Hello Year 3, I hope you are well, keeping safe and have had a lovely Easter.

Here is your RE project on the topic of Pentecost to complete over the next few weeks.

Unlike in class where we do lots of writing to explain our understanding, I have made these activities fun so that you can show

your creative side when completing each if them. Make sure to take your time and try

your very best with each activity.

Task 1LO: To explore power and energyLook at the picture of fire and imagine that it is burning near you.

Sit down and discuss:

- What can you smell?- What sounds can you hear? - What can you see? - How does the fire make you feel? - What would happen to the ground outside if it came into contact

with fire?

Pentecost project

Page 2: Gathering€¦ · Web viewHere, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread.

- Can fire be used for good or is it only used for bad?

Listen to this sound clip of wind outside

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD47Mhzm-CU

As you listen to the sound of the wind think about:

- How does the wind make you feel? - Do you like/dislike when it’s windy and why?- Do you think that wind energy can be used for good things? Can you

give an example? -

Look at the picture of the sun rising and discuss these questions with someone in your house:

- Why do you think the sun is such a powerful energy? - How does the sun help us? - Do you think the sun is a helpful energy or an unhelpful energy?

Why? - What do you think would happen if we had no sun?

Page 3: Gathering€¦ · Web viewHere, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread.

Task 2Over the last few weeks we have all been very lucky to have some nice weather whilst we have been learning from home. Although we can’t see our friends and family right now, I want you to think about how this nice weather has made you feel,

whilst you have been at home. Talk with your family: Can you each give an example of something you enjoy doing when it’s a nice sunny day? Can you think of three good things that come from the sun rising each day?Think about:

- How the sun is a light source for our world- How the sun helps food sources and animals to grow - How the sunshine can make you feel - All of the lovely outdoor activities that you can do when

the sun is shining outside.

Can you draw a picture/poster to show the impact that the energy from the sun has on our world? This could be a picture of new plants growing, you playing outside with friends and family, doing your favourite sports

activity, or even how the sun gives us light so we can see.

Task 3

We celebrate the feast of The Ascension on Thursday 21st May this year.L.O - I can describe the Ascension

Page 4: Gathering€¦ · Web viewHere, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread.

The Ascension is when Jesus joins his Father in Heaven and it takes place 40 days after Jesus’ resurrection at Easter. He appears to the disciples many times in this period.

Watch what happens in the video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH-N6Erg5XwAnd read the Gospel:After Jesus had been raised to new life, he told his friends, “You will receive the power of the Holy Spirit. You will be my witnesses here in Jerusalem and all over the world.” As he said this, he disappeared from sight. They realised that he had gone back to his Father as he had said he would.

(Based on Acts 1: 6-11)

Here, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread. We remember the power that God has and how he used this almighty power to bring Jesus to our world to love us and die for us. If we trust in the power from the Holy Spirit and spread the word of Jesus, God will save us, and we will one day be able to join Jesus in Heaven.

Think and have a chat about:- How do you think the apostles felt and wondered when Jesus

disappeared from sight? - How do you think the apostles could be witnesses all over the

world? - Why do you think the apostles needed the power and energy of the

Holy Spirit? Task 4

Re-watch the video of Jesus’ ascension back to Heaven into Gods’ arms. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH-N6Erg5Xw

Thinking about the message that Jesus shares with us at this time and using your best acting skills can you re-enact Jesus’ ascension to heaven.

Think about: - How the disciples will be feeling

Page 5: Gathering€¦ · Web viewHere, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread.

- how you could use your body language to show this- What different facial expressions might you use - What gestures could you use to show that Jesus will be ascending

into Gods’ arms?

You could ask your family members to help you and if you really wanted to, you could even dress up.

You could even video yourselves acting the ascension out and share it with members of your family and friends that you are unable to see at the

moment.

Task 5 LO: To discuss the power and energy of the Holy Spirit

After Jesus ascended into Heaven the apostles were waiting to receive the Holy Spirit because that's what Jesus told them would happen.  The Holy Spirit would help bring them closer to God. This is what we celebrate at

Pentecost, which occurs 50 days after Easter Sunday.

Read the extract from God’s story below, just after Jesus ascended into Heaven and the Holy Spirit came to the crowds in Jerusalem.

You could read it yourself or have an adult read it to you.

Page 6: Gathering€¦ · Web viewHere, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread.

After you have read this think about: - Why were the friends of Jesus hidden away when the crowds were

celebrating in Jerusalem?- How you would feel if you were a disciple? - Do you think the crowds in Jerusalem were shocked when they first

realised that language barriers had disappeared, and they could understand each other? Why?

- How did the people in Jerusalem embrace the power of the Holy Spirit?

- How does this show that the disciples were following Jesus’s word?

Now using the reading as your inspiration, imagine that you have been given the power to speak to someone in another language for the first time, just like the Holy Spirit gave the apostles the ability to speak in

different languages so people all over the world could understand their message.

What questions would you ask them? What would you like to know about their way of life? How would you feel about being touched by the Holy

Spirit? Can you create a story board to show how the Holy Spirit has touched you

and how you would approach speaking to someone from a different country, when they speak a different language, now that you are able to

fully understand them?

Page 7: Gathering€¦ · Web viewHere, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread.

You could start off your story board by meeting someone for the first time and not being able to understand them because they speak a different language. Next, just like in the reading you could show how the energy of the Holy Spirit passed through the town/village giving everyone power and breaking down barriers. Finally, you could show how now when you speak to the person again, because you have been touched by the Holy Spirit, you can both understand one another and have a conversation.

Task 6:LO: To create artwork to show my understanding of the Holy Spirit’s power. Previously you will have read the story about when the Holy Spirit came to the apostles and shared its’ power with them. Watch this video to remind yourself what happened:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqG_lvZhU-A

Q Why do you think that the coming of the Holy Spirit was likened to strong wind and tongues of

fire?Throughout time there have been many different interpretations of when the Holy Spirit came to the apostles and give

them power. Here are some of them to look at. As you look at each piece of artwork

think about:- What do many of these

pieces of artwork have in common?

- Do you notice a recurring symbol or object?

- Why do you think these symbols are often

included?

Page 8: Gathering€¦ · Web viewHere, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread.

Get creative! Using these pictures as inspiration, with any crafting materials you have available at home, can you

draw, paint, make a model or collage to represent the message of the Pentecost. Don’t forget to use the religious symbols of the flames or the dove, which are used throughout these pictures to show the arrival of the Holy Spirit.

Don’t forget to take photos of yourself holding your work up with pride to share with everyone at school!

Task 7LO: To create a liturgical dance to show my understanding of the Holy Spirit. For this task you will need to look at the hymn below. You can read it with an adult line by line and think about what each line means to you and how it makes you feel.

Page 9: Gathering€¦ · Web viewHere, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread.

You can also listen to the song on YouTube, with the lyrics so you could sing along if you wanted to.

Page 10: Gathering€¦ · Web viewHere, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread.

Think about how this hymn tells us how Jesus’ followers received the power from the Holy Spirit.

How could you show the joy that came over the people when the Holy Spirit gave them this power within your movements? Maybe they would

become bigger and stronger throughout the song, just like the power from the Holy Spirit became stronger within Jesus’ followers.

Task 8

LO: To describe how Christians use the gifts that they receive from the Holy Spirit.

On the day of Pentecost, God’s Holy Spirit brought many gifts to Jesus’s followers. These gifts were special and transformed them through different kinds of energy and power. These gifts were given to the

followers of Jesus, so that Christians could use them to help one another and live in the footsteps of their messiah. Below is the first letter from St. Paul to the people living in Corinth. It is through this letter that St. Paul

reminds the people about everyone’s different abilities and how the Holy Spirit helps each person differently.

Page 11: Gathering€¦ · Web viewHere, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread.

Have a think about the following questions: What does Paul tell us God gives to everyone? What different gifts does Paul tell us God gives to different people? Which gift/ energy do you feel that you have been given? Why? If you could choose your gift/energy from the Holy Spirit, which gift

would you like? Why?

How can Christians be open to the Spirit and use their gifts for the good of others? Why would they do this?

There are lots of different gifts that allow us to achieve our dreams and overcome our biggest struggles, however based on the Scriptures (Isaiah 11:2-3) and the Church’s teaching we understand that there are seven

gifts of the Holy Spirit.Understanding: To be compassionate and take time to find out and be able to appreciate what is happening. This is when we see things from other peoples’ point of view. - Can you think about when you have used your understanding to make

the right decision? - For example, think about a time when maybe you didn’t want to eat

your vegetables at dinner when a grown up told you to, yet you

Page 12: Gathering€¦ · Web viewHere, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread.

decided to eat the vegetables because you understand that they are good for you and help you to grow.

Right Judgement: Using wisdom and understanding to come to a good decision about something.

- Have you ever made a bad decision? What happened? - Why is right judgement important? - For example, we can all say that we are using our right judgement

at the moment, by choosing to stay safe at home, instead of seeing all of our friends and family and spreading our germs.

Wonder and Awe: This gift allows people to recognise the wonder of God and be amazed by the love and goodness that he gives each of us.

- What in our world makes you say “Wow!”? - How can you show your appreciation of Gods’ wonders? - For example, we can treat Gods’ world and the people in it, by

making sure we take care of it. We can do this by picking up litter, planting trees and spreading smiles to the people we meet.

Courage: There are times when everyone needs to be brave in standing up for what they believe to be right and holy.

- Think about when you have been brave and used your courage before?

- For example, think about in the yard if you saw someone not being very kind to someone else, what might you do to help in this situation?

Wisdom: Making the choice to choose the truth and believe in God.

- For example, if someone were to tell you that God didn’t exist, you would use the gift of wisdom to ignore them and stay strong.

Knowledge: Without knowledge, you cannot make right judgements or have a true understanding of a situation.

- Think about how you could use your knowledge to see a situation through Jesus’ eyes. For example, if you only had one sweet left and your friend asks you for one, you would ask yourself ‘What would Jesus do?’

Page 13: Gathering€¦ · Web viewHere, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread.

Reverence: Thinking about our respect for God, for each other and for yourself.

- Think about how in school assemblies and at mass in church, we are respectful of others around us and we are not silly or loud.

Today using either paper or card, I want you to create a flame, just like the one in the picture.

Think about when the Holy Spirit has visited you, which gift or power have you been given?

How as this power helped you to become a better Christian and follow in the footsteps of Jesus?

Copy out the sentence starters from the picture on the left and thinking about the questions can you finish the sentences.

You can use colour to decorate your Pentecost flame, think about the traditional red, yellow

and orange colours. You may even want to hang one of these in your window in preparation for the celebration of Pentecost. Remember to send in pictures of all of your hard work!

Task 9 L.O – To know how the Church celebrates Pentecost.

Have you ever been to church on Pentecost Sunday? This year it is on 31st May. There are a number of ways in which this day is celebrated. Can you think of any?

Think about the red clothing, called vestments that priests wear on this day. Also churches can be decorated in red or yellow like the flames of Pentecost. You may also see the dove which is a symbol of the Holy Spirit (remember when it came down at Jesus’ baptism) There is also a special prayer to call upon the Holy Spirit that you see below:

Page 14: Gathering€¦ · Web viewHere, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread.

In Rome, on Pentecost Sunday, firefighters pour red rose petals through the hole in the ceiling of the Pantheon Church. The petals remind us of the flames and represent the Holy Spirit coming down from Heaven. You can watch

it here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlBKdizKgSY

Plan your own celebration! You can practise now and then do it again on the 31st May if you wish.

Try at least one of the activities below, but you can try them all if you want to!

Ask a grown up to help you make Pentecost cupcakes

Dress in yellow or red and have a Pentecost picnic in your garden.

Create your own Pentecost themed headband to wear for the day.

Create your own flame windmill, when the wind catches it outside this can symbolise the power and

energy of the holy spirit.

You could create either flame or dove inspired bunting/mobile using string and colourful drawings or crafts in the shapes of either a flame or a dove (the symbols of Pentecost)

Page 15: Gathering€¦ · Web viewHere, Jesus shows us the power of his word. When we think about Jesus’ time on earth, we reflect on all of the good energy and positivity that he spread.

Copy out the ‘Come Holy Spirit’ prayer on card or paper and decorate it with religious symbols of Pentecost.

Liturgy TimeAs we end our Pentecost topic, now is a perfect time for quiet reflection and prayer. You have all done a fantastic job and worked really hard! Ask your family members to join in with this liturgy.

Leader: Mary and the apostles were in Jerusalem living quietlytogether. They were uncertain as to what to do but wait. There were lots of people in the city at that time because it was the Jewish feast of Pentecost, that is thanksgiving for the harvest. This is what happened next…

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles

When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place. Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong and powerful wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak. There were Jews living in Jerusalem, religious people who had come from every country in the world. When they heard this noise, a large crowd gathered. They were all excited, because all of them heard the believers talking in their own languages. In amazement and wonder they exclaimed, ‘These people who are talking like this are Galileans! How is it, then, that all of us hear them speaking in our own native languages? We are from many different countries yet all of us hear them speaking in our own languages about the great things that God has done!’Amazed and confused, they kept asking one another,‘What does this mean?’ But others made fun of the believers, saying, ‘These people are drunk!’Then Peter stood up with the other eleven apostles and in a loud voice began to speak to the crowd:‘Fellow-Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, listen to me and let me tell you what this means. These people are not drunk, they are filled with God’s Holy Spirit. Instead, this is what the prophet Joel spoke about: God says:‘I will pour out my Spirit on everyone and they will proclaim my message.’Awe and wonder came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Leader: The Good News of God’s love and power spread like sparks from a fire and warmed the people’s hearts towards God and one another. The people who were watching were astonished when they saw how much the
