worried about playing the character. Anticipations theworst because I felt daunted by the role. How do you play her?

And theres the 3-D aspect. I felt no particular difference while making it, but to see the

monitor afterward we had to put on those glasses, which were being held with bigsticks.

Ive already seen the completed movie once. Difficult to see yourself blown up so bigon this large screen. I cant bear looking at myself. Others in my position probably havethe same reaction at times. Its awful. Difficult for me to watch me. You catch all sorts ofimperfections. I kind of slouch down and hug my knees so I dont stare too closely. I popback up out of my seat a bit more when others are on-screen.

Australias Baz Luhrmann lives in New York but filmed this in Australia: Im from theWest. So a little farther west from LA like a long way west and theres Australia.

We have homes both places. My kids go to school in both places. This is their adoptedhome. Australias the roots, Americas the wings.

We shot there because its cheaper. Also our longtime collaborators are there.Problems were remaking that terrain where theres no deciduous trees into LongIsland. But we did make use of what we had. Like my old Christian Brothers collegebecame Gatsbys mansion.

    Leonardo DiCaprio

The Great Gatsby already has an eye on next years Oscars. Amid a string of starry

screenings last week, the film that was once slated to come out last Dec. 25 played for

New York Academy members at Lighthouse International, where guests included Meg

Ryan, Debra Winger, Sir Howard Stringer, Edgar Bronfman, Darren Aronofsky,

    Joel Grey and Neil Simon.

On Sunday, the movie heading to open Cannes next week had a pre-Met Ball screening

for a fashion-forward crowd, including Katy Perry (who arrived at MoMA with an

entourage on bikes and slipped into a side entrance) and Gwen Stefani, who arrived

with Dasha Zhukova as her date, designers Vera Wang, Prabal Gurung andYigalAzrouel and power players David Geffen and David Koch.

Stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan walked the red carpet, but dutiful dad

Tobey Maguire chose to attend his sons birthday instead. Anna Wintourhosted a

dinner during the screening for the Met Ball committee, which Mulligan and Gatsby

costume designerCatherine Martin (directorBaz Luhrmanns wife) hit before

appearing at a Top of the Standard after-party, where guests included Oliver Stone and

Kristen Wiig, who cracked up VIPs while holding court in a back room.

Also at the Peggy Siegal Co. bash, hosted by MAC Cosmetics and Quintessentially

Lifestyle, DJ Brendan Fallis showed off unreleased tunes from the Gatsby

    soundtrack, featuring Jay-Z.

Saturday night, DiCaprio hit another pre-Met Ball bash Harry Joshs annual Hair Ball

at the Jane Hotel. Some guests blanched when his ex, Gisele Bundchen, and her

husband, Tom Brady, arrived. A spy said, Leo was keeping his distance from Gisele,

who was with Tom on the opposite side of the room, and Tom came all decked out in

a white outfit, looking like Gatsby himself! But Leo was surrounded on a couch full of

models. The party also drew Karolina Kurkova, Ron Burkle, Hilary Rhoda, Jason

Binn, Tony Shafrazi and Vivi Nevo.

Gastby Takes Manhattan: Leo, Jay-Z and Baz Turn NYC into

    a Two Week Pop-UpBy: Nate Freeman/Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Early last Thursday morning, Leonardo DiCaprio was sitting in the basement of The

Darby as a long line of girls came toward him carrying bursting bottles of champagne

affixed with firecrackers. Jay-Z held court in a corner booth. Tobey Maguire danced on a

banquette. And Mr. DiCaprioJay Gatsbylooked on with a smile. The pitch of the

screams swung higher as fiery droplets of bubbly got closer to the movie star.

Do you come to these parties often? asked my companion, her lips at my ear.

Jay-Z was now bouncing to Who Gon Stop Me, as Jake Gyllenhaal and FlorenceWelch rapped along, standing on a table, towering above Carey Mulligan, Tom Hardy,

Jamie Foxx and other Hollywood royalty.

Perhaps I do go to a lot of parties, but I had not been invited to this one. In school at

Duke, I became close with a man who had gone into film and went on to work on The

Great Gatsby, Baz Luhrmanns new adaptation of the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. And

    34/147

just as Fitzgerald got a lot of leverage from his Princeton chums, my friend had

smuggled me into The Darby, which came after the films world premiere, earlier that

night at Lincoln Center, and the official after-party, in the ballroom of the Plaza Hotel.

No, I dont often come to parties like this, I told my companion.

Corks popped from the flaming bottles, champagne spilled into glasses and the glasses

overflowed. I approached Leo in his little nook.

We spoke earlier, on the red carpet, Mr. DiCaprio said, his oceans of blue eyes

    twinkling at me.

And there are more events to come, I responded.

And what a string of events it was: a spree of cocktail functions, high-fashion fetes atfancy boutiques, exclusive screenings in secret locations, a sprawling red-carpet

premiere that attracted crowds for blocks, a boozy lunch at the New York Public Library,

a boozy lunch at the Fitzgerald Suite at the Plaza Hotel, a boozy dinner at the ballroom

in the Plaza Hotel, a breakfast at Tiffany, a champagne supper at Brooks Brothers, a

star-studded bash at Prada, a Peggy Siegal screening at MoMA followed by a giant

bash at the Boom Boom Room, and a Cinema Society screening at HBO headquarters

followed by a giant bash at The Lambs Club.

The parties seemingly never ended, as Warner Bros.thanks to an unimaginable

promotional budget (though representatives would not disclose an exact figure) and

countless corporate tie-insmanaged to recreate a run of blowouts similar to those that

    took place on West Egg.

It made sense that they had spun off the movies party-heavy storyline into actual

glamorous bashes. Mr. Luhrmann took 1920s New York City and made it his own,

running the then-emerging skyline through his saturated filter and engineering a

boisterous, three-dimensional, thoroughly vibrating version of our city (though the film

was shot not on our streets but in Australia, the directors native land).

With that same approachone not too different from Jay Gatsbys own Icarus-esque

hubrisapplied to the films promotion, hes turned the actual metropolis into a Gatsby-

themed pop-up, a traveling party thats the best possible billboard for the film, a series

of super-fancy luxury events that eclipses any movies promotional rol l-out in recent

    history.

For two weeks, The Great Gatsby has overtaken NYC.

The first shindig was at Brooks Brothers, the store where two New Haven men in

Fitzgeralds novella May Day go shopping for Welsh Margotson collars. Mannequins

bestrode the sloped plaster centerpieces and seemed to be sashaying to the music,

which at the moment played Lana Del Reys Young and Beautiful, the love theme

    from The Great Gatsby.

After a few coupes of Mot champagne I spotted Mr. Luhrmann, looking dapper enough

to have stepped off his own movies set. We chatted about my friend from college, and

then I asked about this impressive run of Gatsby-esque parties.

A little partying never killed anyoneor, well, maybe it did, he said, referring to (spoileralert!) Gatsbys death at the end of the movie. Immediately, the parties and the glamour

is whats attractive. But when we find out that Gatsbys doing that for a different reason,

its why the book is so enduring. Youre attracted to it, youre seduced by it, but then yo u

find yourself going on this human journey.

This humans journey took him next to a screening at Warner Bros. headquarters, one

of a few screenings set up for those who could score seats. The film is massive, a

sensory overload, a wildly kaleidoscopic spectacle that somehow manages to stay

relatively faithful to the Great American Novel, all building to that monumental party

scene, set to Rhapsody in Blue.

After the credits rolled, I raced downtown to the party at the Prada flagship.

The official premiere, the following night, engulfed the whole of Lincoln Centers grand

arcade. An army of photographers and journalists jockeyed for snaps and quotes.

Attendees in black tie downed cocktails on the balcony overhead, laughing and waving

to people who couldnt see them, as a giant banner for Samsung, one of the movies

(many) sponsors, hung below, visible to the masses. And finally the stars, each one

positively gleaming, showed their famous faces.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Baz Luhrmann and Carey Mulligan.

I caught Mr. DiCaprio as he was about to go in and watch himself enthrall the audience.

What I loved about Jay Gatsby was this idea of this iconic American dreamer, Mr.

DiCaprio told me, his eyes wandering up to the sky. We all can identify with the

American dreamerthe man coming from nothing and manifesting his own destiny.

With no entre into the party at the Plaza Hotel, I passed the time with cocktails at the

Whitney Museums annual Art Party, sifting through crowds of young strivers who had

purchased tickets and budding socialites with enough connections to land a spot on the

host committee. It was the next generation of upper-crust New York grabbing cocktail

    after cocktail.

Darby if you can swing it, came the text message from my college friend, and I hopped

in a cab that zoomed between the monolithic towers of Midtown and down into the West

Village. The feverish party rang out for hours. I drank scotch from Mr. DiCaprios table. I

dipped a girl low dancing to Roaring Twenties jazz.

Somehow, the cast (sans Mr. DiCaprio, who had hit 1OAK following The Darby) made it

to a lunch the next morning at the New York Public Library, looking fresh as ever. Event

host David Remnick was nice enough to take a break from editing The New Yorker to

chat with Mr. Luhrmann about the research that he and his wife, Gatsby costumedesigner Catherine Martin, had done into the inner workings of Fitzgeralds soul.

C.M. and I, we imagined we were Scott and Zelda, Mr. Luhrmann said to the room,

where Anna Wintour sat with literary heavyweights like Jeffrey Eugenides, Maureen

Dowd, Calvin Tomkins, Philip Gourevitch and Ta Obreht. C.M. went a bit too far with

    the champagne exploration

    37/147

Baz, you have a much bigger problem with the bottle than I do! his wife said.

Everyone reached for his or her wine glass.

Then it was time for a panel discussion with the cast moderated by the biographer Dr.

Amanda Foreman, who commenced perhaps historys most glamorous book club with

Ms. Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Mr. Maguire and Isla Fisher.

Not long after the movie-star book club ended, I ran into Mr. Edgerton, who plays Tom

    Buchanan.

You read Fitzgeralds letters, and its clear he just wanted so bad to be famous, the

actor said. He just wanted to get laid and be famous.

I wondered, aloud, who doesnt want to get laid and be famous?

    Mr. Edgerton shrugged.

    I havent met anyone.

Mr. Luhrmann then grabbed me and walked me through the grand hallways of the New

York Public Library and out the towering front entrance, where a handful of fans stood

beside the two lions calling out for the director, asking for autographs.

    38/147

Wasnt The Darby so fun last night, Nate? Mr. Luhrmann said, walking down the

massive steps. It just felt like the Jazz Age again?

The director bounced as if fully refreshed. He was the perfect perennial host for The

Great Gatsby. On the street, a car was waiting for him. It would take him to a television

interview. Before he ducked in, he went for a double-pump handshake.

Ill see you Sunday at the Boom Boom Room, he said. Another party!

I arrived early on Sunday night only to find the space empty, devoid of famous faces.

Through the Boom Boom Rooms floor-to-ceiling windows was a glittering panorama:

the Empire State Building to the north, and to the south the Hudson River snaking down

to lower Manhattan and the unfinished Freedom Tower.

Then things picked up. As the cast took their time to arrive from the screening at the

Museum of Modern Art, Katy Perry showed up wearing a colorful outfit she claimed was

inspired by Frida Kahlo. (Ms. Perry had been at the Prada event, too.)

Its very of Gatsby, its very befitting, she told me, speaking about the run of parties.

Ms. Perry later joined Mr. DiCaprio, Ms. Mulligan, Cuba Gooding Jr. and others in a

back section of the Top of the Standard, surrounded by bodyguards. I walked in and

saw Baz Luhrmann, who pulled me over to his booth. The director began talkingabout The Great Gatsby in an intelligent way. I smiled. It was a conversation I had been

searching for amid the two weeks of glad-handing, petty arguments, studio politics and

celebrity publicists. Mr. Luhrmann talked with stunning earnestness about how The

Great Gatsby is the American Hamlet, about how Hamlet is the Bible, about how the

New Testament is the first cinematic document, and about how, in the Gospels, Jesus

Christ dies at 33, much like the protagonist of his newest film.

What more could I ask of this director, after all of these events at posh places in New

York City devoted to his movie, all of them masterminded on some level by Mr.Luhrmann himself, the ringleader, the puppeteerthe boy from Australia who changed

    his name and became famous?

Its like youre Gatsby yourself, I said.

the first night. So much for Quintessentially Lifestyles intimate private screening ofWarner Bros. The Great Gatsby.

During Lurhmanns intro,Vera Wang attempted to take her seat in the second row.Thats whenCatherine Martin, the pics production and costume designer, told thefashion designer she was better off sitting in the back where she could get a better 3Deffect.Apparently my wife is directing now, Luhrmann quipped.

Michael Kors and Valentino also came out in support on the eve of the fashions world2013 Met Ball. Valentino, especially, had Martin starstruck.I feel absolutely terrified, she gushed. Im a huge fan of his work. He has consistentlyover his career made some of the most beautiful gowns.

Well, obviously Im super-psyched about the soundtrack,Solange Knowles said ofbrother-in-law Jay-Zs work. I think Jay filled his shoes incredibly and he has suchgreat taste in music, Im surprised he hasnt done this earlier. (For the record, Luhmanncalls Jay-Z the other Jay.)

Knowles is actually a fan of another Fitzgerald: I read some biographies on ZeldaFitzgerald a couple of summers ago and just became totally captivated by her as awriter and an artist and how much she actually inspired Scott, and how she was theheart and soul to a lot of his stories.

Leonard DiCaprio Introduces Baz Luhrmann to Jay-Z,

Sparking Gatsby- Soundtrack CollaborationBy: Bennett Marcus/Monday, May 6th, 2013

Leonardo DiCaprio, Baz Luhrmann, and Carey Mulligan

Great Gatsbydirector Baz Luhrmann knew he wanted to include hip-hop in his script

adaptation of the 1925 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, but it wasnt until star Leonardo

DiCaprio connected him with his friend Jay-Z that the soundtrack for the film really took

    off.

We wrote hip-hop ideas into the script, Luhrmann toldVF Dailyat a screening for the

film this weekend. I was telling [Leonardo] about the hip-hop idea, and of course, when

it comes to hip-hop, there is kind of a chairman of the board. He turned around to me

and said, I think the chairmans up at the Mercer if you want to meet him. And it was

actually a very nice, natural, instant connection.

Luhrmann said he promptly visited Jay-Z at the Mercer, where he was recording.

He turned on a microphone, and Jay said, Its great to meet you. I just want to finish

something, Luhrmann explained. And he said: Lies on the lips of a priest, rolling in

the Rolls Royce Corniche, and he said, Im just going to finish that. Its called No

Church in the Wild. Viewers will recognize the rhythmic opening hook from that song

from many of the endlessly repeating Gatsbyads playing on television this month.

Luhrmann continued: He played all of this album to us, and then I explained to him

  • 7/30/2019 Gatsby Special Screening Press Pack

what I was going to do, and before Id even finished, he said, We shouldnt be talking

about it. We should be getting on and doing it. Its that important, to make the

connection between jazz and hip-hop, that this is the African American storytelling street

    music of our time.

Jay-Z became the executive music producer of the film and brought on fellow artists like

will.i.am, Andr 3000, Fergie, Lana Del Rey, Bryan Ferry, Florence + The Machine,

Gotye, Sia, Jack White, and, naturally, his wife, Beyonc. He was there. Hes a true

collaboratora serial collaborator, as he called himself, explained Luhrmann. And

    yeah, Leonardo brought us together.

Luhrmann Is Dominating The Gatsby Red CarpetBy: Max Berlinger/Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

All eyes will be on Gatsbythis week as the Hollywood reboot of the literary classicmakes its big publicity push before opening nationwide this Friday. As you alreadyknow, everyone from Brooks Brothers to Tiffany's is attaching their name to the stylishcinematic adaptation, with good reason: Jay Gatsby and co. are fashion royalty of theJazz Age.

And as part of the media blitz that's currently underway, there's no shortage of onlineanalysis of which actors are living up to the sartorial reputations of their onscreen alteregos as they walk the red carpets of the world. Us? We've been noticing a majorbehind-the-scenes player looking to trump the film's male leads: Gatsbydirector BazLuhrmann.

Hear us out. Leo, Toby, and Joel look great, no doubt about it. But we can't help butappreciate Luhrmann's artfully left-of-center approach to dressing. On the left is the

Australian director (with is wife, Catherine Martin, who is the film's production andcostume designer) at a screening of his movie last night. See what he's doing there? He's wearing a navy dinner jacket with black pants and brown shoes. Black, brown, andnavy often considered a big no-no. Plus he's ditched the socks and added a square-end tie. Not exactly traditional, but he's pulling it off in a big way. On the right he adds

some derring-do to eveningwear with a made-to-measure midnight blue tuxedo fromBrooks Brothers.

Is it right for everyone? No, of course not. But he's nailed the fit, as you can see at rightin that very well-tailored midnight blue tux. And he's tinkering with the details in a waythat is, yes, off-kilter, but finessed in just the right way. If you know anything about theman's work, you know he's quirky, highly visual, and meticulous all of which comesacross in his clothing. Of course, it probably doesn't hurt to be married to a costumedesigner.

Katy Perrys Braided Flower Crown: A Multi-Zoom AnalysisBy: Christina Han/Monday, May 6

    th, 2013

Last night, Katy Perry arrived at the preMet Ball special screening ofThe Great

Gatsbyat the MoMA wearing an Alice + Olivia floral jacket and Suno's silvery-gray croptop and matching skirt set. She accessorized the look with a cotton-candy-pink Chanelbag, delicate dangly earrings, and one major braided crown. It's been quite some timesince we've seen the usually spunkily tressed singer doing something quirky with herhair there have been plenty of glamour waves and updos of late so let's take acloser look at this woven wonder.

Unlike her last recorded braided do, which was accented with gold ribbon at thePeople's Choice Awards, this set is located closer to the front of her hairline. Thisprevents the overall look from appearing too milkmaid. It's more regal.

What really sets this apart from other braid concepts is that Perry has chosen to adornhers with a boatload of flowers. Now, if there were a few blooms stuffed into varioussections of the weave, there's a chance that it would look too delicate, too hippy-ish.Plus, this is Katy Perry, she of light-up Met dresses and gilded perfume sceptors. Sheknows no restraint.

We assume that Perry and her hairstylist decided on this look at the last minute.Otherwise, a week of neck-muscle-toning exercises wouldn't have hurt this heavy-headed look.

Now here is proof of where she probably got this whole hair-as-braid-crown-with-flower-

halo look: her pal Mia Moretti. Best friends do everything together, right?

Braids. Floral halo. Abs. Don't call her a flower child.

Outfit Of The Day: Solanges Art Deco-Inspired FrockMonday, May 6th, 2013

Solange took inspiration from The Great Gatsbys movie logo, and wore an Art Deco-style dress at last nights pre-Met Gala screening. With a plunging neckline, bold stripes,

The singer wore a cream and black striped number with red ankle-strapped wedges.Striped dresses arent exactly exciting, but the different angles of the stripes kept thislook interesting. (NEW YORK) It's Gatsbygalore this week! The film had another screening last night atthe MoMA ahead of its May 10th debut in theaters. This screening was hosted byQuintessentially Lifestyle, the luxury lifestyle concierge and all the stars were on hand tofte the flick. Plenty of big fashion names arrived to view the film including: Vera Wang,Parbal Gurung, Michael Kors,Julia Stegner, Nicole Trunfio, Anja Rubik, NanetteLepore, Brad Goreski, Olivier Theyskens,Yigal Azrouel, and to our pleasantsurprise, Valentino. No doubt this crew would be paying special attention to thecostumes designed by Miuccia Prada for costume designer and art director, CatherineMartin. "I'm very excited to be here tonight, because the film is going to be veryinspiring for fashion," said Valentino. The designer also added, "Tomorrow night will beanother evening at The Metropolitan that will be full of ideas, because maybe they aregoing to do their best and make it sensational." Only time will tell.

Meanwhile, Carey Mulligan arrived fresh-faced, despite her jam packed pressschedule, to a rather excited group of photographers screaming her name outside of thevenue as she posed for photographs. As she worked the red carpet in a black and whitePrada pantsuit, Mulligan said of working on directorBaz Luhrmann's set, "Ive neverexperienced anything like it. Its actually incredibly helpful in terms of getting intocharacter," said Mulligan. "You get drawn in and half of it is done by you walking onto aset with such epic scale and so intricately designed and he is the most energetic, warm, and wonderful person." Luhrmann explained his casting technique: "There are no extras

And if the film was any indication, those on-set parties were epic. Sign us up to be yourextras, Mr. Luhrmann! Baz Luhrmann, Carey Mulligan talk Gatsby atQuintessentially screeningBy: Shania Moskowitz/Monday, May 6th, 2013

Last night, The Peggy Siegal Company presented a private Pre-Met Ball Special

Screening of Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures' "The Great Gatsby"

hosted by Quintessentially Lifestyle. Examiner.com was on the star-studded red carpetat the MoMA. From the film: Baz Luhrmann (director, screenwriter and producer),

Catherine Martin (production designer, costume designer and producer), Carey Mulligan

and Leonardo DiCaprio were in attendance.

So many people wanted the role of Daisy, how did it feel to beat out the other

    actresses?

Carey Mulligan: I felt incredibly lucky and really surprised. I had no expectation I would

get the job. So, yeah, unbelievably shocked and really honored, especially, well, to work

with Baz and Leo, but also to get to portray such an iconic character. Its amazing.

Did you bring anything from your relationship into this character?

Carey Mulligan: No, I dont really tend to use my own life when Im working. You know,

its much more fun to sort of invent a new person.

How do you undo yourself after a big event? The hair, the makeup etc?

Carey Mulligan: I kinda start doing it as soon as I get into the car, start pulling pins out,

    pulling off eyelashes.

What was it like to step into Baz Luhrmann's world?

Carey Mulligan: Yeah, Ive never experienced anything like it. Its amazing. Its actually

incredibly helpful in terms of getting into a character. You get completely drawn in and

half of your work is done for you by walking onto a set that is of kind of an epic scale

and also so intricately designed. Also, he is the most energetic, warm, you know, wonderful person. And so, he has a crew of 150 people who just love him and want to

do everything to make him happy and the actors feel the same way. So, its really fun.

    Its like summer camp.

Can you speak about working with Leonardo DiCaprio?

Carey Mulligan: Hes an actor that Ive admired my whole life. As long as I could really

remember admiring performances. And when I started thinking about acting in a real

way when I was sort of 12, 13 years-old, thats when I first recognized, you know, howbrilliant he was. So, I am constantly amazed that Ive been able to work with him. Yeah!

    What makes a party great?

    Carey Mulligan: Baz Luhrmann!

What are you hoping audiences will take away from "The Great Gatsby"?

Baz Luhrmann: I mean, theres a big idea in the film about having a life of purpose and

a point to it, and I think thats what Nick Carraway learns. You know, after coming to

Wall Street to work in bonds, he goes back to writing, he goes back to saying, I once

met someone who everyone said was a bad guy. Turns out he did everything for a

reason and that reason was love. You know? And it made him want to have a

meaningful life. So, I think thats good. As well as that, I hope they also take away a

desire to have some rockin out great parties and wear those groovy frocks and play the

soundtrack and have a few glasses of champagne.

What do you think makes a great party?

Baz Luhrmann: People. People. The right mix of people. Then you glue it together with

music, maybe a few champagnes, and actual ly thats it. People, a few drinks, nice food,

music. Music and people is pretty much the beginning and end of it, but its about who

you bring together, thinking about who should bethe right crowd.

When you were casting the film was there really good chemistry on set?

Baz Luhrmann: Well, theres no extras in our film. Everybody who comes to work on our

film is a character. When you arrive, youre told who you aremy wife is collaboratingwith Miuccia Prada! Miuccia said, I love the way everyone is a person. I said,

Everyone is a person. And when you treat people like that, they give extra. Theyre

actually really in the moment in those party scenes. Theyre not pretending; theyre in

    the party scene.

How many times have you read the book?

Baz Luhrmann: Now, so many! I get confused between that and the early version called

Trimalchio, which Professor James West actually sent a note, hed just seen the filmlast night. Did you see the note? Its amazing. Really amazing. So, you know, enough

I wouldnt be able to recite it, but I probably dont need to read it again too soon.

What do you hope audiences will take away from the film?

Catherine Martin: The setting helps support the story, support the actors performances,

and that at the end people come out having had a complete experience that fulfills all

their senses, emotional, visual, their heart, their soul, that they feel that theyve got a

    really fantastic experience.

What was it like working with Miuccia Prada?

Catherine Martin: It was absolutely fantastic. A great friend, a great supporter, an

incredible creative mind. Very humbling, you know, into the sense that that creative

powerhouse is just an extraordinary mind.

    77/147

How did you get Miuccia Prada on board to work on the film?

Catherine Martin: Well, my husband and Miuccia have had a very long friendship and

relationship over the years and she worked with us for the very first time on Romeo +

Juliet way back when. And Ive known and spoken to Miuccia over that 20 -year period. And I was just very lucky, I guess.

"The Great Gatsby" follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest

and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering

jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick

lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay

from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It

is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions,

loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he

pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holdsa mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

"The Great Gatsby" hits theaters this Friday, May 10.

Carey Mulligans Oufit Repeat: Great Gatsby Actress Wears

    Lavin TuxedoMonday, May 6th, 2013

Is there something Carey Mulligan is trying to tell us?

The "Great Gatsby" actress wore yet another tuxedo outfit this time at a pre-Met Ballspecial screening of "The Great Gatsby" in New York City on May 5.

We first saw the gamine 27-year-old wear a similar Victoria Beckham tuxedo cape atthe Tiffany & Co Blue Book Ball in April but this look, designed by French fashion houseLanvin, takes it a step further.

Sporting Le Smoking trousers and peep-toe heels, the English "Drive" actress lookeddecidedly androgynous especially with her short blond hair slicked back into a boyishcut.

Our favourite part of Carey's outfit? The pointy, satin shoulders on the tuxedo top. Howvery '80s!

We're super excited to see Carey's "Great Gatsby" costumes. The actress, who playsDaisy Buchanan in the film told The Telegraph that she too was excited to wear theelaborate '20s styles on set.

"I was so excited because having seen all of Baz's films I knew what ["Gatsby" costume

designer] Catherine Martin did with costume and when I got to work with her I realizedwhat a personal experience it was," said Mulligan. "She really does take the actor andthe character and then marry that to the costumes in a way I've never experiencedbefore. She's amazing."

What do you think of Carey's Lanvin tuxedo?

Baz Luhrmann's big-screen adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel is already

being hailed as one of the most stylish films of 2013.

Talking style, some of the ladies in attendance let the side down; Katy Perry turned upin an odd ensemble which didn't do much for her celebrated figure. See who else was inattendance for a Big Apple celebration of the much-loved American classic.

Kylie Minogue wore a kimono-style top and tailored trousers in the Dolce and Gabbana flowered print

Imitation is supposed to be the sincerest form of flattery.

And when Kylie Minogue is doing the imitating, its a pretty big compliment.

Trouble is, shes not the only one. So many celebrities seem to have taken a fancy to

this Dolce & Gabbana print that its getting hard to work out exactly who should feelflattered

The lily of the valley design has been spotted on at least ten different stars in barelyeight months including three in the past five days.

Miss Minogue was attended a screening of The Great Gatsby in New York

Miss Minogues outfit, which she wore to the screening of the new Great Gatsby film inNew York on Sunday, was one of the edgiest to date.

The 44-year-old wore the green, white and black print as a silky kimono-style top withmatching trousers the night after attending an event where socialite Nicky Hilton, 29,was wearing the very same print.

That occasion was the opening of Dolce & Gabbanas new flagship store on the citysFifth Avenue.

So its not too much of a leap to suggest that Miss Hiltons peplum-style top may haveprompted the Australian singer to do a little shopping while she was there.

Of course, Miss Minogue may equally have been inspired by Penny Lancaster, whowore a low-cut shift dress in the floral print the day before that.

The 42-year-old was joined by husband Rod Stewart at a charity dinner in Los Angeleslast Friday.

Then theres Dame Helen Mirren, who has been spotted in her version of the outfit threetimes since December.

The 67-year-old actress most recently wore the long-sleeved dress to a Princes Trustawards ceremony in March, paired a little oddly with white tights and pearls.

Earlier that month, actress Rachel Weisz, 43, chose the print for an appearance on UStelevision show Good Morning America.

Less than a week earlier it had been seen on these shores at the Tesco mum of theyear awards, where 47-year-old TV presenter Emma Forbes paired the peplum top with

    trousers in the same print.

The month before that model Daisy Lowe, 24, had cut a rather more glamorous figure atthe Elle style awards, in a strapless 50s-style dress with a full skirt, again in thedistinctive print.

Carey Mulligan attends The Great Gatsby private screening

in New YorkMonday, May 6th, 2013

The celebration of all things Great Gatsby continued in the Big Apple on Sunday nightas director Baz Luhrmann and star Carey Mulligan hosted a private screening of the filmat Manhattan's Museum of Modern Art.

Carey Mulligan, who plays Daisy in the film of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, walked thecarpet with director Baz Luhrmann and costume designer Catherine Martin at the NewYork Museum of Modern Art on Sunday.

She says it's clear to her why people are so excited about the film: "It's just one of thosebooks. It's a book that really chimes with people and I think that's because thecharacters are so well written, it's got a really brilliant structure. It's kind of a compact, delicious book and generations of people just love it."

Baz Luhrmann, who produced, directed and co-wrote the screenplay says it wasimportant for him to make the film in his home country of Australia - where many of hisother films have been shot:

"We had to convince a studio that we could make a big part of the East Coast ofAmerica in Australia. Having said that, we have people who have worked there for

nearly 20 years and C.M. here (wife, co-producer, production and costume designerCatherine Martin) knows the fourth seamstress on the right. The depth of ourrelationship, the fact that we work so deeply together, we almost have a kind ofinvisible, creative language and you can't form that in five seconds. So that was thegreat advantage - that we were working with people that we have collaborated with overmany, many years," he said.

Catherine Martin has been working with Luhrmann since she took on the job asproduction designer for his 1996 film Romeo + Juliet - which also co-starred DiCaprio(with Claire Danes). A year later she and Luhrmann wed and she's been serving as hisCostume & Production Designer on films ever since - including The Great Gatsby.

"[Baz Luhrmann] talked about making a New York that wasn't nostalgic, that it wasn't anostalgic 1920's, that we would approach it as if this world was the most modern, thesexiest, the most visceral, the most exciting - just like it was for Zelda and F. ScottFitzgerald and just like it is for the characters in the book. It had to have an immediacyand a currency today that would make the audience connect to the themes that are inthe story and in the book," she explained.

And making Gatsby come to life meant lots of silk costumes, the beads, feathers andthe flapper style - and all those Tiffany diamonds. Mulligan says she couldn't wait to bea part of it:

did with costume and when I got to work with her I realized what a personal experienceit was. She really does take the actor and the character and then marry that to thecostumes in a way I've never experienced before. She's amazing."

Solange Knowles Cleavage On Display At The Great GatsbyPremiereBy: Julee Wilson/Monday, May 6th, 2013

There are two things we can always count on when Solange Knowles steps out on thered carpet:

    1. She'll be rocking an eye-catching ensemble in a bold print or pattern.

    2. Her afro (whether big or small) is always picked to perfection and all-around amazing.

The 26-year-old star certainly checked both those boxes on Sunday night whileattending a New York City premiere of The Great Gatsby. She stepped out in a cream-and-black stripped Jill Stuart dress and a full afro that's right on par with her celebratedsignature style. But the singer/DJ/model didn't stop there. Solange gave us one more

thing to marvel at -- her cleavage.

Although we've seen Solange show some major skin in the past, it's usually hergorgeous gams that get most of the action (see: this and that). On Sunday night, sheoffered up a double whammy by rocking the super short frock and super low-plungingneckline. The "Losing You" singer definitely ran the risk of a major wardrobemalfunction, but everything stayed in place. Phew!

Katy Perys Amazing 24-Hour Style TransformationBy: Lucy Hancock/Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Katy Perry isn't known for her straightforward style profile, but this weekend she turnedfashion on its head in just 24 hours. On Sunday, she attended the first screening of TheGreat Gatsby in New York rocking a festival look with a flower head garland, bohoearrings and an adorable matching brocade top and skirt. Katy embraced hercarefreeCoachella side at the screening, unlike pals Carey Mulligan and Gwen Stefani who werestrictly monochrome.

But then, who is this we see at the Met Gala 2013 the very next day? A new vampyKaty in this creation by Dolce & Gabbana, featuring a mosaic sequin pattern depicting

none other than the Virgin Mary. Not afraid to stand out, the singer finished off the outfitwith heavy crucifix earrings complete with an ornate gold crown because when you'refamous, it's totally cool to wear a crown to a party. The ensemble might be a millionmiles from her laid-back festival look, but we loved both of her fabulous fashion alteregos. And now we want a crown so badly.

Carey Mulligan at The Standard: The Great Gatsbys Many

    PremieresBy: Regina Weinreich/Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

A few years ago, the excesses of the new movie version of The Great Gatsby mighthave inspired cathartic revulsion. The scene outside Avery Fisher Hall for this week'sGatsby premiere befit the mega wattage of the movie's stars, particularly LeonardoDiCaprio as he made his way through a screaming crowd. Carey Mulligan, resplendentin red Lanvin, her blond hair swept up, walked the red carpet. In the grand chaos of thisopening of a state-of-the-art Baz Luhrmann movie--think Moulin Rouge set in 3D fairytale America--Baz Luhrmann failed to introduce his stars, but did manage to say in hisintroduction, as the story takes place in New York, there was no other place for its worldpremiere, even though this American epic will open the Festival de Cannes next week.

That's quite a coup, opening Cannes; it is the creation of an award season all its own, given that the enterprise was delayed in production from the December Oscarnominated film premieres. The film's May release makes you wonder, how might Gatsbyhave fared in the run up to the Oscars? And how will it do now, competing for box officewith summer titans like Iron Man and Spiderman?

At the turn of the millennium, F. Scott Fitzgerald's jazz age novel was number one onseveral "best book of the century" lists. You can understand why a director from

Australia who specializes in stylized extravaganzas would seize this property. Gatsby'sexcesses in his West Egg mansion facing the green light where his beloved Daisy liveswith her husband Tom Buchanan are rife for his sensational art design. The openingparties in 3D are a thrill, with their emptied bottles of Moet floating in the swimming pool, lit by fire works. Cars, with long hoods like snouts accessorize these characters, theirdriving skills a mirror of their souls. After an opulent display, the movie homes in on theFitzgerald tropes: Gatsby's self-invention. Nick's fascination with his aloof neighbor; asgo-between, Tobey Maguire is excellent, wide-eyed observer of Gatsby's heroic effortsto win Daisy, Daisy as amoral cipher, the courtly woman on the pedestal, andinstrument of Gatsby's demise. By the end, Luhrmann's movie wins you over, not in thelarge sense of Fitzgerald's take on the American Dream, but as a story of a doomedlove affair.

Carey Mulligan has grown up from the time we met her for An Education, although sheretains the innocence she exuded in her movie, Drive, for Nicolas Winding Refn, whocast her because, upon their meeting, he told this reporter, he instantly felt the need totake care of her. As Daisy Buchanan in Gatsby, she is a femme enfante who MUST becared for, which is why a critical scene where Gatsby and Buchanan vie for her, withGatsby saying, she does not love you, is a moment of tragic irony: we know, as he doesnot, Daisy will stay with Tom.

At yet another party at The Standard on Sunday night, cast and director held court, aprivate party within a private party. Oliver Stone, Katy Perry and Cuba Gooding Jr.

joined them. Moet flowed, old-fashioned champagne glasses clinked high above the citylights. Outside, at street level, Radioman predicted, Gatsby would be Leo's Oscar win.

Carey Mulligan: Im nothing like Daisy though I likereinventing myselfBy: Tom Teodorczuk/Tuesday, May 7, 2013

Would F Scott Fitzgerald be enamored of his latest heroine, Carey Mulligan? Theactress, who plays Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmanns new adaptation of The GreatGatsby, told the Londoner at a private screening of the film hosted by QuintessentiallyLifestyle at MOMA in Manhattan that while Fitzgeralds life inspired his art, she takes adifferent view: I dont tend to use my own life when Im working. Its much more fun toinvent a new person.

Meanwhile, Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone, who at one stage wanted to make aMargaret Thatcher movie, was reflecting on her death: Meryl Streep made her betterthan she was. Its ironic that The Economist came out with a cover condemning HugoChavez when he died and soon after had a pro-Thatcher cover after her death. But I likeBritish women.

    Just not the Iron Lady.
